Been trying to explain this to my Sister for some time. I will email this video link to her as I think it illustrates it perfectly!

@cirmothe9 the same as you but I just bought the 18-200mm lens and its brilliant. I would keep your eyes on this as your next lens. Good luck

Don't be afraid of the 55mm-300mm lens :)

Do you think use a white reflector would be better than a flash in that situation? At least make the light more natural? Gr8 video again, but too short lol

I have a 18-55mm(kit) wide angle lens and a 55-200mm telephoto lens. I really like the 55-200mm but I'm restricted to using it in open outdoor space. Whenever I'm taking pictures in a room, I need to use the 18-55mm due to space constraints. There's just not enough space to place between me and the subject.

@pjos111 Thanks. I was considering that. But I think I want a macro lens to be my next one. That or one with a large aperture.

will the effect be the same if you used 50mm and compose the same composition like you composed it when you used the 300m

Good point about the actual "video" footage .. someone really had the manual iris on way too far open to burn out the image so much, or a very bad automatic exposure on that video camera. Second, although I understand the video is trying to make a point about blurring out the extraneous background by making the depth of field shallower by using a longer focal length lens, but I see a major tendency in these demo videos of 'poor' composition, by shooting models such as the nice blonde in the..

.. in the standard TV horizontal framing, which is definitely NOT the way to make flattering portraits, but in the VERTICAL aiming of the camera. Obviously you would not do that with a VIDEO camera, but with a still 35mm or Digital still camera you would not have shot that demo in the horizontally oriented frame.

this video is really lacking a discussion, or at least a mention of, the word "perspective." There's more than one reason to choose a longer lens, and getting a smaller background is just one example.

This is actually one of the worst explanations for someone who really have no imagination and any basic knowledge Without showing how the framing changes depending on the focal length of the lens, but keeping the same size of the subject (i.e. go further with the longer lens to keep the subject framing) - it messes up more than explains...
