#Filmanter : Dil Se - Embracing The Other Side
Mani Ratnam's "Dil Se" packs a lot more context in its 2 hours and 43 minutes runtime than just the surface level love story it appears to be at first glance. The move is a political allegory depicting the power struggle at the behest of the 50th anniversary of Indian independence. Let's discuss why simply reducing it to an "unconventional love story" does great injustice to the thought-provoking piece of art that completes Ratnam's terrorism trilogy.

About Dil Se (Wiki):
Dil Se.. (lit. 'From the Heart..') is a 1998 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film written and directed by Mani Ratnam, and produced by Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma, and Shekhar Kapur. Set in the backdrop of Kashmir, the film stars Shahrukh Khan and Manisha Koirala, while Preity Zinta makes her film debut in a supporting role. Written by Ratnam and Tigmanshu Dhulia, the film is an example of parallel cinema and is noted as the final installment of Ratnam's thematic trilogy that consists of Roja (1992) and Bombay (1995). Though the film was shot mainly in Hindi-language, director Mani Ratnam also dubbed and released the film in Tamil and Malayalam in the title Uyire.. (lit. 'Darling..') which became very popular among Tamil-audience with its songs and in Telugu with the title Prematho. Shah Rukh Khan's Tamil dialogues were dubbed by Arvind Swamy in the film.
The film was screened at the Era New Horizons Film Festival and the Helsinki International Film Festival. Noted for its aspects nonlinear storytelling, the film won awards for cinematography, audiography, choreography, and music, among others. The film was a success overseas earning $975,000 in the United States and £537,930 in the United Kingdom, becoming the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts, and it was also a hit in Japan. The film won two National Film Awards and six Filmfare Awards, while also receiving a special mention at the Netpac Awards. The film's soundtrack album, composed by A. R. Rahman, sold six million units in India.

Acting of SRK is flawless. The scene in his engagement where he is so happy and suddenly Megna shows up and how his facial expressions change. Just magical.

Some people say i'm biased, cause I personally love SRK, but Dil se is my fav movie he's ever been in. It has many double meanings and with Amar being forceful and complicated - that's his character, he was supposed to be grey. It's not like it's hidden, it's a character and the movie didn't have happy ending, so i do not think it's glorifying any toxicity thanks for awesome video :)

That is a good point for his character, he don't have a happy ending. In some way he have what he deserves, not a happy ending.

Thank you for explaining this beautiful dichotomy. I have watched it around 100+ times since its release (Im not kidding) and I still learn something new when I watch it. It has aged very well also. You just have to surrender while watching it. It has never been an effort to do so for me, mainly because of Manisha's exceptional portrayal but I feel others, still struggle.

Farhad, I also share the same sentiment when it comes to any film in this trilogy. There’s always something new to learn everytime I watch them. I even mentioned this fact in my “5 Greatest trilogies” list. Take a look: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKK1qIKNfdqHnpI

#DilSe is an absolute masterpiece of a movie! It’s be fair to also say that this movie was symbolic of the country’s political atmosphere at that point in time. The love story itself was way ahead of its times. It’s a gem no matter who says what about the movie. This is my humble opinion!

Amar definitely was an inappropriate dude initially. He did stalk her and force himself on her. But the film's narrative is much bigger than that. Also there are real boys like that in our society. There is great depth in the screenplay and the acting performances. Writing and direction was very effective as well. The only two main characters were quite layered and intriguing especially Meghna. The supporting cast was superb as well. The most delightful part of the film is the music and the extraordinary dance sequences. Completely magical! Overall I think it was a great watch and loved the fact that it had guts to ask hot political questions which modern cinema hasn't been doing much.

Leaving aside my hatred for the main character. This film is great, I felt it very close because my country has gone through a period of horrible terrorism, where it was a nightmare to go out on the street because at any moment you could be shot or the car next to you could explode. Terrorism will never have justification, killing innocent people in the name of "good" will never have forgiveness. Every society has problems of theft, corruption, etc., as good people we must know how to educate our society and get ahead. The one who calls himself a "fighter for good" by killing innocent people is only the evil in disguise. PD: As always great video.
@Filmanter

I guess the film makes a point about how “terrorism” is subjective. From Amar’s perspective (the state perspective), separatist ideology is “terrorism”. But from Meghna’s persepctive (the oppressed perspective), the army enforcement is “terrorism”..

I'm scared that people will romanticize the character of Srk in this movie, he's a stalker who gets to touch the girl inappropriately. In this case I hate the SRK's character because he is a character with negative behavior that the director tries to show as positive. I haven't even come to hate Don because the director never tries to make you believe that Don is good, you know Don is bad and they show him to you as a negative character.
@xxShadowOfTheWolfxx
@xxShadowOfTheWolfxx 3 жыл бұрын
i do not think the director tries to make it as a positive. he just shows that they are both very grey, not really good characters. not all characters in romantic movies have to be perfect. and for the movie, i thought his character fit very well. but that's just my opinion :) i'm ofc not defending the character, i'm just saying that i love that he isn't in any way perfcet or even good. i love grey characters
@SD-eo8bx
@SD-eo8bx 3 жыл бұрын
@@xxShadowOfTheWolfxx To make a grey character you don't need to have the character harass someone, for example for a person to be someone average, you don't need to harass or commit some crime to not be perfect. But I respect your opinion.
@xxShadowOfTheWolfxx
@xxShadowOfTheWolfxx 3 жыл бұрын
@@SD-eo8bx i mean, harassing is very bad and wouldn't wish it on anybody really. but it makes for good and sad storyline. i think it made for some very powerful moments. In like KANK, you could say character very glorified, i don't think that's the case with Dil se. But i do understand your feeling, that kinda behaviour is not acceotable and it could make a bad infulence for let's say, kids, but i think it's also very mature subject and shouldn't be sell as a romantic movie really
@SD-eo8bx
@SD-eo8bx 3 жыл бұрын
@@xxShadowOfTheWolfxx I agree, someone as an adult can understand that SRK's character someone with bad behavior but sadly many kids no, that's also because the director don't sets the record straight with his character when it comes to his behavior with the female character. This is only rethought at the end, when both characters die, he for being someone negative (harassing someone is something that is very wrong, it is a crime) and her for belonging to terrorism. It could be said that both characters have in the end what their "deserved".

Meghna dropped subtle hints that maybe instead of completely rejecting Amar she thought maybe she could use him to fulfill her mission. Further she uses her female card to keep Amar at her favour. End was unexpected as we always think Hero will always save the day. Somehow we thought yes she finally met Amar amd somehow Amar will defuse amd save her and the attack. Further she might be sentenced for imprisonment and Amar may marry Pretty or another end could be Amar makes Meghna a govt witness and she gains immunity and they both marry completing the love story. Anyways Maniratnam chose that its better things end here. What happens after that is solely left to audience interpretation. Overall movie is too long for todays audience and movie takes its time to build the plots amd characters and their traits.
