@@raytaku_ 1. Dude the is a movie that is set after the end of the series. 2. I cant do it since i was a kid i have and always hate Impmon for killing Leomon. 3. Rio does have character development, Its called being perfect. That being said Rio is the character i would imagine my self as when watching shows like that as a kid. Some strange side character that would have same simultaneous adventure that pops in and out to save the day and be slightly better than the heros. I watch yugioh i am a duelest that never escapes mention and somehow always loses to Yugi, I watch pokemon i am a mysterious trainer that only pops up when a legendary pokemon appears with my Arcanine, I watch bayblade I am Kai essentially. Rio is the perfect self insert character 🤣🤣🤣

I have always loved Tamers because of the realistic setting and the small cast of Tamers who each got a solid characterization and development throughout the story. But by the time Beelzemon was introduced, it became top tier and the very dark theme translated so well to me when I was 9 and still does 20 years later. It's a masterpiece.

Fun fact: Guilmon symbol is known as Digital Hazard. Only certain Digimon in the entire series has it, and it means they has the potential to be highly destructive. When corrupted they can threaten to annihilate the existence of both human and digital world. This is why Takato's decisions during the course of the series are important.

Is the fact that Guilmon was created by Takato's imagination the potential reason why he ended up getting a Digital Hazard? To my knowledge, there hasn't been any other season or entry in the franchise that has included a digi-destined/tamer making their own digimon. I guess Takato was in the right time at the right place to make it happen, or he's somehow got something going on with him that makes him unique from the rest.

Which definitely explains a lot. The Guil in Guilmon is derived from the word Guilty and he’s also a Virus type digimon, which is usually reserved towards evil digimon, strong against Data types (like Renamon) and weak to Vaccine types (like Terriermon). Guilmon is definitely a good boy but he does represent a legitimate threat which I think is a good move.

oh yeah, he has the potential to evolve into a digimon that erases all live by simply existing. Which probably is a goof foil for d-reaper. Also how he willed with his imagination it into existence. And i guess plays into intentions and responsibility of creation and danger that the bureau, also is a foil for i guess or parallel. Rika's problem with her mother go beyond the age gap, but also the lack of disinterest from her mother, her mother being a supermodel and constantly trying to enforce her hobbies onto her daughter, making her dress girly and photoshoot, treating her more like a doll or an extension to herself rather than her own person, despite her mother's love is obvious Rika constantly separates because of this , her mother at the beginning of the series is too dense to comprehend the damage she's causing And as an extra thing, it seems the mother has always been dodging the topic of Rika's father, so not only she pulled her away from her dad but now wants Rika to be like her, accidentally ignoring her needs. While the grandmother knows this and constantly vouches for Rika whenever she goes off on her own but also trying to be too accepting makes Rika feel like she doesn't really have anyone in the family that wants her around. Renamon is a strong digimon but from the beginning when they met she interfered and forced herself to be Rika's partner because she knew Rika didn't need a strong digimon but a friend, but she would stick around for Rika and play the part of the power-hungry digimon for the first part, knowing that just by sticking by Rika would start seeing her as less of a tool/game but as the friend she's been needing for so long. Rika is a tough front but deep down it shows that despite her tomboyish appearance she's scared (when Galgomon appears or IceDevimon) and also isn't afraid of getting in touch with her feminine side (as shown whenever she privately interacts with Culumon) but never gets the chance too because she's afraid that those traits will define her when she wants to be the opposite of her mother

I just realized that Jeri may have foreshadowed her role in the story when Takato asked her about a friend who grew too big and she assumed it was about a girl he liked growing too tall and wanting her to go back to the way things were before and then telling him to go find another girl, potentially implying herself(19:17). Then in a similar order, Takato confessed his feelings to her doppelganger, wishing Jeri would return to her old happier self, then her doppelganger kept growing bigger and bigger and then Takato searched for the real Jeri. Some of the visuals even match up, Jeri assumed Takato's friend had the silhouette of a fully mature woman, and when the doppelganger revealed herself, she makes herself look like a fully matured Jeri.

I really loved this series. Jerry and Leomon were so tragic and the ending really tugs at your heartstrings because of the smaller cast you really get a close connection to all of them. Every character and mon fleshed out.

