This is such a beautiful version of this song, which Dimash said he arranged in his mid-teens. It means a lot to him and he performs it in almost every concert, inviting the audience to join him and sing a little in his beloved Kazakh; he was overcome with emotion at the end here. Did you notice his in-ears weren’t working properly, so he had to perform without them? P.S. ‘Bastau’ means ‘beginning’ - it was his first big solo concert in his home country with 30 000 people from all over the world ...

👉 This is Dimash's big first solo concert in Aktobe called ‘Bastau/ Beginning, shortly after the show 'The Singer 2017'. This concert was given to him by his hometown as a welcome home and as a thank you for his huge success in China. 30. 000 people from all over the world took part. ADAI is popular in Kazakhstan and is composed by one of the greatest dombra players, the Kazakh folk musician and composer Kurmangazy Sagyrbayuly DAIDIDAU is a poem written in prison by Maghzhan Zhumabayev. Thanks to the great performance of Dimash Kudaibergen, Daididau is now the most famous Kazakh song in the world. (Dimash's stage costume is based on the traditional Kazakh coat, called Shapan.) The true story: The poet Maghzhan Zhumabayev was in prison in Leningrad (today Petersburg) and had just been informed that his wife had left him. This song was his answer. He named his wife Daididau (it could be derived from 'дедім айдай ау' - the moon-like one.) It was false information, a way to torture him and others arrested for conspiracy. Zhumabayev saw his wife again, but only for a short time. He was executed by the Stalin regime in 1938. The widow secretly collected all his poems. (They were banned until 1989). This song was first used in the Kazakh-Soviet film 'Shanyrak' directed by Edige Bolysbayev and thus became known and very important for the Kazakh people. A significant and emotional performance, for Dimash and audience. This song is a bit of a folk unofficial Anthem, based on a poem by famed poet and patriot; Magzhan Zhumabayev who was imprisoned by the Soviets and eventually executed. It is said the words came from a letter he wrote to his beloved [ Daididau ], whilst in prison. His jailers lied to him; said his wife had abandoned him and now had someone else, when in fact she had been ceaselessly travelling all over the country trying to find some way of gaining his release. He questions in anguish, over and over, 'Can this be true? Did you really leave me?' Magzhan died not knowing. Dimash conveys the storyline perfectly. Not a dry eye in the arena - including on stage.

Dimash has just dropped the Digital Show version of Omir Oter to his KZbin channel. I would love to see your reaction to that! It was so heart rending to see his emotional reaction to his first stadium sized concert in his own country. He always says that Kazakh men don't cry but I'm pretty sure that was tears running down his cheeks at the end of this song.

👉 The Dombra is a folk musical instrument widely used in Central Asia. It is made of wood and has a pear-shaped body with a long neck (only in Kazakhstan with frets) to which two gut strings are attached. The dombra can be rightly called the queen of Kazakh instruments since the XIX-th century. Dombra can be met in each yurta; it was referred to as one the most necessary and obligatory things in the life of Kazakhs. One of the greatest dombra players was the Kazakh folk musician and composer Kurmangazy Sagyrbayuly, who had a great influence on the development of Kazakh music culture, his musical composition 'ADAIi' is popular in Kazakhstan and abroad. Although Kazakh musical instruments resemble those belonging to other tribes of the Central Asian ethnic group, they have their peculiarities dictated by national traditions. Today the dombra is a national symbol of the Kazakhs and Dimash said every Kasacian child learns this instrument. In many legends the heroes of successfully made use the ability to 'communicate without words: 'In spite of his father's prohibition the khan's son secretly went hunting. He met a herd of kulans and wounded the leader. Infuriated, Lame Kulan killed the youth with a stroke of the hoof. After waiting in vain for the return of his son from hunting, the khan declared that anyone who approached him with that estirtu (bad news) would be executed by pouring molten lead into the mouth. No one dared for a long time until an old dombrist (a person who plays the dombra) attempted. The sorrowful tune of the kyui was able to send this tragic message across to the khan. He ordered that the molten lead be poured into the dombra. That was how the opening in the upper sounding board of this musical instrument came about.

The song is about the composition of Magzhan Zhumabayev, an exponent of Kazakh literature. When in 1928 he was sent to prison, and later sent to camps in North Karelia, Russia, Zuleikha his wife followed him, no matter where he was taken, she always found him and came to see him everywhere. She went to great lengths to get him released from prison in 1936, even asking the famous writer Maxim Gorky for help. During his prison term, Zhumabayev received the lying news that his wife had abandoned him, so Daididau was written as a lament for the lost love and suffering of the nation. But contrary to what he thought, outside his wife worked hard for his freedom and in 1934 his sentence was reduced and he returned to his home. Unfortunately, Magjan Jumabay was detained again in 1938 and executed on the 19th March of the same year. Dimash is a very proud Kazakh and this song is so special to him because is a traditional song and he dreamt about singing it before a large audience to show his culture and his country to the world. He was almost in tears. The instrumentation is beautiful, the dombra is the instrument he plays in the intro., every Kazakh has one in his home and Dimash’s grandfather is a master of dombra.
