I'm African. Mom black, dad black. Not mixed race. Black. I'm a bit lighter, especially since I started living in Europe and not getting a lot of sunlight. And I see it, I feel it. People treat me so much better than my darker skinned counterparts. And sometimes, they say, "you're not black black, you're métisse (I really am not)." When they say I'm not black black, they mean I'm better. They also say I'm not like other black people because even though I have black features, my wide nose is not the widest and my big mouth is not the biggest. One day, an Algerian man actually told me that he usually doesn't like black women because "they are ugly but I'm not that bad." I never bought meat at his butcher's shop again. I've had black men telling me the same thing. That I'm the baseline. They don't go darker than I (and I'm apparently supposed to see that as a compliment). This is so real that I have felt (once) threatened when a really light-skinned or biracial person with "better hair and better features" enter in the room (job interview). I've seen myself praying that I'm the only "light-skinned"there and that there isn't any biracial coming because I knew my privilege would be gone. My skin is lighter than many, but I'm still visibly black, my hair is like Mayowa's, my nose is still large, etc. And when I saw the biracial woman with loose curls and the "right features", I knew I was afraid. If there is only one spot for a black person, I lost it. Recently, a white French coworker told me that I'm not really that black so that make me prettier. She didn't used this word, but she said it. And I looked at her and asked: "what do you mean by that?" And she pretended she didn't understand. I asked again. She was like: "you can't take a compliment." WTF? And still, white people will gaslight us saying they don't see shades and black is black when we know they only promoted the Beyonces, Rihannas and Halle Barrys of the world. Biracial and light skinned black women will say that bringing up colorism is divise because we are all black. Like, not, we aren't. White people say it to not have to confront their racism by choosing black people who are closer to whiteness to be their exception. Biracials and light skinned people do it to not have to admit to the privilege because PRIVILEGE IS OFTEN BASED ON OPPRESSION. Light skinned privilege is based on dark-skinned oppression. Also, if we don't talk about it, it doesn't exist so we can all pretend our shade has no impact in our lives.

The funny thing is while you’re stressed about lighter or biracial people…they are stressed out and standoffish when I enter the room. I kicked down their pedestal, and I love talking about the beauty of being my tribe and my exoticness in being African. I do not mind playing up my accent either…🤣🤣🤣 I’ve been in spaces where you knew, or ai found out that previously to me being there they talked trash about BW appearance, but have nothing to say when I enter. Infact the same men talking trash were after me. One dude told me INFRONT of another coworker that the co-worker said he wanted to pick me up and eat my 🍑 and see how his whole face turned red. I kid you not. Meanwhile, these were the same men congregating around gossiping about BW told to me BY a BM (who was probably engaging in the fukery). And these people KNOW when they are being shady. The lightening of filters has always turned me off from them. I’m brown skinned and dark skinned in summer months but your content has really had me considering and understanding how things like featurism and fatphobia still factor into my privilege. With pinky doll it was very surprising to see her being darker/brown skinned. I think people are praising her because she’s using colorism to aid in her success under capitalism. So called “new blacks” and black capitalists will always endorse black people coming up through this oppressive system by any means so long as they don’t completely separate themselves from black ideals. In pinky dolls case, she’s not “actually” bleaching her skin but just using a filter so it’s not like she’s disassociating herself completely from her blackness in real life. However her online presence does have real life implications. This is not to come down on her as I will always choose empathy over hating on brown skinned and dark skinned black girls. Thank you for always holding these super important and meaningful conversations despite you getting a lot of heat for it from other black people.

Here's why congratulating her isn't the same as bleaching your own skin. It's a total false equivalence, like apples and oranges. Imagine this: You said it's like congratulating her for using a light skin filter online is the same logic as endorsing skin bleaching or lightening your own skin. But that's not quite right. See, people who congratulated her aren't necessarily saying they're okay with bleaching skin. It's more like they're saying, ""You smartly took advantage of a bad situation that the incel colorists in the manosphere created." So, to sum it up, saying "good job" to her doesn't mean they want to bleach their skin. I think what we are hearing is people giving her credit for using the system's flaws to her advantage.

There's something funny in this situation but it's not smart. It's complying to the beauty standard. Even from the comments you can see that it's not really something alot of our people care about until it IMPACTS them, or blocks access to something that should be easily attainable , that's when it becomes real, Worse when it's your child.

I've recently moved to Asia and the treatment I've received has me seriously considering skin bleaching. It's nice to hear that this isn't all in my head, and it is validating to know that I'm not the only person considering it for job hunting and survival purposes. It just makes me really fucking sad to be constantly fighting to show up authentically in a world that is unwilling to accept me as-is. I feel exhausted by the colorism that I grew up around and continue to be surrounded by and at this point I just want a way to live without being held back by things that i shouldn't even be thinking of controlling.