Out of the main 3, absolutely. Jeri and Susie were more of a motivation for Takato and Henry, much like TK and Kari were for their brothers in Adventure. Granted, Jeri is the only one outside of the main three to give any development, while Digimon as a whole has trouble writing female characters. Kazu and Kenya were underutilized even B team Mimi and Joe were given better screen time. As for the mons, Impmon is definitely one of the best characters in the franchise.

I think out of all the Digimon shows, Tamers probably had some of the best lore. Not to mention how this lore works with the concept that my friends and I discussed, in how the Digital World is similar to Persona, being that it's like a cognitive world of the collective unconsciousness. Hence why Guilmon can be created by Takato using the drawings he made because his imagination and wish for a Digimon. This was reflected by the other tamers. Not to mention how the blue cards are materialized by simply wishing for them. Even a fake one that was made by someone else, can still function as a real one simply because it is believed to be the real thing. Traversing the Digital World also involves wishing to reach a certain destination or person. And finally, Biomerging is the wish to fight alongside your partner.

It’s so interesting you say that about Digimon being similar to Persona. I’m replaying Cyber Sleuth and I was thinking the way it plays and the general feel of it, is very reminiscent of Persona. It’s awesome cos Persona 5 Royal is one of my all time favourite game 🎮

@@0axis771 If I remember correctly please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that in this series the digital world is quite literally created by the internet itself. The reason why the Tamers and by extension the whole real world are so well connected is because of the wide spread use of the internet and how they/we use it. Thus story's and fictional things are made real in the digital world because of how much they are used and talked about in the real world. All of that information is often recorded and by extension uploaded the internet and that communication between the real and digital world is how the internet and digimon evolved from simple programs to hyper complex beings of power and strength. The reasons why the digital world mirrors the real world so often is because of how we communicate in todays age. Communication is such a key element of the past 50 years that it pretty much took on a life of is own weather the people like it or not which is why and how many pieces of history, spirits, cybernetics,and scfi well Story's in general all shape the digital world and by extension the digimon. That need for communication and to be understood is how we get Partner digimon for each Tamer and even the teams themselves.

Fun fact, 1st 2 seasons are an awful adaptation of the Digimon Source Material, Tamers is by far the most faithfull to it, which is why the lore is unique and has strong bases.

This was the first Digimon season that felt really solid. Not that the first two weren`t fun in their own right but this one didn`t have weird things like the crests that would just fix problems with powers that weren`t established or have plotlines that just get dropped. You could tell a lot of care went into this seasons story and it really shines for it.

my favourite thing is how they utilize the cards in the series. instead of just sitting around and being in risk of being targetted the tamers can do something to help their digimon in battle other than giving them commands, what i hope was the digimon cards could summon temporary digimon clones, like bot players, to assist instead of just used for attacks

In the story Calumon is the embodiment of Digivolution but from the observation in the show, there are still a few avenues of Digivolution available: 1. Absobing data from other Digimon, which normally puts them in the evil Digivolution paths, which is showcased by the wild and ready to fight digimon the team find IRL in most episodes; 2. Partner/Tamer Digivolution, where a Tamer evolves their partner through their bond. 3. Biomerge with Tamer. In Tamers it seems that way 1 prevents way 2 unless the Digimon have fully digested/integrated data from other digimon... in essence their data must be in a stable state to Partner Digivolve. This is key because unlike the other Digimon shows this one primarily involves absorbing other Digimon's data, in fact, I cannot remember any other Digimon show where the partners absorb other Digimon 's data after defeating them. This is what I believe caused Renamon to not be able to Digivolve, as Impmon later showcases the instability of his data from the instability of his mind and actions later in the show, the Partner Digimon are stable in their data and always in full control of themselves after they stopped absorbing data often if at all.

So to briefly go over some of the significant story/scene changes from the original to the dub: All the references to previous anime series are solely a creation of the dub. The Japanese version only establishes the existence of the card game as well as video games. Leomon's last words in the Japanese version are "So this was my destiny?" which carries great significance to Jeri later on as she always references destiny in order to internalize her grief. The scene in episode 51 where Lee pleads with Henry goes down a lot different in the Japanese version. There he asks for forgiveness; with Henry's nod to him implying that he already forgives him versus the dub where it's implied he would never forgive him.

