"To put it in perspective, would be like designing a game that only runs on RTX 4090". Perfect analogy, John. This was truly what made arcades special in the 90s. Purpose built hardware. It's why so many home consoles at the time were trying to claim "arcade graphics" in their advertising. It was the gold standard in terms of visuals at the time.

Great video, John. One nitpick: front/rear speaker balance is adjustable in Supermodel using `-balance` or `Balance` in the config file (-100 to 100). The Model 3 has two SCSPs for generating sound, each producing different stereo outputs. In Daytona 2, one of the SCSPs drives the front speakers and the other the rear speakers. We mix these equally in Supermodel, which appears to drown out the rear speaker audio. But you can weight it more heavily toward the rear speakers to fix the problem.

EDIT: I've just been informed Iizawa was a programmer again on Virtua Fighter 3tb Online, and Hayakawa was one of the system programmers.

Digital Foundry - SEGA's Ryuga Gotaku team announced that Virtua FIghter 3tb will be included in the 8th Ryuga Gotaku/Yakuza game. Also, they are contemplating on releasing a Model 3 Arcade compilation but in order to receive it, we'll need to make *A LOT OF NOISE* for them to recognise that there is a demand for it in the west. The louder the noise for all model 3 games with ROLLBACK NETCODE, full multiplayer online, Crossplay, all model 3 games with ranking modes and so on, the higher the chance we'll get it. No noise, no get.
@TK1s_Big_Love11 ай бұрын
How do we make this noise though? Do they not see these videos? Are they not aware of Supermodel or how good it is now? What do they fucking want from us?! After all these years of people making content about how Sega need to port/rerelease/remaster/RESPECT the quality titles that not only made "Sega" such an exciting and innovative brand, but are also *literally keeping these titles and (to a certain extent) the name Sega alive*, Sega continue to piss around with the stuff that their longstanding fans actually want. Unless they start properly updating these IP's, there's only so long that these titles will be valid for. Nintendo generally respectfully curate their stuff as time goes by...but by mostly focussing on Sonic, etc and ignoring their legendary 3D arcade titles, Sega are heading into Atari territory. Daytona 2 is without a doubt one of the greatest arcade racers ever made, but I'm not fucking buying an unrelated full price game because there's an *emulated, offline, 4:3, inferior version with fewer options and concessions to modern sensibilities of a game that i can play 4P splitscreen on my mid-range PC* that's available as as a fucking minigame plonked within it. All in the hope that they'll maybe, possibly, release something that i can actually give them some money for..? They've not even released VF5:US on PC *or even PS5! - it's PS4 back-compat!* Or the 360/PS3 version of Daytona 1/SRC on PC! Or Switch Virtua Racing on...anything else! Or not farm out Daytona Championship to a team that, for whatever reason, could only reverse engineer Sega Racing Classic and release it with nice graphics but no 4-way shifter! Or...Or..! Sorry for the rant EAprima, this isn't really aimed at you and i love that John/DF have made this video, but Sega need to get a goddamn grip with this shit. My entire life i've watched them fart out wanky arcade conversions or make bizarre and disappointing release decisions - but making *the first and only home port of DAYTONA USA FUCKING 2, something i've been waiting more than 20 years for, a game-within-a-game* has finally tipped me over the (battle on the) edge. Dickheads. (Not you EAprima, sorry😢 )

@@TK1s_Big_LoveWELL SAID! Don't worry, I know you are not ranting at me and, trust me wholeheartedly when I say this, but everything you said... everything, I screamed it all at SEGA directly nearly 20 years ago! Yes. I shouted and screamed at SEGA's management. Quite simply, SEGA doesn't want to make easy money. So don't worry, I felt and understood every malice sentence you typed, and I whole heartedly agree with you. Unfortunately, many of the people at SEGA are new and, once again, don't see beyond their office window and from their locale spaces. They only know Japan and Japan alone... They think they know the west but they don't know squat, and tons of them don't take the right initiative to learn the west properly so they can prevent themselves from making low-hanging fruit executions that resulted in botch and/weak conversations. Oh yes. That supermodel version. Sorry, that version is DEFINITELY better than Sega's effort. Nothing beats playing Daytona USA 2 at 4K, wide screen, everything glossed up using the very latest supermodel emulate and with NETWORK PLAY OF UP TO 16 PLAYERS!!! OH yes, SHAME ON SEGA FOR NOT REACHING OUT TO THE SUPERMODEL TEAM. I know the guy that created the emu and he said he would have been DELIGHTED to help Sega get the code up and running so it can be used for anything they want. All the Supermodel team wanted more than anything was to have the Model 3 board games running perfectly on anything and everything, and they much rather have SEGA release the games than for people to go the high seas. Unfortunately, SEGA didn't do that. If they did do it, we could have had Sega Rally 2, Scud Race and Daytona 2 around 5 years ago because those three games especially were the closest to perfection.

