There is always someone who is close to the centered character (not necessarily the MC) that needs to be off-ed to create shock value, or motivation for said character. It's a cliche at best, but this short successfully embraced it with a brilliant setup. That's why I like it, together with the reason I mentioned in my first comment.

Can't we talk about the fact that L-1 tried to fight Zandik, too, and he's now regretting it ? As far as I know about Genshin's lore, Zandik is Dottore, and it sounds logical that he's just as dangerous as he is in the game. Nobody loses his sanity for nothing. Perhaps, as for Scara in the game (I know their situations are different), L-1 got caught by Zandik and used for experiment. Or he got defeated, and everything he loved and wanted to protect got destroyed as a "lesson" to learn him obedience. In any case, whatever is the truth, I can't blame or be mad at L-1 for now. There are too many things I still need to discover to fully understand his situation.

Morally grey characters are super interesting, and this series has set things up really well so far, I can't wait to see where it goes.

The way this story makes me want more is crazy. I had a feeling the cat was important to albedo when it randomly showed back up to be with klee. Im not saying it is the same one L1 brought back, but it looks the same, and mona seemed surprised seeing it as well. There are so many questions i want to ask, but i believe they will be answered in the next episode. Keep up the good work. I think Mona may have been an ordinary human once, but when she died or was critically injured and L-1 couldn't save her, he gave her over to Zandik who turned mona into a synthetic which would link into one of her previous lines in episode 3 "After you and Zandik took everything from me?"
