In my last video we hiked together through the jungle of Taman Negara. The oldest jungle in the world. I showed you bloodthirsty beasts and plants that can heal - or kill.
In this video I show you the paradise island of Tioman. I settled on Juara beach for some time. It's on the east side of the island and it's very remote, so I'm almost alone here.
I moved into my accommodation in a small wooden hut on the beach. My office is in front of the door on the small porch. As a digital nomad, I can do a large part of my work from anywhere in the world. So I sit here every day at my computer and can now and then let my eyes wander over the sea.
According to legend, Tioman Island is the resting place of a beautiful dragon princess. While flying to Singapore to visit her prince, the beautiful maiden stopped to seek solace in the crystal clear waters of the South China Sea. Enchanted by the magic of the place, she decided to break off her journey. Taking the form of an island, she vowed to henceforth offer shelter and comfort to passing travelers.
Tioman has been used for thousands of years by Austronesian fishermen as an important navigation point, to replenish freshwater supplies and to cut timber. For the past thousand years, the island has been a port for Chinese, Arab and European merchant ships.
Due to its high mountains and its location 30 km offshore, Tioman has long been an important stopover point for trade from Thailand to Indonesian islands such as Java.
Even today, shards of Chinese porcelain can often be found on the beaches around the island.
In recent history, Tioman was in the hands of both the British and Japanese navies during World War II. As a result, the waters around the island are littered with remnants of war, including the wrecks of the British battlecruiser HMS Repulse and the battleship HMS Prince of Wales, which was sunk here by Japanese planes after chasing the German battleship Bismarck. These lie at a depth of 50 to 70 meters and are therefore reserved for technical divers.
My beach is on the east side of the island, facing the open sea. The port, where the ferry from the mainland docks once a day, is on the other side of the island. The way from here leads on the island's only road, the arduous path high above the jungle mountains. That's why a supply ship comes to this side of the island once a week and docks at this pier.
I only brought a bottle of water to the island. Here I refrain from buying more water in the shop. Because we all know that what the water industry produces is not water, but plastic bottles. There are several springs from the rain forest in the mountains, from which the tap water is taken here. So I draw this water from the tap here every morning and boil it. Delicious clean water. Only the last sip from the pot is sometimes sandy.
In the coconut palms on the beach there is always a lot of clamor in the morning, because there the flying foxes hang upside down to sleep. At night they fly through the island's forests and eat fruit. After their return, they argue for a while about the best places to sleep.
