And that just goes to show you that in the last erra we really were at a points where it was the games that were the bottleneck, not the hardware. World size, density, gameplay, npc interactions, everything is limited by the programmers, not the hardware. Now might be a sweet spot where these new forms of tech are pricy and OLED is now reasonably established to be more affordable (also then having better burn-in protection & brighter output than before) as long as you have a space where you can control the lighting as OLED can be a fair amount dimmer than LCD (reducing the light in the room/area then makes that not matter much, if at all.)

Loading times would be less for sure but without being a native ps5 app it will only do so much. As for the pop in, that is a hardware limitation so it depends if they allowed the game to scale up on ps5 with a ps4 disc or if its locked in like some games. As a PC "Gamer" for the past ten years I always assumed a rather snobbish position against consoles. What drove me to build a PC in the first place was when i had gotten an Xbox One. I wanted a PS4 but they were nowhere to be found at the time. So I settled with the inferior product, albeit the more expensive one. So, with my next gen hopes and dreams intact, i rushed home with my new console and i just couldnt wait to be apart of it - the next generation of gaming. I bought Battlefield 4 top go with it to really feel and see it and... it was the most underwhelming "next gen" experience i think anyone could ever have. I was so disappointed at the feeble 720p resolution and the low frame rate, even Black flag was in 720p. So, I sold the Xbox and used the money to help build my first PC, it was a very trying experience but I never looked back. Then the PS5 became more readily available last week. I just got one last week, they were available and i had the money so i thought "why not?" and... wow. I was not expecting THAT level of performance. It truly feels next gen and somehow just blows my current PC out of the water.

So maybe this is one part of *the recipe for a great launch: focus on just one ecosystem* (here it's PlayStation, CP2077 should have been PC only at first, Forza on XBox ...) and bring the other platforms a year or so later! When you go from 30 to 60, you're going from difficult to play to playable and enjoyable. When you go from 60 to 120, the difference is not as pronounced and not the same since 60 FPS is quite good. Sure 120 > 60, but the playability from 30 to 60 is vastly different. I would rather play a beautiful 4K/60 FPS game instead of 1080p/120. Hey guys at Digital Foundry, i would like a followup to this video because I run into a pretty strange situation. I get that this analysis is from the first area of the game (not to spoil) but I would like your analysis on the rest : mostly the largest area of the game (for differents scenes and loads) and crucibles. For Any who don't want to know or don't want to get spoild, don't read the rest of this comment. You have been warned ! Just to say : I play the game on standard PS5 with a 1080p/144hz/1 ms screen, digital version of the game. I only got one game running at a time on the console. I play the game in Performance mode rather than Resolution because I like smoothness over resolution (and I'm on a 1080p screen anyway). I played Horizon 2 for like 2 to 3 hours in the 2nd area (after the doors) then I went to the first long neck and to the first crucible in the games (Crucible Mu I think). At the top of the long neck : the game started to lose some frames but nothing less than 2 to 3 frames and it would pickup right after. Next to a big body of water : again, the game started to lose frames with everything going on in the scene (reflection of the water + enemies attacking) But the worst came to the Crucible : the game started to lose a big chunk of frames all the time i was in the crucible: and i'm talking playing in below 25 fps. The game would start to slowdown on the whole sequence since I entered the crucible : Horrifying. I tried switching to Resolution mode (since it's 30 fps locked) but it got even worst dipping below 20. I don't know what to blame : my PS5 unit, the fact that I played for long period of time or the fact that I never shutdown the PS5 or the game glitching or something... Nonetheless that was truly an horrifying experience for a game I really like so far. I don't know if anyone else encountered this situation but I don't see anything online on this so maybe you guys get to see this and try it for yourself. Anyway, I would like to see your analysis of the 2nd part of the game : maybe you will do that later (after everyone get a chance to experience the game to avoid spoilers I guess ?) but I do want your feedback on this because the first area didn't look that taxing on the system, but the later areas seem to be where the big workloads are. Best regards ! And lots of Kudos to Guerilla, when the game works, it's a gorgeous game !

