This was the real issue with the PS5 Pro and its price point initially. Those of us already on PC who actually understood how games and upscaling worked knew this would be an issue for existing games. The GPU on paper was between a 6700 XT and 6800 with some extra bells and whistles and the CPU was basically untouched Zen 2 tech similar to a Ryzen 3700x. This is why we keep calling for better-optimized games. Game optimization can't always be fixed with new tech, it comes down to design choices made early in development and fixing problems along the way. Shoehorning upscaling on top of that was never going to fix the problem, as upscaling also comes at a performance cost. Now we expect developers that release a lot of these games in poor/ unplayable states to go back and rewrite code on 3 or 4-year-old games to get it to work with PSSR. After they have already moved on to the next game they're working on? Good luck with that.

Someone with dev knowledge on Resetera commented that it's possible that some of these problem games are exported using an older SDK which uses an earlier and worse version of PSSR that had a lot of these issues and that typically on the games he was working on (using the newest SDK) PSSR was typically much better than FSR/TSR. I think it's very likely there are some teething issues with early games not quite figuring out how to use PSSR correctly (and some just being straight up mistakes). DLSS also had issues early on. Considering there's a 20 minute long video of Alex railing against even the PC version of this game ala Jedi Survivor, and the original PS5 tech review notes a lot of it's own issues, it's likely a situation where the developers have pre-existing problems with a set it and forget it approach. The devs have also said they're already working on fixes, so it's clear they needed to do some optimization work within the framework they have available, but likely estimated the Pro enhanced label would be a good little sales boost during the system launch period, and that some stability improvements would be seen as acceptable. As far as UE5 goes, the Pro enhancement looks good on Fortnite. I'd imagine Silent Hill 2 might even be able to utilize PSSR better if the film grain could be disabled.

F1 2024 and Stellar Blade are also 3rd party games with great PSSR implementations. The driving force behind SH2's shimmer comes down to its RT implementation not PSSR which Tom also hammed up as sharper despite counting fixed 900p in performance mode and 1080p in quality mode while lambasting it all at the same time. Of course he also glossed over the fact that the game looks great in the 30 FPS quality mode with little in the way of shimmer despite ever frame only have 62,000 more pixels to work with than in the 60FPS performance mode. For reference, 62,000 pixel area is a lower resolution than 320x240 yet somehow all that shimmer is excised from the game when targeting 30FPS in 1080p. Strange.

We're simply discussing one of the most important features of the console, AI upscaling, and how like absolutely every single example of AI in everything, it will take time to develop. The problems are also on the developer side btw, not the console. There is nothing wrong with the console; just developers learning how to implement a new machine learning tool is all.

This was my first purchase off PSN for my new Pro. Absolutely shocked to go into the game seeing the obvious issues in IQ from the very opening section onwards. And it's listed as "Pro Enhanced" on the store which feels totally misleading. It's not just PSSR, there's broken specular highlights on shiny objects that result in bright white squares of pixels. It looks really bad constantly.
@VariantAEC3 сағат бұрын
It's not PSSR at all. It's the fact that they turned RT on in performance mode and are using the lowest sampling rate and resolution for RT. PSSR doesn't change the color of massive swaths of the image all at once. No AI upscaler does that, and for good reason, because they're not even modeled to do such things. DF doesn't know what they're talking about blaming PSSR for RT shimmer.
@drizzydragon3 сағат бұрын

@@VariantAEC Right so the shimmering must be the nanite which isnt ray tracing cause the flickering is still in the old performance mode.
@VariantAECСағат бұрын
@@drizzydragon The shimmering in the old version doesn't include obvious issues with RT and thusly doesn't cause dramatic bright and dark spots to appear in the image. Instead, the old shimmer is attributed to per pixel image break-up caused by Unreal's own temporal super resolution upscaling. The obvious difference is how fine the TSR break-up is and how it doesn't change how parts of the image are shaded. PSSR also can't change how parts of an image are shaded. Only RT can do that. Some of the shimmering of the older version of the game could also be due to poor ambient occlusion technique, but because that is also generated per pixel in traditional rasterization the shimmer will not paint large portions of the screen in different shades of light like a low resolution RT implementation generally can.

The GTA Trilogy was patched recently and it's much improved compared to when it released. It is fustrating though to see this problem repeating itself across other games and now a whole new console. Crazy how it's making certain games look worse, like in this case and Jedi Survivor (horrible there). I'd feel really cheated in my investment, thinking I was getting an all across the board upgrade with Pro, only to get all these blemishes. Question is, why are devs even releasing these Pro patches when they know it looks worse than the base product? "Hey, we got a Pro update! Behold...it looks worse. Just gonna have to deal with it."

Some games are good simply because they don't use PSSR at all: Horizon Zero Down Remaster Horizon Forbidden West... In many games, PSSR is somehow better, but the performance gain for the price is minimal or even negative: God of War Ragnarök Baldur's Gate 3 Fortnite Hogwarts Legacy The Last of Us Part 1 The Last of Us Part 2... Games where PSSR is bad: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Dragon's Dogma 2 Alan Wake 2 Silent Hill 2 Remake Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Call of Duty: Black Ops 6... This issue has to be called out differently, how can we have games like God of War, The Last of Us, Spiderman, Horizon Forbidden, and many other 3rd party games that also look and play amazing. All these games were all on PS4, looked better and were bigger than Silent Hill 2, and yet everyone keeps calling the issue "The PS5pro"... The issue here are the Developers, their engines, their games. If on PS4 we had better looking, more optimized games, how can an even stronger next gen console be struggling? Because is not the consoles, but the Devs, call them out and stop calling the issue "The PS5pro, The Xbox Series, The PS5, The PS4" it is not the consoles when soooo many games look and run way better 🤷🏻♂️. While on console it's entirely down to what the Dev's chooses and you have absolutely no say in the matter.
