I totally disagree about the Digimon partners, at least where Marcus is concerned. I thought that his Agumon felt more like a family member than partners typically do. Since Marcus' mother is aware of Digimon from the start, they didn't have to keep her at an arm's length from the plot for too long. So Agumon was quickly welcomed into the home, and spends time with Marcus' mother and sister. Even eating with them at the dinner table and fighting with Marcus over the last scraps of food, as if he were another son. In the original cut, Agumon also refers to Marcus as "Aniki" (whether he's Agumon or Shine Greymon xD). I also like the nature of their partnership, because Agumon has a bit more agency as a character than the earliest partners did. He and Marcus are introduced to us in a fist-fight that ends in a draw. That sets them apart as equals, and lets us know that Agumon doesn't actually need to be here (a detail which sort of dovetails with the end of the series, where the Digimon all decide to go back home). They weren't destined to be partners, and there's no real obligation to stick around. But he follows Marcus anyway out of respect and admiration. There's something strangely grounded about that to me...

I definitely see why you said that. Like Agumon refering Marcus/Masaru as "Aniki/bro", Gaomon refering Thomas as Master might come as more of a working relationship then a personal one like the prev season, but that works for the premise of this show. What's more this season tries to show that these 2 beings (the human & Digimon) could never co exist, but they can and they were partners by personal means, not destined (something that tamers did). Savers would have been great (it's my 2nd fav season), but i wish the execution were bit better.

@@ay613 I think it's only shown in the Japanese Dub/English Sub it's at the end of the series where it's revealing what everyone has been up to after King Drasil's plans were ultimately stopped. With it being revealed that Marcus stays in the Digital World and alongside Agumon opens up a MMA gym in the Digital World, Thomas becomes the head of DATS Japan, Yoshi becomes an advocate of peace between humans and Digimon, and Keenan continues his steady re-entry into human society by enrolling in the school Kristy goes to.

And I think that was more the tone they were going for in Savers, so using "brother" in English wouldn't have matched the intent as well, despite being a more literal translation.

Siobhan Noble tbh Masaru isn't that really OP in the series. All what he did were only "first blood" punch or "finishing" punch, never really fight at the whole time, except probably if it's child or adult digimon

There's a very big thing that makes it stand out. Having a human character that actually gets their hand's dirty in the fights. Just the guts to fight almost anything with their own body. That stuff won me over big time in Monster Rancher/Monster Farm! Who wants to get drop kicked by a person wearing inline skates? Not a single monster. You just don't see anything like it in shows like this often. They either have to fuse, give an order to their monster companion, spring a trap, or use something that would _kinda_ get an okay from Peta or something. Honestly its the best part of this season that kind of transcends this from being your averaged animation aimed at children and the new character art direction helps a bunch too. Its just about doing what you can in general- and the main character gets his fair share of beat downs as well. In a nutshell, its really, Digimon: *_"Catch these hands"_* And that blows my _mind._ When is some dude gonna drop kick a pokemon outside of Smash?

Dude, did you miss an episode? Marcus totally got his ass handed to him during his obligatory epiphany moment when he decided to ditch Agumon to try and prove his worth. No amount of punching flaming sabretooth lions in the face could get him anywhere, and, IIRC, we saw him, clothes in tatters, beaten to the point of being unable to move and lying on a train track basically awaiting death by the time that Agumon found him. The relationship between Marcus and Agumon may not have been the best due to Agumon's weird subservience but that moment really sold me on Marcus' determination and seeing both of them fight individually did the same for the show's whole teamwork = power element. Plus, that fight also changed Marcus' perspective and turned him into a team player. It was, in my opinion, rather more of an effective character turning point than the standard going home episodes that came before it. Then we also had Marcus' relationship with his sister's digimon, the digital world itself being the enemy and everything being resolved without just digivolving as much as possible. All unique and excellent elements to Data Squad/Savers. You argued previously for Frontier being shallow, and I'm somewhat inclined to agree, but Savers was a cheese-filled fun fest from start to finish and I refuse to be swayed. It was the last of the good Digimon seasons.

Data Squad will always have a place in my heart. While recovering from surgery when I was 8, the tiny little TVs in the hospital rooms only had one channel that I was interested in - Jettix. And it pretty much exclusively showed Data Squad while I was there.

