@@carlwilson5339 the most ironic thing is, Johnny Depp is a good deal older(he was) than Dillinger (31),but doesn't look it, while Warren Oates looked older(he was) than Dillinger, who after all, had just done 10 hard years for a petty robbery.

and he nailed DILLINGER, though Oates was a good deal older, JD was aged because of doing 10 years starting at age 19, so that slipped by the audience. great gangster film. and partly because of his resemblance to the man. he said earlier in his career, that he would like to play him. the first scene, where the idol/folk hero worship starts, as he announces who he is, w/ a smile, is my favorite scene. Richard Dreyfuss does a great job as Lester 'baby face Nelson' Gillis.

Warren Oates wasn't like Dillinger, based on what I read. He was a more cool, laid back character and not a loud mouth who constantly shouted, "I'M IMMORTAL! I'M JOHN DILLINGER!". Depp portrayed him more accurately. Warren Oates looked like him but didn't act like him. Great performances by the two leads though (Oates and Johnson).

yeah, and I can't see him working w/ Nelson, if he (Nelson) was as bad as it is said. Willie Sutton really was the best, because , aside from stealing a silo full of cash & jewelry, he saw to it that nobody was hurt (even a baby crying would cause him to abort a job), and in one such instance, he simultaneously noticed a huge sky lite in the ceiling, which he returned to, and burglarized the Bank, for one of his biggest profits (he was originally trained by 'Doc' Tate as a burglar, strictly breaking and entering). he had more brains than brawn, for sure. he even claimed that his Thompsons and .38's were never loaded, and nobody would challenge him on that, as Tommies were just too intimidating. he was quoted as saying "you can't rob banks on personality and charm alone." despite his non-violent inclinations, he was heavily armed, but was so non-violent that when he broke maximum security for the 3rd time, on the run for 5 years, cops would rule him out of being a suspect for robberies where violence was used ,even idle threats. he was after money, and nothing else. no bio-pics have been made on him 'cause of his aversion to violence, having never fired a round in a Bank. he and JD would've made the best Bank robbing team ever, 'cause they were thieves, not psychopaths. and they both loved baseball.

@@wolfganghasenmaier8350 in the book ,John Toland's 'the DILLINGER Days' the Indiana State Police make the newspapers believe he was the leader of the gang, but he was still learning the trade. they did it to create jealousy inside the gang. it didn't really help matters any. and because Banks were not popular, to say the least, he was seen as a man of the people. tho this was before FDIC, so (correct me if I'm wrong) the working man and the farmer lost any money they had in there. but folks would rather see it in JD's hands than the bank's.

Well, the optimist in me says that the person the gmen killed that night outside the theater was a decoy cleverly set up by JD and the real Dillinger got away. The people who knew the real JD & the cops knew he had "steel gray/blue" eyes & the man they gunned down that day had dark/brown eyes. (Can't change your eye color.) :P Unable to catch the real Dillinger, the gmen staged a cover-up. Anna Sage being deported anyway, after that night supports that theory in my eyes.

I have to disagree with you The actor who play Dillinger in this film did a terrible portrayal of John. it wasn’t accurate at all. It’s been told that John Dillinger was laidback and wasn’t loud mouth and didn’t shout like he’s some god “im immortal im John Dillinger. In Chicago in July there was a heat wave and it was 110 degrees that night. Dillinger wasn’t wearing a suit, it was way too hot for that. He look ridiculous. Melvin wasn’t the one who killed John, and Melvin was young not old. He did light up the cigar, he also never shouted John’s name. That’s also not how he was shot. Public enemies was very accurate and they also used the exact movie theater biograph. John Dillinger turned left when he exited the theater not right.

@@NC1195_ This movie is entertaining. It was made about six years after "Bonnie and Clyde", to entertain audiences at drive-in movie theaters. It is not a factual account. Also, it does not ever get to 110°F at night in Chicago. The actor, Warren Oates, bears a strong resemblance to Dillinger, and delivers a great performance. Other notable actors include Ben Johnson, Michelle Phillips, and Harry Dean Stanton. The movie was distributed by American International Pictures, a low budget (e.g. Corman) outlet.
