I really like this jig. As someone who is new to woodworking the idea of getting consistent cuts on the left of the blade was a really hard process to repeat and your jig solves this issue. Excellent video as always!

Honestly, if you're using square stock to begin with - you can safely cut thin strips between fence and blade if you start with stock that is long enough to "flip" end for end without getting close to the blade. 3' or so is ideal. Cut to the halfway point, then lift the stock off the blade, flip it end-for-end, and then finish the cut from the other end. You hold on to the strip the whole time so there's relatively no chance of anything "kicking". The only "pro" I've ever seen do this is the old guy here on KZbin - Bob Chase . But it's also how I was taught. No jigs, no outfeed table, no gopher catching the off-cut required and you're in total control of both the 'save' and the 'offcut' at all times. FWIW I also make all manner of square rips this way - any width, and any length stock as long as it clears the ceiling when "flipping".

Good idea there. The jig makes the job much safer and produces better results. Not everybody knows that thin strips should not be cut on the fence-side of the blade, or some people get lazy and do it anyway until the day that strip is thrown back like a spear. Here's a small suggestion that probably isn't needed for this smaller jig: Instead of using ordinary washers under a wingnut, try using the 1/4" thick square washers made for Unistrut steel channel. They'll work much better, especially on a load-bearing jig.

I tend to think a design that does not require moving the fence and hitting a certain jig is better. Each time you move a large fence and bumping it against a jig won't there be recoil and uncertainty? How accurate is this? How repeatable?
@bellevuesnekkeri
@bellevuesnekkeri 5 жыл бұрын
Of course one has to be moderate in the slamming of the fence, but as long as the jig is fixed to the mitre slot or dowels like in my case, it is not that problematic. you cannot overturn the threads on the adjustment bolt. It is more that accurate enough for what I do, but I have not checked its repeatability

you have a nice band saw, just set the blade drift and rip with that, save you a lot of trouble and a lot safer.
@bellevuesnekkeri
@bellevuesnekkeri 6 жыл бұрын
That could also be done, but I cannot get control over the drift on this saw, not even with a wide blade, and after hours of tuning. But I wish I could, as there would be a lot less waste on expensive exotic woods
@DEeMONsworld
@DEeMONsworld 6 жыл бұрын
not to detract from your method, it is relatively safe and if you have a table saw an elegant solution, but any band saw can have its' fence set for drift. It involves proper tensioning of the blade (thin or wide), about a D on the music scale if you pluck it, (no joke), and blade guide adjustment. Just run a pc. of sheet or stock free hand to a parallel pencil line scribed on the wood. one you have observed and adjusted the feed to the line IE "drift", stop the saw and adjust your fence to the edge of the wood. should be a one time per blade adjustment, but if you resaw thick pcs you may have to fine tune to the stock. We used band saws to accurately cut 3/4" 4x8 sheets of plywood ( large 36" saw) to re-sawing 4-5"" stock on a small Delta 14" saw. The result of a band saw blade however is not as smooth as a carbide tipped circular blade. Most of the time running through a surface planer would be required in either case. try using a skip tooth band saw blade they clear sawdust more efficiently which can interfere with your cut.

After over 40 years as a cabinetmaker, that last time I needed to measure in thousands of an inch was never. I can see the gage useful for getting it close but every saw blade cuts differently, some leave more on the inside and some more on the outside. So the thickness needs to be checked AFTER it's cut to make sure you are getting what you need. Granted that you get better strips by cutting to the outside than inside, but measure to make sure it's what you want. Also, I have been using throw away push sticks made from 1/4" fir 3 ply plywood all these years. need to cut a 1/8" strip? just run the push stick through the blade with the strip. fancy push sticks aren't necessary, especially the ones you buy...they are a ripoff.
@bellevuesnekkeri
@bellevuesnekkeri 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. The digital gauge is not meant for setting the width, because as you say all setups and blades are different. It is only meant for making the correct adjustments after the first cut is made. Make a rough adjustment with a measuring device., measure using a dial caliper, and then make the adjustment, and Voila, the desired width is on the finished piece.

Sorry, but that is too complicated. Three easy ways to do this : 1) Flip the cut piece half way through. 2) Make your own push sticks and run the push stick through the blade. 3) Make a long strip of your thickness cut, and cut it up into multiple lengths equaling your fence length. Run a piece through, add one of the sticks between the fence and blade, run your piece through, add another stick between the fence and blade and keep cutting and adding sticks between the fence and blade. I find the simpler methods give the best results. My favorite is the 2nd method because it does not leave tooth marks on the piece. Cheers.