I loved data squad, Kurata to me is the best villain in the whole franchise, why? because he proved why humans are the real monsters not to mention i just wanted to strangle that bastard and beat the shit out of him. Marcus was a total badass, how many humans could take down a Digimon with a single punch? him wearing goggles would not have suited his personality. This series got incredibly dark and disturbing midway.

Man I saw the Spanish version and Kurata’s voice actor is a piece of trash! He’s so evil yet what a damn coward!! My only genuine flaws in this show are Yoshi's lack of character development and not exploring the Thomas \Gaomon relationship more. Apart from that it's perfect. Amazing pacing, amazing action, amazing plot, amazing villian, amazing ost in both versions. Generally it's just epic.

I think the Japanese version does a better job with agumon and marcus. They treat marcus like a yakuza and Agumon looking up to him as such calling him aniki which is a respectful way to refer to him a big brother.

You think one character treating another character like a crime boss makes their relationship better? They may use the term 'aniki' in the Yakuza, and it may mean big brother, but I doubt the people who use the term respect their 'aniki' more than they do fear them. At least with the term 'boss' you get a feeling of respect that doesn't have such a negative connotation.

I'm aware Agumon doesn't fear him but trying to translate a term from Japanese gang culture used to describe a character just doesn't work over here in America, and the context would create problems in a literal American translation. Admit it, if Agumon called him "Big Bro" in the dub, you'd all be complaining that it doesn't capture the work-like mentality of their relationship. 'Aniki' means two things that can't be accurately translated with one word, so no matter how they translated it, none of you would be happy.

Because the punches were his plot armor, and it defeated the purpose of having partner Digimon if he could just solve problems by punching everyone and everything. Even Craniamon's shield (which supposedly was very sturdy) cracked because of his punches. Not to mention his character barely had any development; he stick to his rash, punch everything shtick without using any brainpower to think throughout the season, and the plot bends backward so that his punches would solve any problem he faced. The worst offender was the last episode where everyone would have to separate from their Digimon and moved on with their lives, Masaru/Marcus insisted on going to DW (even with high risk of never being able to return to real world) as if it was something worthy to pursue to "play heroes" in DW. The most dumb thing is the parents were okay with their son possibly never coming back instead of living as a complete family again (while the second half of the season pretty much dealt with Masaru's father having never come back from DW).

I never despised anyone more in the Digimon franchise than Akihiro Kurata. Biggest coward, hypocrite and mass murderer in the series.After all this genocide, manipulating everyone around him, creating his abominations that erased so many Digimons, unnatural human-digimon hybrids and his final act with Belphemon under his control he didn't even get a satisfying death. Final arc of Data Squad didn't look so great by comparasing. Also can anyone remind me why King Drasil didn't take care of Kurata earlier? I forgot that, because I watched this show so long ago.

You forgot to mention that the scientist made his own digimon from stolen data of other digimon and he made a weapon capable of killing digimon permanently. Digimon are living data so when a digimon normally dies it comes back. Data squad was the only series to make a way to permanently delete a digimon.

Great characters and story, the last TV series with normal Digivolutions, plenty of cool Digimon throughout, and the most badass main character of any Digimon season. Why don't you watch Savers? The original content doesn't differ that much in terms of censorship (because compared to other Japanese series I think they didn't censor that much but I rarely watch dubbed material so I might be wrong) but the dialogue makes much more sense (since it doesn't have to be censored/adapted) and the best part: No citramon! (I don't mind Nanimon or BomberNanimon but for some reason I think Citramon is really ugly and out of place).