The references to previous seasons eventually ascended its way into canon, thanks to the Hunters season finale. Takato said something along the line of "It's amazing to see those two standing together", pointing to Taichi and Daisuke who appeared in the episode as well as Masaru and Takuya. Imagine you're a fanboy and one day two of your favorite characters appear right before your eyes. That was Takato 😂

@@Antyla Yes, but it’s hard to say if it’s actually the same Takato from Tamers since Digimon is set in an infinite multiverse and it could be an infinite number of Takatos. Another discrepancy in Hunters is that Gallantmon still needs Grani in order become Crimson Mode while in Runaway Express Gallantmon could become Crimson Mode by himself (though it should be noted that Runaway Express is considered non-canon).

We know there's at least 3 timelines following the end of the anime series: the Locomon one where the Digimon returned, Message in the Packet where they never did, and the very much controversial cancel culture one. Hunters Takato most likely follows the Locomon timeline (or another one close to it) as it doesn't come with the depressing baggage that was Message in the Packet... but then Hunters ended with the kids getting separated from their Digimon too which threw me off for a loop. Unless the Tamers' tearful reunion was happening offscreen, the Message in the Packet timeline is a no go.

However Tamers is definetly the best season with some damn good storytelling and charachter development. As a little kid, while I watched and liked the first two digimon series, Digimon Tamers struck to the core of my heart. I really loved the setting, the cast, the characters, and even the digimon themselves. I think because the cast was smaller and the digimon actually talked more like characters themselves. I watched the English Dub on JETIX at the time, not knowing it was a Japanese anime production nor it had a Japanese dub. So, I was able to enjoy the American version of it really nicely. This series will always have a special place in my heart.

Finally a Digituber not just praising the OG Duology or Ghost game. Tamers is by far the best digimon has ever been. It had a sense of mystery and darkness to it that is never gonna be able to be replicated in digimon agian. Truly a kids show that handled adult targets very well. Regarding the "milk shake" and Orochi-mon. It´s sake, since it is based on the legend of the Battle between Orochi and the storm god Sunanoo. He also used strategy to get the great serpent drunk, to weaken him before the battle itself. Also visible with the brewing-implements and the Sakazuki ( the red sake bowl which Jeri pours the Sake in with the laddle ) . Since the kids are japanese, some of them may have even known that legend . )

Even though Tamers wasn't THE first show I grew up with, it was the first I was emotionally invested on. I had just entered a dinosaur love phase after watching an animated film with them, so seeing Guilmon and how Takato bonded with him was my everything. Guilmon was the bestest boy I'd ever seen, and as someone who really didn't have friends growing up I wanted Guilmon to be real, to be my best friend. And boy did the story hit me hard on that point. And as I live in Mexico, I had the privilige to fall in love with the Latino opening of the anime, just amazing.

Honestly, one of my favorite concepts in digimon came out of tamers: biomerge digivolution. It felt like a natural progression for digivolving. Digimon rely on human partners for power, meaning that the closer and more honest the two partners were with each other, the stronger the digimon got. This eventually came to full flower with the tamer merging with their digimon, providing the ultimate power boost needed to reach mega. It also allowed the tamers to fully join battles. I really wish they would bring this digivolution back, especially since they keep making battle design choices that would make more sense with biomerge. Why have the 2020 reboot digidestined ride into high level battles on their digimons’ shoulders when biomerge would allow them to join in without being a liability? Why, in ghost game, have the kids seemingly join in on their partners’ highest level evolutions, only to “jump out” at the last second? Why even have that be part of the sequence if you don’t use it? They also had a fairly good path into biomerge with the “synching” between digimon and partner. Sorry for the rant, it’s just that the writers for some reason keep dropping little “references” to biomerge without actually bringing it back. Especially since many fans I’ve heard talk about the series also like the biomerge mechanic, so why not bring it back?

