Digimon Adventure 2020 - The Misunderstood Reboot That Surpassed it's Original

Digimon Adventure is a classic anime, but in 2020 it recieved a new reboot anime done by Toei as part of the 20th Anniversary of the franchise. And while it's had some divisive opinions on it since it aired, having gone back and watched both series back to back, I feel I'm ready to give my big hot take and say that I think 2020 is better than 1999.
And in this video I will explain my opinions, my feelings and my overall appraisal over Digimon Adventure 2020, A Superior Reboot.

something ironic about mimi being a "spoiled rich girl" is that we actually see her house in adventure 99 and she wasn't rich at all, she lived in what it seemed to be an average japanese household but with eccentric parents who probably spoiled her way too much, while in adventure 2020 the moment she is in the real world and goes to her house from what it was shown she actually seems to be rich but doesn't behave as such like her 99 counterpart did.

is all about Adventure not about how well their character development as they should do that in Adventure not cutting parts out all they did is turn a video where omnimon into the first mega level than you know learning the world they did like the digiworld changed so much and even made Lzzy look like she should used the PC not the device they was given matt only does drama because of the problem he has in the past think if his digivice turns DARK because the crest of friendship is only power as their trust grow ( think if he knows he as a mega level and turn into a omnimon that is born from recklessness and manipulation both are 180 of their crest meaning if they think is powerful meaning their crest may end up like Kari was because if gatomon was like it is in this video meaning her crest was so shown to the darkness than light that not good is over take her Digimon over as Kari

I really disagree... For one thing, I feel they did Omnimon Dirty. In the OG, he was this amazing character brought in after the entire series ended.... he was an amazing creature that updated all the lore and everything we had... 2020 brought him in way way way too soon... And I didn't like a lot of the pacing and character development.... It personally felt like a worse show, but with better animation and sorta better pacing at times...

I feel Omnimon coming in to hint at AlterS being a thing was a good showing of how much Digimon has expanded past the original Adventure since it came out and how beings like Omnimon have become, I'd argue, very common nowadays that he has alternate evolutions in the double digits now.

You're a maniac for daring to say the adv 2020 reboot is an improvement over the original series, and I applaud you for it! I still have a lot of thoughts about adv 2020, having watched it multiple times and seen the original series as a child. Takeru and Hikari received a major upgrade in story relevance, with multiple scenes showing off them having powers of their own. eg Tokomon asking for Takeru's help in reaching agumon's enraged mind. Hikari *knowing* that Taichi saved the day despite never telling her. And it extends to Patamon and Tailmon. These two holy digimon are traumatized, and need their parters help to overcome what's happened to them. Takeru's hope and optimism enables the evolution to pegasusmon, and Hikari helps Tailmon calm her anxiety about evolving. Adv 2020 gives Omegamon juicy lore as what amounts to the digital world's god, stepping in when catastrophe is immanent. The reason how Omegamon appears is set up in episode 18, when you realize there were children in tokyo who saw the chosen children fight nidhoggmon. Same for the cycle of life and rebirth being the key part of the series plot, along with how the human world affects the digital world both good and bad. I still enjoy Omegamon's speech to Negamon that it shouldn't be bound to neither good nor bad in it's next lifetime because digmon have endless potential (that can only be reached through freedom to reincarnate without it's past being held against it) What I think are one of adv 2020's biggest strengths is demonstrating repeatedly the value of the human/digimon connection. From Agumon's rage at donedevimon and crying for Taichi, patamon regaining hope because of Takeru, yamato risking his life to save gabumon because gabumon was his first friend. These moments showed again and again how much the children and digimon cared for each other. And imo formed the series key emotional moments. Heck, the alterous and sagittarius modes occur because metalgreymon and weregarurumon are inspired by taichi and yamato/takeru. (The first appearances of both modes hint not only at their standard megas but their alternates because alterous mode shoots a cannon and sagittarus is used as a blade by weregarurumon btw, also hinting at an eventual alter-s appearance) Anyway, that's most of what I want to bring up about adv 2020 at this time. It's not a perfect series considering production troubles due to the time it was created and released, but it along with digimon survive made me fall in love with digimon all over again and I love it more than I do the original show.

the 1999 adventure episodes about how they got their ultimates have always made me cry. theyre truly flawed and grew along the way with their digimons. this one...there are some good episodes, but hell there are multitudes of reasons that the original is still one of the best digi season and why the reboot failed to even be a good digimon season

Yes that's how she _started_ in the original, yes she was cringe sure but she ultimately grew as a character and learned that she should value friends over money. In 2020, the Crests and Eggs the characters earned seemed meaningless. Gatomon's corruption was one of the best parts, but she wasn't truly trapped. It’s possible they misunderstood the Crest of Light or mixed up roles like Sincerity and Hope. From 11:00 to 11:20, Gatomon acted like she had the Crest of Courage, risking herself and being treated. At 1:08, it’s revealed she gave herself up to save her friends, lighting the way for others. Though she demonstrated several Crests, Gatomon and her team hasn’t fully gained her own fully. It's uncertain whether she’ll receive the Crest of Light or Kindness. Kindness and Love: She sacrificed herself to save the ones she loves by giving herself in. Light: She used herself to lower the darkness and treat Gatomon right. Courage and Kindness: Willing to enter what was thought to be a prison, her kindness is her strength but ended up boosting the Courage than light The Crests she hasn't shown yet are Knowledge, Friendship, and Hope. is likes going to a other type of crest light because no way they would Surpassed the point ( Why was crest so required to go to the next level when we can armour up without any type of armour meaning they new evolutions forms that may ended up killing their own Digimon in return ( NO - Digiegg meaning they using themself to get armour meaning most of their stuff they did ad they likes hurting themself in return of getting armoured forms )

What i like in digimon 2020 is when they introduce about holy digimon. In 99, patamon and tailmon evolution and crest don't show too much but in 2020 we see how important they are. All the characters also show different aspects and lights same with other digimon who evolution to ultimate.