Howitzer are you serious? They ruined the mood in so many points of the show. Especially Sleipmon VS Dukemon. In the Japanese version the music was dramatic and emotional and the acting was as well. In the English version they added music that was not fitting for the scene, and the actors really could not capture the emotion and drama of the scene. It really ruined it. I actually have the Japanese version of that scene up on my channel if you want to compare. But I can't find the English version. Plus I think I might get a copyright strike if I tried. I surprise I didn't already. The one I have up is one of my highest rated videos in the Japanese version the music was dramatic and emotional and the acting was as well. In the English version they added upbeat music that was not fitting for the scene, and the actors really could not capture the emotion and drama of the scene. It really ruined it. Loved the video but kinda disappointed you didn't mention how DS was the 2nd series where everyone got their maximum evolution line, the ludicrous but somehow awesome idea that Marcus is such a meathead that his first thought when seeing a giant tiger man is to punch him in his jaw, or how this was the only series besides X Evo that straight up introduces the Royal Knights and their "duty". The soulless part is understandable but the Japanese OST was pretty awesome (of course this is Wada Kouji) and at the end of the day you kinda said it yourself this was a weird return to form after Frontier. Even though some stuff didn't hit all the right points I say Data Squad overall was one of the more funner and cooler series. We got some of the coolest Digimon in this season (BanchoLeomon is the best). Unfortunately I doubt the dub really expresses how the whole "Boss" relationship works, in JP its sort of like a Yakuza-gang style relationship, where they follow the Boss and treat each other like family. Anyways this is way too long, but I really hope you decide to watch Xros Wars opposed to Fusion for your next one.

I understand what you're saying about borrowing concepts from Adventure, but Frontier's power gap between its leader/lone-wolf and everyone else was atrocious. At least the remaining characters and their Digimon could still fight or at the very least provide support in the other seasons. Also, sure Susanoomon's second appearance used everybody, but that was after everyone saw just Takuya and Koji form him. It seemed more like a last-minute decision where the writers themselves realized everyone else had gotten very little action for almost the entire latter half of the season.

Yeah DataSquad was possibly the best at powerbalance for all the Digimon series. You see the main trio get their Ultimates in episodes 13,15, & 17. Keenan gets his halfway through, & even the PawnChessmon girls get Ultimates for the battle with Belphamon. Even Keenan's Ravemon gets Burst Mode alongside the Trio, while it was revealed that Kudamon was always capable of becoming Mega. As far as I see it DataSquad>Tamers>Adventure>Adventure 2>Frontier in terms of powerbalance. Adventure had everyone reach Ultimate without fusing together with Tai & Matt getting their partners to Mega Level. Considering there were 8 children it's understandable that only 2 of them got Megas. Adventure 2 ironically had both Kari & TK get Megas exclusively in the movie, while the anime had them fuse to become weaker. Tamers had The Trio & Cyberdramon reach mega through Biomerging & even Impmon got a mega, then there's MarineAngemon. Unfortunately Guardromon never even got to return to being Andromon, however Lopmon returned to Antylamon. As for Frontier, we all know where it went wrong.

Data Squad if anything is average, but it's somehow ridiculously entertaining. Marcus is a annoying hotshot, but, as much the 'punching digital monsters with above-human power' sounds idiot, it's fun and makes the 'goggle head' more prominient. It has great action scenes and I remember that BanchoLeomon was just badass. I'm also really fond of the Brazilian theme songs and Gaomon, which is in my opinion the best character in the season.

"Savers/Data Squad" was a mostly solid season in my book. While it may have been a little slow at first and some characters like Yoshi didn't have interesting development, it still had some cool action, a good second act with Kurata, and some likable characters (my favorites being Thomas/Touma, Kristy/Chika and Captain Sampson/Satsuma). Plus, I remember being glad that this season brought back the partner method after "Frontier" disposed of it. Hopefully, things will get better for you with "Xros Wars/Fusion." At least until "Young Hunters," the anime's TRUE worst season (okay, it's technically another arc in "Xros Wars," but either way it's awful).

I felt the beginning was by far the best part of it. I think parts though were rushed especially their fight against Korata in the digital world. I really love the first 11 episodes. The episodes of the Manju maker, the boxer and the pop singer are among the strongest episodes Digimon has ever made. I don't know which I like more, the manju episodes has the strongest feels, the boxer has a great moral and the pop singer really feels human. I do really like Marcus. He really believes in what he does and never gives up.

