The only short-stay visa that doesn’t require opening a bank account and doesn't have staying conditions is the Schengen visa, which has a period of 90 days. However, it doesn’t guarantee entry to Portugal, as you must first substantiate the reason for entry - documents that confirm the purpose of your visit.

@@silverismoney if you have a visa of any Schengen country you can go ANYWHERE in Schengen, it’s a total freedom of movement, freedom of movement doesn’t imply freedom of work, however a foreigner who has a work permit to work in a Schengen country can work anywhere in Schengen area if he is working to a company that is based in the Schengen country where he has the work permit. For instance, there are many foreigner truck drivers working in France to Portuguese companies holding work permit from Portugal. The only thing they can’t do is working to a company based in France

I would presume that a US citizen who has over $2000 per month in Social Security along with 10,000 Euros in a Portuguese bank account and other passive and digital incomes he will have a good looking application.
