The most confident and helpful comments on the mystical context. Personally I doubt the Bible was very relevant as the 'Lives of the SInts' reflect whats is now called Creation Centered spirituality...ie as is described here as "Gods ability to manifest in the sea' and or deliver wood and signs etc.

If they had honoured the idea of poverty instead of collecting gold and bejewelled artefacts then there would have been nothing to attract the vikings. No sympathy.

The monks did sell all their belongings, gave it to the poor and lived a life of poverty and chastity. The Churches themselves were opulent and ordained in wealth and splendor - as was the arc of the covenant and the temple - as it is good and right to glorify God through beauty. Additionally, many wealthy men and aristocrats would patron churches and monasteries as a form of alms giving. The Christian Church never believed in bland and uninspiring churches.
