Welcome Gardeners! Today I am planting a gorgeous lemon tree in our orchard! Jason and I were going back and forth between a Meyer lemon and a Eureka lemon. We finally decided on the Eureka and I’m can’t wait to enjoy the harvest! Oh, and this video might end a little abruptly. There are just some things I don’t do well with in the garden!🪲 Enjoy!

Hi Janey, we always just call them Japanese Beetles (now I know the correct name). I live in Lakewood, CA, down the road from you in SoCal. They are disgusting, but I’m used to them now. First time I saw them was when we moved into our house harvesting Santa Rosa plums. Had a bag full and all of a sudden two flew out of the bag in my kitchen. Boy, did I scream and go running. Thankfully, my husband was home and got them. I was ready to move 😂. That was 43 years ago. Now I just swat them away with my hand when they get too close. I still hate them, but this grammy is tough. Ha ha. Have a great day. You just bring such joy into my life. 🌻

HOT TIP: When the first fruits start forming, sacrifice them by removing them from your lemon tree for the first 2-3 years. It’s really hard to be this disciplined, but it’s the best outcome for the tree. Doing this enables the tree to direct more energy and nutrients into developing a healthy root system and sturdier branch structure. This is worth doing on any young fruit tree. Also remember that all citrus trees are very “heavy” feeders! Feed them a complete citrus fertiliser twice a year, and give them a liquid seaweed feed every 2-3 weeks throughout the year - winter included. You can also use the seaweed as a foliar spray alternately too. One of the best fertilisers around is the humble blood & bone. Don’t forget to generously apply well-rotted cow manure around the base of all your fruit trees. It’s an excellent form of nutrition and they’ll love you for it by rewarding you with abundant crops. (Cow manure is great around rose bushes too!) Another tip: lemon trees have delicate surface roots, so use a light mulch around them which will allow their roots to breathe - if you can get hold of it sugar cane mulch is excellent, as is pea straw or lucern.

When I first moved to KY, I was sitting on my couch and noticed my cat playing with something. So I get up to see AND - SNAKE! Being a Big City gal I just about died. My cat kept swatting at it and it was rolled up. I ran got a pair of thick leather gloves and grabbed it by the head (like on TV) opened the door and tossed it. My cat was disappointed, I was trying to get a regular heart beat.

Fig beetles (Cotinis mutabilis), also known as figeater beetles or green fruit beetles, are a Southwestern species of beetle that careen through the air with the grace of a charging rhinoceros. They are loud, they are big (often around an inch long), and they are everywhere right now.

Hi Janey Those beatles remind it of lantern flies. When I say that I mean the clumsy flight pattern. When I first came across lantern flies a couple of years ago they amazed me how clumsy they are. I've seen them try to land on a wall and bounce right off. They have also flown right into my head and bounced off.😂😂😂 Anyway the garden is looking beautiful as always. And that zigzag planter is gorgeous❤❤❤

Be patient with the pomegranate! In our area I don't start testing for blocky shapes and curled in flower ends until close to Halloween. They sweeten up with the cooler temps. But they will crack if we get rain. So it's always a bit of a rain vs sweetness game. You can still eat them after they crack, but their shelf life is super short once they crack. Good luck being patient! 😆

Hi Janey-I’m in SoCal and had a big problem with Fig Eater grubs in my raised beds. I finally had to spray my beds with beneficial nematodes to cut the population. I only saw one beetle this year and was able to catch it with a butterfly net when it was on a zinnia. I’ve heard they are blind and had them bump into my house and get close to me-very disconcerting because they’re so big!

I had to share this … I watched your video when it came out out and being in San Diego area I knew exactly what beetle it was. Anyway today I was giving my front yard plants some extra love after the heat wave and some thing started buzzing around my head. I never see it but heard it and it would leave me. It landed in my hair. I dropped the hose and ran inside to see if my cat would get it from my hair. She didn’t 🤣. I was panicking. I pulled my hair out of the hair tie and had to comb it out with my fingers and flick it outside. I have never experienced that and had to laugh after you were being attacked by them the other day.

Planting higher is a great idea for drainage but also if you add annual mulch. ❤