My best friend and I watched Digimon Data Squad, then Savers over the past summer. Since we were also watching videos about the atomic bombs and how they affected Japan, we watched Savers under the lens of "is this what it was like for Japan before and after the atomic bombs?" 3:53 I don't think a main character needs to have goggles to be a good character, but A; you have bias due to nostalgia and B; I have bias due to data squad being the only digimon series I've seen the entirety of, fusion had a short run here in Australia and in my opinion it was OK but that is mainly because I only have the digimon adventure movie and data squad to compare it too Also I have watched adventure tri and I liked it, I think the main reason I prefer tri and data squad is because they are a bit more mature than fusion and the digimon movie. Goggles have always been a mainstay for Digimon protagonists. Always. Be it Adventure, 02, Tamers, Frontier, Fusion/Xros Wars and even almost all of the games. Marcus never having any just feels wrong. Also, honestly, regular Adventure an Tamers in big parts feel a lot more mature than Tri and Data Squad. Sure, the characters aren't as old and the plot may not be as surface-level "mature" or "edgy", but the themes covered and the way they are approached are much more relatable and realistic.

Data squad or Savers is one of my favorite season. Cheesy? Yes, but that what made it unique from the other season. It brings something new to the connection between Digimon and the tamers. The story itself also pretty good and the characters personality are believable.

I think Data Squad is valid as heck, but that's because I love Digimon, I never got why Data Squad tried the edgier art style and older characters (marcus and thomas are 14 anyways, and future Digimon series made older protagonists without changing the art style or really changing how the characters are structured at all) because I don't feel like Digimon is physically capable of appealing to people who don't want to watch a "kid's show". It's funny tho, because all these years later and they're still just trying to ride off the coattails of Adventure with Tri and the new recent project that was announced. And yet, the most acclaimed seasons besides Adventure (Tamers mainly, but Appmon's got a good following out of anyone who didn't shun Frontier solely for its concept) are the ones that try to stay clear of Adventure as much as possible. Unless you count Fusion, but its third season/sequel (we still dont know which one it is) definitely doesn't avoid Adventure. Hoo man am I worried about you if you try to watch Fusion though. I don't think you're gonna be able to stay awake. It's not bad, it's just Data Squad but more underwhelming and more soulless. Deadass I get the names of the two Edgy Blonde Kids from each series mixed up.

I actually quite agree that Savers focus more on its "shounen-ish" tension, especially when it goes into fighting. It's never bored to watch bcos the tension is usually pumped up. But I admit that the main concept of digimon is quite convoluted. They didn't show digimon as a digital creature made by human or creatures that are parallel to human. But I like the fact that the digimon in Savers had more personality rather than Adventure's alter ego. I mean, you can often see clashes between Masaru and Agumon. It's the relationship we never really see on previous digimon series, mainly on center protagonist. The fact that Agumon was kind of babyborn stupid is usually funny to watch. One of gripe on Savers is probably the weak presence of girl protagonist. I know Yoshino is the oldest, but her background was quite shallow and she never really developed. It's as if she's not as important as other character, though she has digimon which evolved equally to other protagonists. But what I appreciated the most is that Kurata is a sly villain, he's very clever, but he's honest. At least we knew why he went evil, so it's not the superficial level of Adventure villain which are just "pure evil" without understandable reason. The moment when we saw Kurata got his ass kicked is very very satisfying as fuck, especially with Believer played. I would take Savers as my 2nd favorite season, on par with adventure, though they had their own plus and minus. But I will never say Savers is worse than 02 or Frontier, coz IMO they're worse. Also, note, Masaru isn't that really OP in the series, surely he faced many ups and downs. I'm afraid you didn't look at it deeper

With regard to how the Digimon call their partners, Agumon originally referred to Masaru as "aniki" in the Japanese version, which means something to the effect of "big bro", and is literally a informal way to call your actual brother. But this also played off the context that gang members in Japan also often refer to seniors as "aniki". This is why the closest direct english translation was "boss". "Aniki", however, reflects what was supposed to be the progression of their relationship as beginning from seniority and authority towards a more brotherly bond, so that's pretty much lost in translation. With Gaomon, the original Japanese had him refer to Touma as "Master" (yes, in english but with the accompanying engrished pronunciation), meant to reflect Touma's aristocratic background. This is more straightforward in how Gaomon serves as the loyal servant that always maintains a dignified respectful distance from his master, but that the two nevertheless grow close despite the formalities. It's debatable in either case whether the intention played out well to depict the relational development, but that at least is the actual context behind why the Digimon referred to their partners that way.

