I agree 100% with you on a theoretical level, the only problem is that you have to consider *why* people are being led to live the lives that they are. A capitalist system is just always going to necessitate building the majority of people up to be a standardized worker and part of an underclass. Freedom of thought and expression is encouraged, but only to a point where it's lucrative and profitable - which is why you can't just be whoever you want to be like our parents led us to believe. Why do you think teachers get paid so little to do such important work? Because their work doesn't generate direct monetary value to pay them back with. The economy isn't a perfect or even really a good arbitrator of what ideas are good or necessary for the human species, and considering how invested you are into the creative and artistic world, you can probably see that for yourself. Basically, while I do want a society completely revolving around education, ideas, and expression, I just don't know if a society based around commerce and consumerism is one that will ever foster that sort of society.

I feel like capitalism would better approach the goal that digibro suggests the closer the society is to the ideal of rugged individualism, which is greatly impeded on by mass culture and mass production, as our society is reducing the necessity of individualism, while also needing it more than ever to improve society.

K well, you didn't have to read my whole question out loud, haha... but thanks for sharing your honest thoughts! According to the 2019 Bloomberg Innovation Index, Sweden, Finland, and Switzerland all top the United States in terms of innovation (and again, that's not a Huffington Post report - it's Bloomberg). Welfare capitalism allows for a free market, but meets people's basic needs through taxation. It's the best of both worlds and speaks exactly to the quote you included about meeting people's basic needs. Thanks again! Love this idea for these question videos.

"best" or "ideal" social systems can't exist. Whenever we thought we created something resembling such a thing, it ended up backfiring in messy ways. Truth is, somebody HAS to, and WILL BE shafted, and those people will eventually get fed up with the system that shafted them. Our very nature won't allow such a thing as an "ideal system" come to fruition in real life. All we'll ever do is play ideological see-saw and loophole bingo.

Totally agree. People can come up with the greatest idea, but once it's contextualized into reality via human beings it always has the potential to be corrupted or exploited. Humans are selfish, incentivized creatures who have the capability to take at the expense of others, and remove themselves from the suffering they're causing.
@AJ-gd9tl

Human nature is possibly the worst and laziest argument for someone who has never put an ounce of thought into the thing they're babbling on about. Human nature is not fixed. @metaflux2
@metaflux2 5 жыл бұрын
@@AJ-gd9tl Human nature doesn't determine the general environment or historical processes? Dude you got to be trolling at this point, ever read a history book, or philosophy book, or psychology book, etc? It basically comes down to essentialism vs. constructivism and since it's an abstract concept the science has a long way to go in providing a definitive answer. We debate back and forth using data, history, and reason, and actually there's a really convincing argument to be made of humans having a form of natural instinct/nature that's hard to overcome. We aren't static robots incapable of change, but aren't blank slates either. A lot of behavior can be traced back to inherent/biological human drives like reproduction/pleasure, desire for wealth and material goods to exist without pain/struggle, instinct for survival, desire to belong or be accepted by a community or social group, etc... The best layman's term I heard to describe this is steering a charging elephant: we don't have complete control, but can steer it into general directions.

"If you do not on every occasion refer each of your actions to the end ordained by nature, but instead stop short at something else when considering whether to go after something or avoid it, your actions will not be in keeping with the principles you profess." "For we must not theorize scientifically about nature by means of empty maxims and arbitrary principles, but as phenomena require. For our life has no need of foolishness and idle opinion, but of an existence free from confusion." "...We must not abandon this mode of investigation, for if we dispute the evident facts, we will never be able to partake of genuine peace of mind" "Such foolishness would not befall a common creature, let alone a being possessed of perfect happiness." "Keep all these things in mind...for by so doing you will keep yourself free of superstition and be able to understand phenomena akin to these things I have told you about. Above all, devote yourself to the study of beginnings and infinitude and what is akin to them, and also of the criteria for judging and sensations, and the reasons why we reflect on these things. For these elements, when understood in their entirety, will enable you easily to comprehend the causes of particular details." "Death, therefore- the most dreadful of evils- is nothing to us, since while we exist, death is not present, and whenever death is present, we do not exist."- Epicurus This is all to say of COURSE the main goal should be for you to live a long happy healthy life, to say you want anything else is just to say "I wouldn't be happy if not doing x" probably for some nonsense reason. Even if a god existed, as explained by Epicurus, he/she would have nothing to do with us since they can just chill and be happy. Why are you worried about higher dimensions that might not even exist or be possible to get to? It's all folly. If you could take everyone and make so they're always happy no matter what that's what you should do, that should be the goal. Call it Orwellian, authoritarian, whatever but if it can be done it would be literally immoral not too. I'll end with 2 more quotes, another by Epicurus and one from video game but I got it from tv tropes "There never was such a thing as absolute justice, but only agreements made in mutual dealings among men in whatever places at various times providing against the infliction or suffering of harm."- Epicurus "Our minds are born festering with sin. Some are so blighted, they will never find redemption. The mind must be pulled up from the roots. My children are without blame, without fault - and without choice. For what is the value of will when the spirit is found wanting?" #syllabiswasright #authoritarianhistoricalprogressistheonlyprogress

