Lol...little Logan Fix it is adorable!! I love how he is so willing to help, even if is only for a few seconds lol. I can't tell you how many times I've used knives as screwdrivers 😃 I used what I had! We have one of those old doctor scales in our garage. Haven't seen it in a while but its here some where! Awesome, informative video!

Yes! I have used a butter knife as a screwdriver many a times. Still do from time to time. Sometimes it is easier to reach in the utensil drawer than go run to the garage. I too love little dude helping out! He is going to be great at home repair. That is my hope anyway. I have some more things planned with Logan that I think people will enjoy. Thank you for watching!

Hey Fixit Guy: My didital Tanikascale failed exactly they way your's did…disconnected black wire from battery case. I went through the same issues did, in trying to open the case with no luck. I was about to give up as well…then I found this video and watching it clued me into taking out the battery case. I had the same problem stripping off a bit of the insulation from the black wire. Easy method…just heat the tip of the wire, very carefully with the soldering iron and the insulation just melts away. Scale now works normally, just the way it did before…even kept the settings. THANKS Big & Little Fixit Guys.

Thanks for your video. My Tanita on/off button was stuck in place. (Kids playing with it). I replaced the batteries and it still didn’t work. I have a different model to yours, but same battery housing. I followed what you did, but could see my connectors were both still attached. I put it all back together ready to throw it out, tried new batteries 1 more time. Lo and behold my Tanita works and it had saved all my previous settings. Thank you for your video, it helped me a lot.

Great video brother. Great way to show there is no need to buy a new one if you just take a minute to check it out might be a easy fix. That’s a great little helper you got there.

Often times the wire that is used for many consumer electronics have a cheap plastic insulation, which means you can just heat the end of the wire (either with a hot iron or a bic lighter) and the insulation will shrink back. If heat didn't work and you don't have the correct size wire strippers then go at it with your knife. You can only work with the tools you have, right? As for the soldering, tin the wire first (heat the wire and add some solder, flux is your friend here). Then to solder use the iron to heat the solder on the terminal until it melts and add the tinned wire. Just like sweating pipes it is all about heat mass. Great job getting it to work!!!

Ok cool! You made it look too easy the last time you fixed the sound machine for us. I am going to look at getting a soldering set up for my bench. We need to hang out at some point so you can show me some pointers.

wow like many others here, my Tanita BF-679W had the exact same issue! Corrosion plus getting bumped around -> black wire snapped off of battery box. Maybe if they hadn't used...24 or 26? gauge wire, this wouldn't have been an issue. The lengths these companies go to in order to save a few pennies. 🙄 Thanks for the video!

Great video. This was exactly the issue I had with my Tanita Ironman scale. Those disposable alkaline batteries have a tendency to leak and cause corrosion if they are drained and left in the device for an extended period of time. That's why I try to use rechargeable batteries for stuff like this. They don't leak and corrode like the disposable alkaline ones do.

Don't take it apart. Just flip it over and spray a touch of WD-40 into the crevice between each foot and the body. Let it sit overnight. And better than new. Did this on a Homedics SC-475 bathroom scale that was displaying incomplete digits. A simple case of dirty electrical contacts.

Good job, I cringed a few times watching it, when your son was closing the knife blade, when you were removing the battery box, tugging on the lid, stripping the wire, soldering with that huge gun and nasty looking tip too. LOL But you got to do what you gotta do to git'er done. Now to carefully trim the insulation off that wire it should be held securely using needle nose pliers holding the wire close to the area you're about to trim off the insulator and carefully make a circular cut around the circumference of the insulation using a razor or exacto knife and not cutting or nicking any of the individual wire strands. I would add another length of black wire of the same gauge to extend the overall length carefully soldering the two pieces together end-to-end and slip a piece of heat shrink tubing down the length to cover the soldered joint, use a hair dryer or heat gun and only enough heat to shrink the tubing and then attach the now lengthened wire to the battery box negative terminal end. Also, here's a tip. before muscling out the battery box, use a hair dryer or heat gun set on low to warm the plastic to make it less brittle and more flexible before manipulating the tabs to prevent them from being damaged, or the hinges on the lid. A leatherman is a unique tool, but definitely not my first choice of tools to work on something as delicate as this battery box and wires of 22 or 28 gauge. Always secure the wire you're stripping to prevent putting stress on the wire connection at the other end of the wire you're working on and gently make the cuts as shallow as possible to not nick or cut the wire strands. Use the needle nose pliers to hold the wire as you solder it. It helps to tin the end of the wire first, also clean the soldering tip by heating it first to melt the leftover solder and using a dampened folded paper towel or rag to wipe the molten solder off. And the soldering iron you're using is way to big as is the solder you're using and you need electrical solder which has the flux in it, plumbing solder is not for electrical connections. Plumbing solder is very acidic and will corrode the wires and connectors. You can find pencil type soldering irons and kits on Amazon or other websites for cheap, also find in the kit solder removal tools (solder suckers) and other handy tools, iron holder, and Oh, yeah, fine diameter electrical solder. Stop using plumbing solder and dirty tips on your iron.

Thank you for the detailed description on how to repair the scale. I cringed when my son closed that knife as well. He is much better at this point with his knives. I am planning on getting a nice soldering iron and a getting some practice in.

@@ThatFixItGuy you could probably find a few videos on KZbin on soldering instructions and guides on types of soldering irons. Is that Rick from “Pawn Stars” on your desktop? And it is great that you are getting your son involved. Soon he can have his own channel!😊. The deck of the scale probably floats. If removed, you may have had a bit more length of wire to solder. And a clothes pin may act as a hemostat to hold the wire in place.
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 4 жыл бұрын
A clothes pin is a great idea. I saw the other end of that wire and it was attached to a little two pronged plug that I don’t know if I could have got. Lol! I wish I had an autographed Rick!! It is Terry Crews! Former Green Bay Packer and funny man! And man I don’t know if people would want to watch Little Fix It. He would only want to do 30 sec videos lol. He may want to do this when he gets older! Thanks for watching.

The reason you couldnt solder the components is 3 things. !. Be sure neither surface is oxidised(Purpose of Flux) 2. You should "tin" or pre coat both surfaces with solder so they have fresh unoxidiesed soilder to combine. 3. make sure ANY surface your soldering is heated up before applying solder (stick the gun to the point or wire and then push together while applying solder)

yes, those guns are overkill and bulky but they are very fast and versatile for most fixes unless you are doing tiny SMD repairs then get a smaller one.@@ThatFixItGuy
