Dilgo Yangsi Rinpoche - Be Careful of our Ego || Core Buddhist Teachings || Buddhist Masters
In Buddhism,
the concept of ego is often referred to as atta (Pali) or anatman (Sanskrit), which translates to "not-self." It differs from the Western concept of ego in some key ways.
Here's a breakdown of the Buddhist perspective on ego:
An Illusion of Self: Buddhism views the ego as an illusion, a mental construct that creates a false sense of separateness and permanence. We tend to identify with our thoughts, feelings, and experiences as if they define a fixed and unchanging "self."
The Five Aggregates: The Buddhist teachings describe our experience as arising from a combination of five ever-changing mental and physical processes called the khandhas (aggregates). These include:
1. Form (rupa)
2. Feeling (vedana)
3. Perception (sañña)
4. Mental formations (saṅkhāra)
5. Consciousness (viññana)
The ego mistakenly clings to these aggregates as a solid self, leading to suffering.
Impermanence: A core Buddhist principle is anicca (impermanence). Everything is constantly changing, including our thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. Clinging to a fixed ego that is constantly in flux leads to frustration and dissatisfaction.
The Path to Liberation: By recognizing the impermanent nature of the self and letting go of attachment to the ego, one can achieve liberation from suffering (dukkha). This is the goal of the Buddhist path.
