Digitised Herries Beattie collection launch event, Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka, University of Otago

This launch event was held on Thursday 6 June 2024 at the Hocken Library, Ōtepoti Dunedin.
The event celebrated the launch of the digitised Herries Beattie collection, a digitisation project undertaken by the Hocken Collections in collaboration with mana whenua and Ngāi Tahu Archives, and with the financial support of the University of Otago Alumni general fund.

James Herries Beattie (1881-1972) donated his papers to the Hocken Library between 1950 and 1960. The papers include notebooks, newspaper clipping books, correspondence, manuscripts, and ephemera. Beattie was a meticulous record-keeper, and his papers are a significant collection of information on the history of Otago and Southland, especially the traditions, place names and lifeways of South Island Māori. The Herries Beattie papers were recognised as nationally significant and placed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Aotearoa New Zealand Register in 2018.
