I sold my horse farm in Canada in 2021. The pandemic shut down most of my work, what is left is online. I could no longer afford to live in Canada on my income. I did my research and chose Portugal, for many reasons. My search criterium included culture, crime rate, natural disasters and politics. I planned to downsize and ended up buying a larger home with an apartment. I live on the coast and wake up to watch the fishing boats and listen to the waves before bed from my rooftop terrace. The food is fabulous. The people are wonderful. The climate perfect. I am the happiest I have ever been.

I was born in Portugal and visit often from my Home in the USA. Advice to Americans moving to Portugal: Dial it down. Be patient, not pushy. In American supermarkets if (God forbid) there's a long checkout lane, another one or two will quickly open up. Not in Portugal. Their pace is slower and more relaxed, and it's one of the reasons I love it. As my Portuguese friends often tell me, "Americans live to work, we work to live". ❤🇵🇹

A quite adventurous path, we would like to clarify: Schengen Visa requires a stay on the territory up to 90 days, but if you overstay, there is a possibility that the Visa will not be issued. And you could get the status of illegal immigrant. Also, we may assume that your application for citizenship will subsequently be considered less willingly. These details must be taken into account when choosing this path.

I couldn't help noticing how you mentioned people don't want to pay taxes but they DO WANT to live in a safe & stable country. How do you think Portugal manages to be a safe & stable country? Is it not by having taxes that pay for policing, social services, education, health, the arts, and everything that makes a cohesive & inclusive society?
@ilanameyer2 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna, people want to pay fair taxes and receive something in return. When investors feel they are paying unfair taxes (and this is of course subjective!) they start looking for a better solution.
@donnacosta56332 жыл бұрын
@@ilanameyer The portuguese people want to pay fair taxes too... as much as you do. But at present they have to pay very high taxes because others don't pay their fair share. On a salary of 1000 Euros a month (which is just above the minimum wage in Portugal and the average income for around 80% of the population) the worker pays 226 Euros in taxes, that is 22,6% of the salary and the employer has to add another 240 Euros, or 24% on top. A total tax of 46,6% has to be paid on a monthly salary of 1000 Euros. Fair share you think???? I'm not against foreigners taking advantage of portuguese government policies to attract big money with Gold Visas etc. Just be careful how you say "People don't want to pay taxes.... they want to live in a safe country" And if possible, inform yourself on the financial difficulties of the portuguese population and PLEASE insert a bit of that realism into your videos. Too much to bother?... P.S. The video was beautifully shot.

@@donnacosta5633 It sounds like the Portuguese are paying high taxes so rich foreigners can live in a safe and stable country.
@donnacosta56332 жыл бұрын
@@rfink222 The Portuguese have been paying high taxes all their lives, nothing new. What is new since 2012 is that the government has been trying to attract BIG money with easy Gold Visas & low taxation perks while the locals continue to pay high taxes. As yet Gold Visas have had no benefit for locals whatsoever, and as prices of property have risen due to the demand by wealthy foreigners, many locals cannot afford to buy or rent now. This is becoming a serious problem. I bought my flat back in 1988, in my late twenties, when I was earning just above the portuguese minimum wage and many of my age did the same. Almost anyone who wanted to, could buy a flat or home. That was easy & possible then and through the next 30 years, but impossible now. I hope the government has a plan to get some real benefit back from all these Visas. If not, Portugal will become increasingly unaffordable for the locals and once again in portuguese history they'll have to emmigrate to make a living elsewhere... just when things are getting better and Portugal is becoming a good place to live... for some. I'm not against foreigners coming to Portugal with Gold Visas... But PLEASE be aware locals are paying exhorbitant taxes for the good quality of life we all enjoy & want. The tax burden should be shared by all those that live in Portugal. (But I've got a suspicion the government has got a secret plan... you've heard it here first. Let's wait & see...)

What happens to the common and locals people that live there when “outside” money influences their way of life?
@Migroniscitizenship2 жыл бұрын
Hello …! Thank you for the interesting question! The dynamic we see is that because of the high number of outside investors, who buy real estate, the cost of property and rental are rising. But at the same time, investments provide an opportunity to get new workplaces for locals, which is certainly a positive contribution.
@adiscirkic96612 жыл бұрын
Yes of course !! That’s great news!! But if the cost of the living and property increases 20% because outside investors are pouring in but your wages increase 2% how does that effect the locals ? If you make 50 euros per day but a nice dinner for 2 is 100 euros how does the local market correct that ?