Sounds a lot like libertarian socialism. No hierarchical system to take advantage of lower classes be it by government or corporation, communal ownership of land and resources, freedom to achieve whatever you desire and work for as long as its not at the expense of others.
@maxord11
@maxord11 5 жыл бұрын
Socialism kinda needs a government power; otherwise, you can't redistribute resources or police abusers of the system efficiently. The economic policy that is attached to socialism states that people inherently affect each other by being better at something and turning more profit, which breaks the system. Also, private ownership is part of a libertarian ideal, which socialism's core premise is against. I think you are thinking of either some anarcho version of mercantilism or merchant capitalism.

or known as anarcho syndicalism
@salakasto
@salakasto 5 жыл бұрын
@@maxord11 Redistribution would happen naturally as unions desire to keep all workers paid fairly. There's nothing to say you can't turn a profit in a socialist system, only that you cant keep profit for yourself if it was built on the backs of other other workers. Abolition of private property is often confusing to a lot of people. We're not against abolishing personal property, which is what you own for you and you alone, we're against private property, which is one person or entity owning something that is then used to turn a profit by other people's use. We're against landlords, we advocate for distributing resources amongst the public, we're against banks and for credit unions, etc. Even your house is considered your own personal property, we generally don't want that to be owned by a bank or government.

@maxord11
@maxord11 5 жыл бұрын
@@salakasto I'm not going to argue on the efficiency of that as that is a whole other issue, but a central mini-government in the form of a union within a business making decisions on how hard you worked would be not only a government structure that isn't in the control of the individual (as a libertarian would want), but also it will be a bunch of people affecting the lives of another with the possibility of being at his/her expense. Also, the inability to create a rental business or use a type of economical strategy is still against libertarian ideals. I'm just saying your terms are contradictory in nature. It is more like "achieve what ever you like, except all of these things because a big controlling group of us said so."

You would probably find the works of Jürgen Habermas, bleeding heart libertarianism, the journal ORDO and perhaps even left market anarchism intriguing. Basically, there is a broad strain of (actual, not counterfeit Sargonite) classical liberalism and libertarianism that appreciates the necessity of both a strong educational system in order to provide people with the tools to make their way as independent individuals in a market society while preventing anyone from falling through the cracks or being tread beneath the heel of capital through things like universal healthcare and universal basic income-basically, a more agile and unintrusive model of the welfare state with an emphasis on individual freedom and choice. Habermas and the ordoliberals are particularly chewy intellectually, so don't go into this without bringing your A-game, but, well, you're a smart dude. Also maybe check out guys like Noam Chomsky if you want an alternate take on libertarianism from a distinctly socialist angle, and from there some social anarchist stuff. It will, at the very least, intrigue you methinks.

Maybe a more humane way than "kill half the planet" which I can't really think of currently. People looking for some complex solutions while they overlook the most simple one: The ideal system is the one that worked just fine the longest (99% of human history apparently), which is tribal hunter-gatherer egalitarian societies not exceeding 150 or so specimen according to Dunbar's number. Neolithic revolution enabled capitalism (AKA slavery) and any idea developed after this turning point must be fundamentally flawed by it's very nature. Thus to achieve ideal society we need to rid ourselves of everything that came after domestication of plants and animals.