I think the biomerge digivolution is the perfect balance, between having the Tamers involved in the fights, without sidelining the Digimon partners. Hopefully we get another series or even a sequel to Tamers that brings back biomerge digivolution

Impmon has such a fascinating redemption arc. He does something reprehensible (murdering a Digimon in front of their child partner), comes to regret his actions, and when he decides to become good...the heroes reject him. The idea that you can't be easily forgiven for your actions, that those past crimes have lasting effects on others (Jeri's mental state), and that his "one good deed" of saving Jeri ultimately ends in failure was powerful to me as a kid. Especially since he never expected to be forgiven but still continued to try and be a better person.

Impmon is such an excellently written character, one of my absolute favorite Digimon too. His redemption arc was done so well, the little guy was willing to out it all on the line to protect Jeri even though in his mind there was never any hope that he would be forgiven 🥹

Impmon trying to save Jeri is not a complete failure. 1:48:28, when beelzemon is breaking the barrior, is the clear transition of Jeri breaking free of her trance state. The show further empathized this by the disappearing of the dark shade of her eyes after this event, even thought she didn't fully escape right then. This just shows how naunced and careful thinking the show is. Like you said, the show talks about "the idea that you can't be easily forgiven for your actions" and good/redemptional deed sometimes ends in failure. It also shows that good deeds, even in failure, often have remnant effect that pushes the world to the right direction, and we should strive to do the right thing even if the benefit is not immediate.

Something I just noticed, but at 13:10, one of the shadowed Digimon that appears to proposition to be Rikka's partner looks to be apocalymon. So means that Renamon beat out a mega and potentially ultimate level Digimon. But I mean not choosing the closest Digimon equivalent to satan as your partner is fair, but never mind that because that also implies that Rikka is so good at the game that digi-satan wants to be on her side. Let that sink in.

Tamers fans eating good! I would love if they remade Tamers and rewrote some stuff slightly. Introducing Ryo earlier (like maybe in the first ep, at a card tournament, so we get a soft intro to Rika getting second place, to Ryo. Maybe Takato tries and loses or he and Henry be in the crowd, separately of course. And Alice with Dobermon should have had a couple of B plot scenes in the background throughout a chunk of episodes, nailing it in that she's important and doing some lowkey stuff, only to have a godly mission from the digi-gods themselves. And she can emphasize with Jeri a little as well, both knowing loss. ) If done this way, we have our main three fighters, that goes to 4 with Ryo being introduced around when the main 3 gets ultimate, but we use him sparingly, until they get into the digiworld, then he stays permanently. During this time with Ryo away, we can see that he meets and works with Alice for a bit. Until they separate, then we'll have a total of 5 fighters with Impmon. More screentime, interconnection with characters, etc, Feel free to drop throughts

I started watching Digimon when I was a kid. The original Adventure, as well as 02, are something I still hold dear to my heart to this day. The first season especially. But despite of my long history with Digimon I didn't watch Tamers until I was an adult. And maybe that was for the best, in a way. Because today Tamers stands as one of my favorite Digimon seasons right alongside the other two mentioned. I love the main cast of characters, both the kids and their digimon partners. Takato is someone I greatly relate to, personality-wise, and also by being an only child. Overall, Tamers is a great season. While it might not be able to overthrow Adventure because my nostalgia goggles are on firmly, it still is something I wouldn't let go in exchange for anything. I'm glad I chose to watch the season when I did. Also the fact that in the English dub the Gekomon were making milkshakes caught me by surprise. I watched the Finnish dub which follows the original Japanese one more closely and so I'm used to them making sake. Although I do get why they changed it.

This remains my favorite series of Digimon. The tamer angle was awesome because it contributed more strategy to battle other than having your Digimon use their same attack over and over. Even the kids walking into the areas with their Digimon and glasses was stylish as hell. This is at the top of my list as a series I'd like to see revisited with a more adult spin. I could watch Digimon tamer teams investigating and hunting Digimon all day.