At position 4:45 you see a shot with tree covered skyscapers. The PS5 is on the left in its performance mode (60FPS) stacked up next to the PS4 Pro (1800p) on the right. To me the stability of the picture from the PS4 Pro is noticeably higher. Look at the trees on top of the middle and right skyscaper and you'll notice a flickering in the PS5 footage while on the PS4 pro it's much more stable resulting in a sharper impression even tough both are supposed to be checkerboarded 1800p. And with double the framerate, I thought the result would be a sharper checkerboard image opposed to a 30FPS one. But here, it seems the 1800p 30 FPS image from the PS4 pro is clearly sharper than the 1800p 60 FPS image from the PS5. Yes, the LOD of the trees is different but I have seen other / better suited comparison shots in other videos where for example the near camera grass foilage is also causing flickering on PS5 performance mode whereas on PS4 Pro it's not flickering. I am really wondering why it is not the other way around: That the 60 FPS mode is looking sharper than the 30 FPS PS4 Pro. Usually this should be the case. But as far as I can tell by watching various comparison videos, it seems the PS4 Pro 30FPS 1800p checkerboard is clearly delivering a sharper experience when put it up next to the PS5's performance mode. In short it's like: 1800p CB in PS5 Perf mode = shimmering and flickering around foilage. 1800p CB on PS4 Pro = delivers a clearer and smoother foilage rendering.

@@jaroslavmrazek5752 thank you so much for confirming. I thought already am crazy or what as nobody is mentioning this. I think - just / only from watching youtube videos (I purchased HZD as PS4 disc 2 hours ago and am in the middle of a full 90+GB download onto PS5 - still 2 more hours to go before I can see it for real) - that maybe PS4 Pro is running in 1800p and PS5 PerfMode like 1600 ish. I wonder why Digital Foundry (or anybody else) did not notice this. What I heared tough is that without the day one patch the PerfMode runs in lower res than with day one patch. So maybe it's 1300ish without dayone patch and 1600ish with dayone patch. We have been told that CBR works better with higher framerates. You could see this easily on Horizon Zero Dawn where PS5 look a bit sharper than PS4 Pro (due to running 60 FPS instead of 30) - so my conclusion would be that either PS5 PerfMode of Forbidden West has to look better than PS4 Pro (which it does not) or that PS5 PerfMode runs with a lower res than PS4 Pro.

@holgerbahr89612 жыл бұрын
@@jaroslavmrazek5752 If you'll watch DF's video on the PS5 update for Horizon Zero Dawn, in it it's clearly stated that the checkerboard rendering is looking sharper and crisper on the PS5 compared to the PS4 Pro due to running with 60 FPS which helps because previous frame reconstruction proceess is being double as fast. So basically the checkerboarding process itself is getting a big boost as well. It's logical that this may increase image clarity. But now with Horizon Forbidden West it seems to being the opposite? Like the PS4 Pro is looking crisper / sharper and having less flicker on especially the foilage? Digital Foundry mentioned they like to step back from the pure "pixel counting" and are figuring out a way to rate "image clarity" instead. Which makes sense to me. But what I can see thus far with Horizon Forbidden West is the clearer image being on the 30 FPS checkerboard and not on the 60FPS checkerboard. Maybe one of the staff is looking into the comments and will dig a bit deeper into comparing the PS4 Pro vs. the PS5 PerfMode visual clarity. I think this is really interesting.

Really wish the performance mode was doing a better job up-scaling. I cannot understand how 1800p looks so bad?!? It's often hard to tell too much difference between 1800p and 2160p. But here it looks like a layer of vaseline was spread over the screen and makes it very hard to choose it over the crisp quality mode. Cyberpunk 2077 1.5 is running at 1440p (apparently) and looks FAR better than Forbidden West's 1800p performance mode?!
@mattyork76252 жыл бұрын
@Transistor Jump lots of other games using checkerboard rendering at lower resolutions don't look this bad. Demon's souls looks near native 4k running at 1440p. Even Valhalla's performance mode looks better than Forbidden Wests. Resolution mode looks like the best looking open world game I've ever seen and performance mode nearly looks last gen in comparison. Even checkboaring at 1800p should look WAY better than this. All the noise and jaggies especially in the distance are near unacceptable. You can just tell this game was made for 30fps and they slapped on the performance mode much later. It looks completely unfinished.
@mattyork76252 жыл бұрын
@Transistor Jump Yes, the Resolution mode in Demons Souls is 4k. Performance mode is not, it's 1440p. Are you talking about the recent patch (day 1 update) for Forbidden West is broken? I'm thinking they're gonna fix it (well, Performance mode) because something just isn't right with it.

