Ended up going for a build just like this as the parts are slowly trickling in. Watched the livestream as you upgraded but going with the EPYC 32C CPU and will throw in a Nvidia 3060 just for cloud game streaming to my steam deck. This should definitely be able to run a ton of my DevOps projects and fool around with Local LLMs for some AI RestAPI calls as well. Got tired of my Dell and being confined to their locked down processes and loud fans and will be using Proxmox to host all of my services. Thanks for sharing.

I like your build :D I'm doing something similar, consolidating 2 Older Xeon D-2100 Servers in my homelab and just purchased an EPYC 7313 & GB MZ32-AR1 and will be using an older SuperMicro CSE-836 I had lying around. Hoping it'll be the same or slightly lower on power, but I really needed more ram and PCIe Slots. Thanks for the insightful video!

Nice setup. I'm thinking about doing an unnecessary upgrade from my R720, but I want to stick with Dell for a variety of reasons. A Poweredge R7515 or R7525 would be amusing but well out of my budget for what I am doing with it.

While I love dell r 13 and 14 gen servers for home labbing, I would stay away from 15th gen epycs ( r7515 / r7525 ) as they vendor lock the CPUs once booted. For the cost of those cpus I'd rather go with a DIY build. Just my 2 cents

I always wonder how many people incorrectly set the fan to blow into the heat sink. You want the fan to suck air through the heat sink because laminar flow is better than trying to push turbulent air from the fan into the heat sink
@Cowayger

I do it too on mini itx systems. It just sucks to have warmed air being pushed into system instead of reverse.

I want to build something similar ( PC/Workstation ) with lots of PCIe lanes. What’s the Best affordable CPU/Motherboard combo ?
@DigitalSpaceport
@DigitalSpaceport 2 ай бұрын
Likely still this. Rome chipset is when you really got into great Gen4 lane speeds and I dont think there is anything cheaper in a workstation format. Dont go with a high core count like 64, the single core speed will stink. I think they have F class chips that hit 4 in the 32 and 48 core however. Depends on your workload if that works or not but it is my observed limit.

I came across a problem that for some reason the server boards Supermicro H12SSL 7763 percent, the EXTERNAL video card does not turn on, (I don’t know about your video) they rewrote the BIOS, and they couldn’t find why. We tried two AMD RX 7900XTX video cards, the video signal appeared several times. But when you reboot the PC, the board is immediately transferred to the internal video card. Maybe super micro specifically blocks cards from AMD. We also first tried with a GIGABYTE motherboard and the same thing. That is, it turns out that anyone who wants to build such a PC with AMD cards will not work!!! You will only need to buy NVIDEO, and it is not a fact that it will work with everyone.

@@bopal93 I think you will really enjoy it if you go EPYC you might consider the balance of the core count/cost/GHz better than I did. I eventually went with the 7B12 has a massive amount of cores, its not that great for desktop virtualization as it throttles up to only ~3.1GHz. In hindsight I wish I would have gotten a F optimized chip that could hit higher with fewer cores.

@@DigitalSpaceport I was thinking to get epyc 7313 (16 cores 32 threads) but due to availability issues the seller is offering a free upgrade to 7J13 (64 cores 128 threads) with the same price, which is wayyy more cpus than I need. Now I'm worried about that many cores consumption power unnecessarily. Do you think 7J13 is a good cpu?
@DigitalSpaceport
@DigitalSpaceport 9 ай бұрын
@bgk93 You are losing 200MHz in exchange for dramatically more cores and Milan was about 20% faster across parity sky's vs Rome. While I'm not sure if Milan is impacted by the same issue Rome has in 16core sky's, Rome for sure operates better in 4channel vs 8channel due to ccd issues. Milan doesn't idle as well as Rome however so it would be less energy efficient but not dramatically. If your workload has high dependency on single thread speed, I would consider that strongly at 3.5. Are you planning desktop virtualization is a good question. If so 3.5 might not feel right for a user experience.
