Looking back nearly 12 years, it always amazed me how much effort the US put into marketing this change and notifying viewers. Canada only started notifying about 90 days prior and most of the ads were self serving sales pitches by Bell, Rogers and Shaw to switch to a pay service subscription. Not one station in Canada even marked the occasion. Don’t even recall it being news on the transition day which was august 31 2011. OTA is an after thought in Canada.
@SymbolOfPeace82 жыл бұрын
We were informed beginning in June of 2008 about the February and then June 2009 DTV transition. We had a full year warning and OTA viewers got special attention given to them. The FCC in America wanted to just cover their own rumps for selling out the Antenna users to cellular companies. It was no great service to us. Antenna users in the US still got rammed in the whole Repack deal. Don't let these advanced in depth warning videos fool you. Not to mention in North America the ATSC 1.0 digital signal is so compressed it is absolute horse manure in quality for the cable and satellite users and only marginally better for free OTA users. Come February 17th and June 12th, 2009 transmitters still weren't even decent quality with their compressed transmissions of the compressed digital signals. Over 300 crucial stations nationwide were bribed with millions of dollars to cease operation and go dark forever. Check out Antenna Man on KZbin, he has a whole in depth history on the shady DTV FCC Repack deal of 2008. Look up Multi-Path Interference and you'll see how weak and cheap the digital signal is compared to the former NTSC Analog signal.

@@SymbolOfPeace8 I’m very aware of what went on. However terrible you think the US broadcast industry is and the shady FCC deals, Canada is far worse. In major cities, you are lucky to have 5 signals in Canada if you aren’t near the US border. In fact there are many areas that only have 1 channel or even no reception at all. Canada was also effected by the repack. I believe Canada completed the repack over the past few months. We actually still have some NTSC stations in some markets. For example CHRO which is the CTV2 affiliate for eastern Ontario, the Pembroke Ontario transmitter is still transmitting in analog on Ch.5. I totally get the flaws of ATSC but the reality is just about every home has widescreen TVs these days with digital tuners. I doubt anyone is watching the NTSC signals that remain. Speaking of ATSC, I know many US markets are adopting ATSC 3.0. That I can almost guarantee will never happen in Canada. We will lose OTA reception entirely before that ever happens.

Also here in the states the Government was giving away the DTV converter boxes for free to ppl with older tvs so they didn't have to upgrade TVs

They need to make sure the public's tv is capable of receiving their propaganda. Cant have people thinking on their own, thats just silly.
@straightpipediesel Жыл бұрын
@@nick56677 The money came from the cell phone companies who paid $20 billion for the spectrum that was freed. The government spent a little over $1 billion on the coupons. That's fair and pretty normal, just it usually happens between businesses or the government itself and not with consumers.

You probably wouldn't have due to a said tv could only recieve one or the other signal, of analog or digital at once. Unless you had a tv like mine where you could toggle between analog and digital at the same time with a button on the remote, or go through the inputs manually to get to either analog or digital.
