The new Roland TD-27 electronic drum sound module offers connectivity with the digital Roland PD-140DS snare pad, just like the TD-50 does. So once again, the question for e-drummers arises:
"What exactly are the differences between a digital PD-140DS and an analog snare pad like the drum-tec diabolo or pro series? Do I have to switch to digital to get full functionality with my TD-27 or TD-50 module?"
We took quite some effort to shoot a detailed comparison of diffrerent drum-tec snare models and the PD-140DS, demonstrating all relevant functions and features like overall trigger performance, cross stick, positional sensing, buzz roll and hot spot.
You can find all pads, modules & components from the video here in our online shop:

I think for most applications an analog snare will be a great option. The digital snare shines in its lack of hotspots and cross stick function but these are not really massive problems. You can also use the analog snare with Pearl, 2Box, Roland, Alesis and even Yamaha(sort of) modules while this digital snare is only compatible with the TD-50 and TD-27. In my opinion, the price to performance ratio of the analog snare is much better than that of the digital snare.

I tried my friends digital snare with the TD50 and the positional sensing was nice but not mind blowing. However when I plugged the TD50 and digital snare into Superior Drummer 3 it was amazing with a much bigger depth of articulations. It made playing the snare a lot more fun... but for an amateur drummer it also shows all your mistakes! But the big point is whether it’s worth the $$$ to upgrade just to gain a few articulations. Hmmm.

Hi, it will trigger just as good as any other Roland sound module (they all do), and it has positional sensing. So it´s a perfect module for triggering, without the need to go for a TD-50 possibly. Kind regards!

I have the PD140 and it's great, of course. Do I think it's leaps and bounds better than analog? Meh. Not really. I could see it if a normal rim click is that important to your style of drumming (and for some it may be). I think a digital hi hat WOULD be worth it, though. Come on, Roland!

Great to see a comparison done like this! I have a drum-tec pro 14” snare and the hot spot in the centre is much more pronounced with my TD-17. Is this a limitation of the module or is there anything I can do to reduce it? Thanks!

Hey Matt, thank you! Are you using a Real Feel head & is it tightened well? What trigger settings are you using for the pro snare on the TD-17? Hotspot shouldn´t be drastically different from in the demo with the TD-27. Kind regards!

How is the positional sensing on the TD-25 with the PDX-100? Is it worth it to still buy the TD-25KV instead of the TD17KVX?
@drumtecTV
@drumtecTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, positional sensing is great if you pair the kit with a bigger snare, let´s say a diabolo 13" for example. With the 10" PDX-100, it´s quite limited because you don´t really have a lot of space to make use of the positional sensing. Apart from this, it´s really up to personal sound taste first of all, since the TD-25 sounds more like a TD-30, while TD-17 sounds more like a TD-50. Tech wise, I think the TD-17 has more useful features, and you can assign the tom rim sounds independantly, which you can´t on the 25. Kind regards!

@Chrisloft

The digital snare are for those don't know how to configure snare and don't know how to create good kits...The differences is 10% from analog, same as ride compare to ATV. Justin from 65 drums reported on his channel. 10% change from digital ride to ATV ride. Average people need to cease and stop overestimating these as must, they are not at all, they are for good for people can't configure properly edrums.
