Digital Non-Contact Powder Level Meter and Alarm for Reloading

I made this powder level meter for my Lee powder measure. It can be adapted to work with any make or model, including RCBS, Hornady, Lee, and Lyman. It is 100% solid state and does not contact the powder.

cool tool you designed. I would recommend let it update slower and with the average value of 10 measurements, like every 5 seconds or so (adjustable). Also way to much features, an easy one that will not do calculations but only beep at

Very good idea but I don't think it's really necessary for powder hoppers, especially when running pistol cases as it's hard to run out of powder before you visually check the hopper. If you made something like this to check the powder charge in the case, then you'll have a viable product.

can you use this same idea to make a laser powder check die? With alarm and programming screen and button like you have there.

Looks like a Sharp sensor, it doesn't use time of flight, it measures the reflection angle to get distance.

Is it measuring the distance from the center of the powder pile? If so there might be a problem reading the powder, because i notice when i reload using the exact same powder measure the powder actually funnels down the middle of the powder pile in the hopper. So if takes a measurement in the middle it will actually read a that the powder is lower then it actually is.

That's a nice make. Maybe one idea, a little speaker/piezo buzzer for the alarm? Or just something that beeps a few tones, it doesn't have to be loud if your sitting in front of it. Just something to make you look up. Nicely done.

Doesn't Lee have a chart with the densities of powders on it you could use?

Yes, you could derive the grains/mm value if you wanted to. All settings are saved to flash, so you only need to change values if you switch out powders.

Guess you're a newbee in reloading - those cylinders are getting blind and dark sooner or later depending on the used powders. Wish I had one like this! I will probaby build one with a plate, a switch and a buzzer soon.