I did something similar to this. It’s sad that as a dark skinned woman you HAVE to have a “catch” if you don’t have a secondary ethnicity group supporting you it’s rough. Sometimes even if you do… I didn’t AI skin bleach but I did edit my photo to look worse than I did bc “just” being dark skinned isn’t enough. People like to see the weird dark girl with her lips twisted and being odd… but the fine girl can’t be dark… We are generally the only people that looks to us. Having little to NO ambiguity often limits our reach. When you go to a lighter complected persons page it just videos and their creations… but a darker creators you have all the catches, funny faces, “odd” makeup, weird transformations… I had this VERY conversation on my YT YEARSSSS ago… still here… we can address is til we’re blue in the face but what’s changing? The pressure is getting worsa.

1st & foremost, your makeup is STUNNING! You did amazing 🦋! Secondly, the topic at hand is just sad & hurts my heart. Like it’s one thing for ppl & society to have their preference on whether or not they want to date/engage w only light skin ppl, but when it comes to how it’s affects how those with dark skin are treated, the opportunities afforded or not related to skin tone it makes me sick!
@noreehix5714 Жыл бұрын
Digital skin bleaching is nothing new, now you can do it in real time with the AI technology. As a brown skin girl I once considered bleaching because I felt unprotected. Colorism and texturism takes a lot to unpack. I don't judge anyone who chooses to wear straight lace front or do their makeup in a way that highlights or lightens their skin. We should be allowed to be ourselves.
@mv9653 Жыл бұрын
Thinking about the skin bleaching comparison, my first impulse was to say, “but skin bleaching has actual harmful effects on the body but AI doesn’t,” but then I thought about how models who are edited to be thinner in photos and the correlation with an increase in eating disorders. It’s not just encouraging people to edit their bodies digitally, but to harm themselves to look like these edited photos. So, at least in theory, yeah, AI skin-lightening could absolutely encourage actual skin-bleaching.

That's so much in alignment with the energies of the moon..(that make of) how history affect us on a spiritual level, how colonialism, racism and colorism .. like she said "it's all connected".. and how things played out and affected our spiritual being, not just the mental, or the physical.. how generational trauma, pain, (adaptative) beliefs affects one's soul or a whole group and essential the collective (conscience/subconscious).. how much we need to discuss and responsabilise ourselves on our action.. whatever that means in the context of each person. I really love your content because you don't shy away from these topics you consistanly show up and question those things, I just to say how grateful and thankful I am for your content.. for being yourself, and not being afraid of standing for what you think and say it... and you don't how much you inspire people to do so.

She's naturally gorgeous and I hope she continues to prey on colorists and racists while cashing out as a proudly brown skinned woman. I stopped using snapchat just when it came out. I noticed what it did to my feature's. I'm already mixed but it was making me look more ambiguous. The Cuban woman is right. In Brazil, they have tons of mixed people and the mostly white mixed people are at the top.

Yes like every filter makes you a shade to 5 shades lighter and change your whole face structure. That’s why I don’t like them or use them often. I can’t remember the last time I used one. Pinky doll is in an industry where light skin gets ahead and she took advantage of that. She likely a millionaire in less than a year. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with tricking the system. Actual skin bleaching is way more drastic then “digital skin bleaching”. Bleaching your skin literally harms you and your psyche. Pinky doll knows she is brown skin. She looks in the mirror. You know the saying “don’t hate the player, hate the game”? Let’s hate colorism. Not the women who twist the colorist system. You don’t have to cheer her on but judging her and putting her down isn’t going to fix the issue of colorism.

Nappy headed Jojoba came out with a video saying that she's tired of how colorism is spoken about in terms of desirability. Like she's tired of people talking about how colorism is when a black guy prefers light skinned/mixed/non black women over dark skinned black women. With this whole issue coming out with Pinky doll, I hope we can finally talk about colorism in it's entirety because it is more than just being seen as desirable. If pinky doll was darker and/or less ambiguous looking would she be able to profit from the NPC trend she started? Or would someone else who is lighter/mixed/not black be able to profit off of something Pinky started?

I don't really know how I feel about this yet, apart from feeling sadness because in all likelihood she wouldn't have been as wildly successful if she looked more like herself. She looks so beautiful at the awards show. These filters, and photo editing are really damaging for people's self-esteem, confidence, and body image. It's so frustrating, because beauty standards come and go, and not many people can reach them, but that doesn't mean they aren't beautiful. While it may take a little while for me to get my head around how I'm feeling about this, one thing I am really sure about is that I love how KZbin has been working for recommendations for me this year. I've lost count of how many creators I've subscribed to after seeing an interesting video pop up on the home page. I didn't even get five minutes into this video before subscribing. Now I'm excited to catch up on all the content on this channel. I absolutely love this.

Love you so much Mayowa. You look stunning and your makeup is sooo cute! Your videos are always spot on. I think this specific issue surrounding colorism is an interesting one because PinkyDoll lowkey pulled one over on all of us, but especially on the colorists of the internet and of the world. I can’t help but feel happy for her because at the end of the day, she popped out in her own skin and clearly, she feels comfortable and beautiful in her own skin or she wouldn’t have done that. I agree with the fact that we should be focusing on uplifting darker skin tones and all of that, but I don’t think our progress toward eradicating colorism will be hindered greatly if people do it the way that PinkyDoll has. Colorism isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so I think we do need to be innovative in how we can bring attention to colorism and this definitely was a genius way to do it imo.