@@ChloeSunfloraVA I don't think it's terrible, I think the characters are flat and boring. Tai went from being someone who doesn't take anything seriously and gets the people he cares about into trouble into every shonen protagonist ever, and he's not even interesting by that standard. Matt went from being a kid trying really hard to pretend he's a cool headed adult who doesn't need help to basically being just that... yeahyeah I know he still needs help but he doesn't behave like a person, much less a kid. They tried SO HARD to make him cool he's completely lacking any relatability. Sora's still the one who helps others but they COMPLETELY dropped all the nuance about her doing it in an almost transactional way where she fully took on the burden of helpoing everyone without ever worrying about herself,but gets VERY uneasy whenever anyone else tries to help her. Izzy'S bashful and worried about fitting in and popularity... For some reason...É He doesn't come off as antisocial in the slightest, and doesn't really seem to have any trouble sharing his emotions and empathising with others'. Mimi tries to put on a brave face even though her main strength was to be true to herself, even when it meant saying what others don't want to hear. Joe is actively TRYING to be the leader as opposed to being pressured into it by the others, which makes him seem SO MUCH more irresponsible considering he's not right for the role. He also all around gets WAY more crap from everyone/everything else than he did in the original. Matt's never worried about TK's safety, not enough for anything interesting to happen... But again, that wouldn't be an issue if the characters they replaced the,m with were interesting, or deep, or well written, or relatable, and you're allowed to have your own opinion, but I think these were some of the blandest people I've ever seen in anything ever, whereas in the original series, its cast and their dynamics was literally what MADE the show work. Just goes to show a better budget does't necessarily mean better writing, especially if you spend it all on animation.

What character development? Seriously, the only one who even got any (because the rest were already at the end of theirs, especially Mimi) was Joe and that went by super quick right at the start of the actual story (after the bizarre way too early version of Our War Game that was tonally and narratively inconsistent with the rest of the show and broke power progression). Honestly like how I feel the Wacky Races reboot should have been called Wacky Racers, this show should have been called Digimon Action. Both reboots were good shows in their own right but were not good as reboots of the originals.

7:42 Yea clever way to nerf him so he's not as strong so he can fight more often. Which they probably got from Dominimon who they weren't allowed to use for legal reasons, though he has appeared in the DCG and vpets since then a few years later. If only there was a little more time to cook, we could have seen the dual anime debuts of both ClavisAgemon (sort of) _and_ Dominimon in the same show! Course that was also after Ghost Game (which also had the _proper_ debut of ClavisAngemon) and we haven't had a new Digimon anime series since then RIP.

4:56 Omnimon in the anime (and Cyber Sleuth apparently) is a fusion (gattai, not xros like in xros wars or yuugo like boltboutamon in Survive) not a DNA Digivolution.

@@ChloeSunfloraVA It's on Bandai's website under the Research Report Storage by Professor Agumon Digimon profile section with the article named ""DNA Digivolution", a combination of Digimon" on the list of articles even though the actual page has a different name. It's also on Omegamon's profile on the site's Digimon Encyclopedia section, as well as a few others like GraceNovamon's. It says Agumon Expert because that's the official localized name but I reject that localization on the basis that it makes him sound like he specializes in just Agumon and reversing the syntax to "Expert Agumon" sounds dumb so I'm going with the one translation of hakase I know of that makes sense here.

I don’t wanna get spoiled on 2020 after such an enthusiastic opening recommendation, but ngl I’d kinda written it off after hearing multiple people claim that it gave too much focus and development to Tai at the expense of other characters. Knowing me I’m going to take so long to watch the show even now that I’m eager to that I’ll probably just finish the video anyway, but what would you say to that specific criticism?

I'll say this, like any Digimon Adventure product it does have Tai and Yamato take center focus as the main duo of the group for obvious reasons. But I'd argue that it places focus on characters like Mimi, T.K. and Kari who didn't have such focus on them placed in the original '99 version much more and deservedly so. So I think the "Tai is the main focus and everyone gets swept aside" is kind of a generalizing statement of criticism which is blown up way too much and takes so much away from what makes this series unique compared to the original.

I drop the show half way tho , as i recall if not Taichi , the rest of cast are sidekick ,all of them yes get spotlight eps, but nothing else, Izzy family is brought up once and Joen is the sidekick leader And the Mimi part, that was the point , she is a braty girl, forget what she been tho in og, going with joen recruiting digimons and pay respect to ones who die. Here are just kids who follow the leader who have to be in every eps. This show was very, very bad. There was no structure in the plot or storylines, and the villains were bland and boring with no motivation other than just being evil. The characters never felt like a team that cared about each other. Omnimon just showing up because it's Omnimon made no sense. The Megas came in way too soon. It pretty much became the Takeru show, pushing all the other characters to the sidelines, even Yamato. When they started to care about the other characters, it was too late in the show. The character development episodes should have been in the first half of the show, and the second half should have focused more on progressing the plot, like in the original. They split up the characters for ten episodes, then brought them back together for one or two episodes before splitting them up again for another ten episodes. The final boss was uninteresting. When I think back to this show, all I see is one big mess. I'm glad they decided not to do Zero Two
