@Ilgar Hmm, it depends on what you want to learn. You can do so many things with Blender. My video class will cover the fundamental skills needed to do this 3D/2D work. But I think it's nice to learn about Blender's lighting functionality and basic modeling. Blender Guru is a good channel for that stuff (though he's so popular I'm sure you already know about him).
@yancowles
@yancowles 5 жыл бұрын
@Ilgar +1 for Blender guru although I generally just search for tutorials based on whatever it is I'm trying to do at the time and you usually find one that's appropriate. I use it in bursts for my freelance work when I need to create 3d assets for animations so my requirements tend to be quite specific. I've never done any ground up series of tutorials but I am reasonably competent at using it now (as least, I like to think so).

Hi Marco, just wanted to say thank you for the effort you put into your videos and teaching. I'm not an art school student or anything like that and was a little frustrated about painting, thinking I'll never be that good. But your videos changed my mind, even if I'm not a great painter right now I can enjoy the painting process itself. I feel like I'm making a progress. Big thanks to you!

So two of my favorite youtubers (you and borodante) are putting out videos about using 3D to help issues with geometry, composition and perspective in a painting right around the same time. Do you know his channel? :D Anyway I'm really pleased with that! I never really thought about it and I'm really excited to try it out especially because I'm having some perspective issues on a painting I'm doing right now. There's just way too much houses in different orientations and stuff. I could get it to look good but it would take a while to figure everything out.

Always love your vids! Question: do you see any pitfalls or downsides an artist should be aware of when using 3D as a base?
@marcobucci
@marcobucci 5 жыл бұрын
I think a big one is that basic 3D renders (as I'm using here) tend to look very sterile, and far from illustrative or painterly. You have to apply a heavy hand of painting to reverse that, so if you use 3D as a base for your 2D work, be prepared to essentially re-draw or re-paint whatever you export from the 3D software.

Amazing work I learned a lot! thank you! also try Blender 2.8 it has more new cool features, I have a question about dark and shadows, I remember watching a video tutorial from Ryan Lang about Dynamic Range in paintings that can tell emotions, it was like Dark Scene with light accent or Contrast scene for giving you more intense feeling, so how we should execute this approach in our paintings to keep the darkest dark and lightest light in specific range to tell better story with dynamic range!
@marcobucci

Thanks for the question - that is certainly fodder for a whole other video! I'll keep it in mind. And yes, Blender 2.8 is super cool (it will be the software I use in my video class, so it's fully up to date :)

Hi Marco, great video as always :) I was wondering what do you think about limited time studies? Like for example 1 hour portrait study? I imagine it helps to learn to paint faster, but on the other hand you may not manage to learn what you were trying to study in the first place. For example I usually need more time to get colors accurately, so I am not sure if 1 hour color study makes sense for me. Any thoughts?
@marcobucci
@marcobucci 5 жыл бұрын
I'm of two minds about that one. I do think a time limit is good. For things like gesture drawings, having a 1-2 minute limit on each pose really promotes capturing the essence of the pose, rather than anatomy/lighting/detail. With painting it can be a little more troublesome because it's pretty easy to make a mess quickly. So what I'd recommend is, with a time limit, also make sure you're limiting which fundamentals you're using. You could probably do a sketched value study from the live model in 30 minutes. Maybe a more rendered one in 1 hour. But adding colour? You'll probably need longer. I think learning to paint faster depends more on how well you understand each fundamental (drawing/values/edges/color temperature), rather than how often you force yourself to paint fast. When I paint a slow painting my studio - but really take the time to understand how it's all coming together fundamentally - I can exercise that knowledge faster in a sketch.
@wiktorbudzinski7364
@wiktorbudzinski7364 5 жыл бұрын
Marco Bucci thank you for the response :) I will try doing some shorter value studies as per your suggestion. And maybe some shorter composition studies, as 1 hour thumbnail seems like something I may manage to do

Oh yeah, I'm definitely not breaking any ground here. I learned this approach about a decade ago when I was a matte painter at a studio. I just started revisiting it in my own work this year. And software like Blender is really making strides to bridge the gap from 3D to 2D.

Ah Blender, it is awesome although I found the initial learning curve somewhat steep having previously been used to Cinema 4d and suchlike. At first, it seems kind of deranged - why is mouse select based on a right click, what's with the weird dialogue windows that look like something from the 1990s! Oh god, and the accidentally creating new windows in the interface, I defy anyone just starting out to not end up with dozens of little windows that you keep trying to remove only to spawn more of the damn things. You get used to it though and you can change select to a left click easily enough and, oh yeah, IT'S FREE!

12:10 i wonder if this is related to symbol drawings, (you know, the kind people who don't draw draw) then. Are you painting your preconceived notion of what a victorian mansion background would look like, a poor representation, instead of what it actually is? Like a beginner would draw a simple symbol of the eye or nose? Also, i like that in your picture, the most warm colours are present in the vaguely (and probably intentionally) heart-shaped elevation in the floor

@marcobucci
@marcobucci 5 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I wouldn't think about it that way. I could have drawn those coffins with traditional tools (see my other videos where I do just that). As I discussed in this video, 3D is a good way of laying down many fundamentals all at once (value/shape/perspective in this case). It's a great way to explore ideas, which is relevant in today's entertainment industry. But it only works when you have solid drawing skills to back it up. That's what makes it not cheating. It's simply a tool that allows you to find what you're looking for, faster!