I can't wait for the PC version now that I've seen, how well optimized even the base PS4 version is. They managed to decrease loading times AND improve FPS stability on PS4 versions even though you'd think they would worsen from HZD to HFW. Since they now have experience from optimizing the game from the start for two(/three if you count base PS4) systems at the same, PC version at launch shouldn't be as rocky as HZD was. Although I don't remember if Guerrilla themselves did the PC port or if it was outsourced to other company.

Like Halo Infinite, it's a cross-gen game. Infinite had to accommodate a lowest common denominator spec of vanilla Xbox One. HFW has to accommodate a baseline PS4. No matter how awesome your scalability is, you are anchored to the technical fact that the core experience MUST run on baseline last gen -- which inherently compromises best case complexity and performance.

Have you guys come across the shimmering/brightness issues? I am playing on PS5. Everytime I move the camera the environment changes brightness and shimmers. The game is beautiful but the shimmering/brightness issue is really distracting. When I turn off all sharpening settings on my sony 4k projector it is a little better but it is still there and noticable, especially on a 120inch screen. 30fps mode seems to suffer more from this issue then performance mode. Hope they patch this issue quickly.

Not sure if you guys at Digital Foundry noticed...but I noticed on my PS5 there was a setting to auto-load back into gameplay before the game had time to even show the tip card that happen during loading and fast travel screens. Basically it can load so quickly....the loading screen doesn't even have to to appear before the PS5 has loaded enough to continue back into gameplay. Nearly instantaneous sometimes so far in my experience. So I wonder if these guys saw that setting and switched it to automatically load without tip screen.

Anyone who can't spot the differences between ps4 and ps5 with just glimpses is blind or in denial. There is no comparison. Ps5 has significantly more memory for textures, higher resolution, and the cpu power for higher quality effects. If you are still on a ps4 now you are just in it for the game and not really hard up on the visuals. PS4Pro users are the ones who have spent additional money to improve visuals over the past several years while making their way to the ps5, and it is precisely why videos like these needs to be between the ps4pro and ps5 so we can judge if the visuals in games are at the level to make the financial jump now or can we wait?

@vampiszon66202 жыл бұрын
The fluidity of 60fps is much more valuable than bit more sharpnes, which you actually see only on still screens. Once you move the camera (and you are moving all the time) you loose all this sharpness for 30fps choppines. People say to me: "once you play 1h in 30fps your eyes will adopt to it". And I say to them: "once you play 5 minutes in 60fps, you will forget that it was only a bit sharper and you'll enjoy constant fluidity"

Thank you so very much for this comparison video. I've only got a basic PS4 and despite my love of the previous game, I had been on the fence about getting the sequel. What really sold me was the confirmation that even on obsolete hardware it still looks and runs better than HZD.... well, for the most part. I've noticed that sometimes, especially when mounted, the game can't quite load fast enough and will have to cut to a loading screen in the middle of the open world. This could happen very rarely in HZD too, but seems al lot more frequent in HFW. It's not so bad that it ruins the experience though, and I'm still glad I made the choice to get this game, even if I can't afford the latest hardware.

lol nope it doesn't work like that..even IF you use the ps4 pro with an SSD it will not be able to fully USE the speed of the SSD
@UniversalBuilder2 жыл бұрын
@@infrasonicrebasses4763 Cleary the game has to be coded with the SSD as a given, which is not the case on the PS4 Pro version. That being said, I don't see any pop-in issues. I see something lese that might be related to the SSD though : something, when I move really fast for whatever reason (speedy mount, jump from heights with the glide), I get a 1-2 seconds of black screen, like the rest of the system is trying to catch up where I am. But there's no graphical issues whatsoever like things not loading, when the screen comes back everything is fine.