I don't think there will ever be a character like this impmon/Beelzemon in a Digimon anime, game, etc, the character has so much layers in tamers and he is developing every time he was on screen.I like all the characters but for me he was the real MC xD. Also as a mexican I have to say I like the latino dub so much more. Like now days I think I like to hear anime more in english, but at the time of tamers I really think we had fantastic voice actores dubbing anime, and they were killing it in tamers. I agree with you, Impmon’s character development is arguably the best out of any of the series. There’s something about the English language in the context of anime that fails to capture the nuances and inflections that languages like Japanese, German and Latino/Spanish enable voice actors to convey… I only watch Anime subbed now for this exact reason. But even though they are inferior the English dubs of 90’s and early 2000’s anime did a excellent job all round imo, albeit the dialogue changes and cutting of content does bother me… I’m so glad this video was able to bring back great childhood memories for you, thank you for sharing and for supporting the channel 🍻

@@raytaku_ If you plan to do a retrospective then make sure you watch Xros Wars and not the English dub (forgot the name, was it Digimon Fusion?). The censorship in western releases is usually stupid but it gets unbearable here. They also "kill" some characters by changing them completely. Like getting rid of all their quirks and personality traits (I'm still salty over how they changed Ballistamon. They changed a gentle robot into something that sounds like a cocky superman). I'm not sure how much of it was dubbed but there were 2 seasons and the sequel Digimon Xros Wars Hunters. The second season is something along the lines of "Digimon Xross Wars: The seven kingdoms and the seven death generals"

I fell into Digimon with S1. I loved S1 and humored S2 until disappointed by the abysmal ending. Tamers came and at first I begrudged how Different it was. But even in youth I came to realize. This truly was a better series, the characters were better both humans and mons. Renamon and Rika still live rent free in my head. After this, I couldn't bring myself to humor other shows. Maybe in the many years since, something valuable has happened but the few following series were no-gos for me after Tamers, and I wish for it to get more content the same way S1 characters have been the last few years.

I do feel like some of the side characters were under utilized, like Takato's friends who get some sweet partners (I freaking love Andromon and MarineAngemon) and especially Alice and Ryo. But gosh dang it, when the core themes and character arcs are that good, some lost potential on the side is barely a speedbump. Plus in an inverse way I kind of like there being other people, characters that we barely get to see on screen, also having intimidate relations to the Digital World that we just aren't privy to as viewers. It feels weird from a storytelling perspective, but makes the world feel believably large and intriguing from a worldbuilding perspective. I love Tamers. I still hold the first show in very, very high regard personally, but Tamers successfully usurped it as my favorite, and is a testament to good children's media.

I commented on the Frontier video about how Japanese values tend to get overlooked in this show when dubbed for other countries, but Jeri's mental health and suicidal ideations are actually biting commentary about lack of mental health resources in the urban areas of Japan. Actually, all anime and JRPGs are made all the better when viewing them from that lens. Actually, Rika's mother conceiving her when she was 16 was actually considered way more taboo in the original cut of this show. I'm surprised she acknowledges having a daughter at all on the show, since that's actually a strike against her as a career woman in Japan

I just finished rewatching this series, and it’s amazing how well it’s aged. It’s still the best digimon anime series, hands down. I’ve never really been a fan of biomerging, but ultimately, the gimmicks pale in comparison to the amazing character work that happened throughout. I love that this series treats the adult characters like human beings, and gives them both complexity and arcs. Ultimately it’s a show about emotional epiphany and growth, and I still think about my own struggles with depression when Rika and Renamon talk about choosing your own destiny. It’s a thematic gold mine.

Adventure 01 and Tamers are the best story-wise, ever. Adventure Angemon and Angewomon Redemption Arc walked so Leomon and Bleezemon could run, but both are groundbreaking in their own way. Even your speed-run-recap made me cry. Like that's how deep this trauma lives in my psyche.

Digimon Tamers I loved allot back in the day. I loved Jeri and her instant crush on Leomon when he first came into the city of Tokyo Shibuya. The battle at Saitama Stadium is an instant highlight for those who love J-League Football/Soccer.

Me too, I thought she was a nice addition to the cast and helped balance out the personalities. Her arc with Leomon was so wholesome at the start but by the end, utterly gut wrenching 😞

@@raytaku_ True, Leomon often has a tragic ending in many Digimon series. The episode with the Milkshakes, I clearly knew that was meant to be Sake in the Japanese version.