It was mind blowing. I thought maybe it was like Killer instinct, as in the backgrounds or characters were FMV. Nothing else I'd seen looked like that, even 2 years later. I wrote the rendering engine for the supermodel emulator. Ask anything :) The reason that the like a dragon gaiden emulation is too bright is because the lighting is clamped. In daytona they used an unclamped model which on the back faces will actually subtract from the ambient lighting. Since supermodel is open source .. I do wonder how much 'inspiration' they took when writing their own emulator. In supermodel if you create a custom 57.5hz resolution, supermodel will use this and work at the correct original frame rate, judder free. You don't even need a special screen to do this, it works on my nothing special 1080p asus display.

Tremendous episode! Always fascinated by the Model 3 and this era of gaming in the mid to late 90s. Soo much can be discussed...I'll just leave it at, Thanks for this episode. 👍

Took Sega long enough to make a model 3 emulator! Daytona 3 should get a home port!

Daytona 2 looks more fun than all modern, more realistic, UE5-whatever, raychasing games today.

Excellent video John, thank you so much for your hard work. I miss SEGA and it's magic, still can't get over that they had to abandon hardware manufacturing. It is fantastic that Daytona USA 2 can finally be experienced at home on a console. My PS5 is gonna be happy.

Them satisfying jiggle and vibration animations that accentuate gravity, air, and speed. Never understood why more games, even today, don't do better on this

I've been waiting so long for a proper Daytona USA 2 it seemed like it would never happen. I really hope Sega release a proper Model 2/3 collection, as 24 hrs is one of my favourites. I was always playing that in Sega world. Daytona 2 and 24hr were some of the few games I could play and win 1st in the arcades. Great memories!

Awesome video, there was nothing like walking into a 90's arcade as a new racing game was released. Although in the early comparisons, missing Ridge Racer and Rave Racer out was a misstep personally, probably the closest competition Sega had imo.

Wow, you took me back hard! I was so excited to play these games and was wondering when I was going to get these graphics on Dreamcast or console...Sadly was never the same but a close port in the later years.. Super Gt Arcade was sexy. Thanks for the Video

Despite Model 3 was made in 1996, it was still way more powerful than a Dreamcast. Therefore it was impossible to have the same texture or high resolution on the 128 bit console. Furthermore, the Model 3 had different steps evolution, bringing it to another level. For me it was the pinacle of the arcade. After that Sega had to reduce costs and we know that the Naomi 2 wasn’t as amazing as the first impression of the Model 3.

Also my favorite 3D game time, we were just blown away by each release starting by virtua Fighter 1 Arcade. I am surprised and missing Ridge Racer other great contender that was pushing high end 3D / design / music and style! These were the pillars ridge Daytona and Sega rally.

I'd love a df retro feature on the history of Virtua Fighter and its various home conversions. The Saturn port of VF2 and the ps2 adaptation of VF4 have always interested me given the vast difference in (complex) hardware compared to their arcade counterparts

I was waiting for this video to come out! I really liked the filtering they added to visuals - gives it that grainy arcade look. I really do wish there were some audio options though as I would like to hear the engine sounds a bit more.

I could've sworn that John has covered the Sega Rally series, but I searched the DF channel and didn't see anything. Would be cool if he covers that series next! (Assuming he hasn't aready.) I'd be especially interested in his analysis of Sega Rally 2006, the obscure Japanese-exclusive PS2-exclusive that came out near the end of the system's life. Not to mention the bonus disc packaged with 2006 containing a near-perfect port of the original Sega Rally.