I just didn't like the ending. It wasn't bad but I feel like it could have been better. All the characters imo are spot on. One thing that weirds me out tho is how massive the digimon are. ALSO Yoshino is 4 years older than Thomas and Marcus... thats a little weird to think about.

"I got it memorized" says it all about how good are the voice actors. About the size, it was weird and sometimes inconsistent. I don't understand how Rosemon goes from barley taller than Yoshino to huge Dugimon upon Burst mode.

Takato would probably be staring starry-eyed at Marcus because do remember, Digimon in his world started out as a video game, a TCG, and a cartoon series, so it'd be like one of the shows just took steroids. Funnily enough 02 was the season with the most physical contact, yet none of that was towards digimon (in a non comedic way). So besides Daisuke/Davis reacting that way I could picute some characters from the first 2 series' cast just staring at the situation like: "All this time we could have just punched a digimon instead of bitch slapping and punching each other..."

I would expect Devimon to cower to Myotismon in response, seeing as he wasn't dealing with weak children. Tai, Matt, & maybe Izzy would have taken note of his strength, partly in disbelief. Mimi probably would have tried flirting so that Marcus would be her bodyguard. Yamaki would have probably tried to recruit Marcus much like the Data Squad. Takato & Henry would have noted how reckless Marcus was.

Saviors felt like it was trying to be the gurren lagann of Digimon, and honestly it kind of works... I mean it wasn't as good as gurren lagann or season 1 or 3, but it was still a blast to watch. Also Kurata is easily my favorite Digimon villain. And Xwars was the worst season.

As much as I can see your points on the matter, I must defend Data Squad. As I love this show's meathead protag, but even more so I really enjoyed the Main Human Villain this series: Dr. Akihiro Kurata. While he certainly isn't the first Human character that held an antagonistic outlook on Digimon (Yamaki from Tamers). Kurata's planning, manipulation, and malice towards Digimon basically blows Yamaki's hatred towards Digimon right out of the part as he goes above and beyond to commit Mass Genocide! He's a Villain that used the Data Squad Organization against their MVP members! Erased the Main Heroes Memories, Destroyed and Collected Data from various Digimon! Forced Thomas to fight against his teammates! And ended up causing a Chain of events that nearly wiped out both Earth and the Digital World (even after he dies)! He was a Villain I loved to hate and it's clear he was what made Data Squad an interesting departure as he even help agument 3 Human characters to change and Digivolve into Various monsters! The show may not have been ground-breaking, but when it came to have a central Villain, well Kurata was probably one of the best. Though it's obvious the D-Reaper still tops that list.

You know when you think about the lore of Digimon Marcus has pulled off some of the most badass feats of strength, one primary example of this is destroying Craniamon's shield which is made of black digizoid specifically made from King Drasil's data just like his armor, which is supposed to make it indestructible, then there's the fact that he stopped Craniamon's sword (a sword that he uses to cut space itself) with his fist as well. So Marcus is like the single most badass human in Digimon.

Digimon Savers wasn't that bad. Marcus was not a good leader because it was Tomas who got them out of Jams. Yoshi kept it leveled by providing support. I thought the idea of a Human Antagonist was pretty good and he was a Madman almost destroying the two worlds. Introduction of the Royal Knights was mind boggling when you saw Dukemon, Magnamon, and it's leader Omegamon fighting the DATS Team. I really liked the evolution lines of the Digimon. Ravemon & ShineGreymon were epic. It was good to see Digimon come back, but I think they could have still done better.

I felt like the heroes were seriously underpowered. Them getting their asses handed got quite old and their new stages seem to lose their relevance very quickly. What was powerful in one episode was totally outdated the next. Also their previous forms were entirely thrown out while in Tamers they still popped up and had relevance.

I just started watching Data Squad (well, I guess Savers technically since I always watch Digimon subbed) a couple days ago and so far it's really good. I like the more episodic approach in the first few episodes; the character dynamics are fun. Update: I've finished it and I think it's better than what most people give it credit for. Masaru/Marcus gets some delightful badass moments towards the end and he ended up as one of my favorite Digimon protags by the end. I would genuinely recommend this series to people who like shounen since it's honestly pretty decent as a shounen anime
