Bangkok Voice Coach

Күн бұрын

Three of the world's greatest singers come together for a opera-style feast to celebrate Igor Krutoy!
William, the Bangkok Voice Coach navigates his way by ear through the post-Romantic key changes, reminiscent of Richard Strauss. There's a touch of Rachmaninov in the orchestration (Piano Concerto) and Dimash Kudairbergen proves there's literally nothing he can't sing to perfection.

Igor, what a genius.

Let me give you some info on this incredible trio and event: • Igor is there as an overall lead because the event is built for him: this is his birthday event that he organized with all his favorite artists, the ones that he is used to collaborate with and the songs he has composed • This is not the first time that Lara sings this song (composed by Igor) in trio but the third time: she performed in the original version with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Alina Yaroyava then again later with Dmitriy and Sumi Jo, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida. The song was composed from day one with her voice in mind. She has been collaborating with Igor for more than 10 years and he has told from her that she is “the best singer and the best songwriter he has ever worked with” • This also explains why the song does not exposes more of Dimash’s upper register: it was written for the late Dmitri who was a pure baryton. • Lara was very very sick that day, with fever and strong medication but she is skilled enough to have made it unnoticeable • Also, like Dimash, and even if the song was composed that way with her in mind, Lara does not sing in her real « comfort zone »: she is, as Aida, a lyrical soprano but here she plays the role in the trio of a mezzo-soprano and takes the median register. It requires a lot of voice control to not interfere with Aida’s high note and does not allow her to really shine. She gives room to Aida to do it instead and Aida uses this magnificently. • It was the first time Dimash met his idol Lara (he is a fan since he is a child and he covered several of her songs): look how quickly he turned to her, despite he has not finished his duo section with Aida 😂 And how he looks at her and hold her after it … • Lara is the most comfortable in italian because it is her first native language even before french: her mother is italian and while born in Belgium she spent her first 5 years in sicilia before returning there. She also is married to a sicilian man • Look how dimash slightly adapted his vibrato to better match Aida or Lara • Also there is a debate about the final note, held for such a long time, with the conductor looking at Igor and Igor smiling: Did they make a prank to the singers by extending this last note? Or did the singers instead played with them? I personnally think this is more option 1 😀 • I forgot to add that Lara has been classically trained for more than 10 years at Brussels Royal Conservatory and still continues to receive voice lessons on a daily basis. And she has sung many times opera pieces or with opera singers. • Final note to say that Lara Fabian wrote the song Your Love for Dimash

I adore Hvorostovsky ever since he stepped onto the stage in Cardiff and won the competition. A legend was born the night! I've now since seen the trio with him, Sumi Jo and Lara. I think Dimash is spectacular in this. I don't mind at all that it's not a high role for him.

I say Dimash hovers over Lara like a hawk. He adores her indeed. I have heard him say, "when you love someone, age does not matter. He may or may not have grown out of the adoration of her. I do not know, but I always thought he was saying that because of her.

While they were in rehearsal Aida joked that if she had to pop off for any reason Dimash could just take over her part. Dimash also became a bundle of nerves when one of the other key performers that night, Andrea Bocelli dragged him into his dressing room to sing for him just because he wanted to hear Dimash's voice. Both Lara and Andrea are childhood idols for Dimash, this event must be a much treasured memory for him.

Hi William,, great reaction again. Dimash probably has not only the largest and most complex voice but also the most perfect. I know some of his songs and he has never let me down - he has always surprised me. He is known and celebrated for his high notes. But when he only sings in a "normal" small range of his octaves, like here, it's good beyond measure. What can I say about Aida? I don't know that much about her yet. I have to change that. But everything I know is brilliantly sung. I also love the tone of her voice. And Lara? Just awesome. A genius in expressing feelings with the voice. Did you see how Dimash looked at Lara? He certainly adores her very much and was honored and happy to sing with her. You summed it up very well: three world-class voices. Many Thanks Greetings from Germany

Yay, that was a nice short wait 🥰 I do love the sound robust but liquid tones of Dimash in this one, it's very masculine. Lara brings her unmistakabe voice, which always remind me of dancing ribbons, artisticly floating about the air, just as how the rhythmic gymnast do it. Aida is as stunningly beautiful as she is talanted. Jaw dropping to observe her every move and phrase. A delight as aways, thanks so much. 💞🦌

One of the other dears can confirm.). I love this performance more so than either of the performances with Dimitri - I just have a preference for Dimash’s tone. Dimash is very versatile whenever he performs with others (he is the ultimate chameleon vocally). I love Sara and Bocelli in this song Sara, for me, is one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard and Dimash, Dimash is UNIQUE, the most beautiful and fantastic male voice, its nuances of tones and records without losing any quality is superb. I also love your reactions

It’s always a pleasure to watch you reacts and dissect Dimash’s performances. He has this spectacular ability to complement other singers and not overpower them when performing duets. Lara is Dimash’s idol since he was a child and he always dreamt of performing with her. She even wrote the song Your Love specifically for him (he’s wearing a red suit in that performance). Us Dears are waiting for a reaction for that song! Thank you again.. greetings from Dubai!

William, what surprised you so much is not just a skating rink.😂😉 VTB Arena Park is a multifunctional sports complex in Moscow, which includes two arenas: the Central Stadium (capacity up to 33,000 people) and the universal VTB Arena (capacity during concerts up to 15,000 people). A unique and very beautiful architectural structure unites two independent arenas under one roof. VTB Arena is the largest concert venue in Moscow in terms of modern technical equipment. The famous architect David Manika (leading bureau Manika Architecture) worked on the project. A special feature of the maestro's creative anniversary evening was the symbiosis of the arts. Igor Krutoy writes not only songs, but also instrumental works, which sounded organically that evening, merging with performances Olympic champions in figure skating.

Yes I was a little surprised when I saw the skating. I didn’t think Dimash, Lara & Aida was be singing to accompany ice skating! But it isn’t that. It is the coming together of art forms. Thanks for the background on the stadium. Is this filmed and shown on Russian TV?

I guess you don't have a twin brother, William, but that's what I first thought when I was at the opera in Oslo yesterday. It was right after the break where "you" appeared on stage. He was very much like you. The voice too. Had I not known you were in Thailand, I would have been sure it was you. I had to Google after the performance and found out that he was a British voice actor. But without make-up, he wasn't that similar after all.

Love your insights into the music for us William. Also really enjoy your personable, conversational way of speaking to your listeners. Dimash has so much talent, poise and confidence at such a young age to be able to carry his own with two such accomplished singers. Always performs Igor's music so artistically and it brings us more of the beautiful tones of Dimash's voice. Thank you William.

Aida is the best female voice to match Dimash. I wish he’d do more of the same. At any rate the title means I Love You This Way - a guy who has two loves and that’s the best he can give to each of his ladies. However, I do not think Igor Krutoy’s music is at all old fashioned. It is lyrical. He is a superb melodist and more akin to Mahler than Wagner. Or even similar to Puccini - because, like Mahler and Puccini, Krutoy can evoke emotions and pull at the heartstrings. I do not think that is old-fashioned. His music is sweeping and sometimes his music reminds me of Maurice Jarre’s lyrical and emotionally evoking, majestic, Lawrence of Arabia theme or the sweeping score of John Barry for Out of Africa. And all of that will never be old-fashioned. And at the end of it, Dimash is at his best when he performs Krutoy’s music and then Khazak songs and a film score or two (check out Endless Dimensions) Krutoy’s music is varied - from smooth jazz to ballads, to popera, to a modern cantatas Olimpico and even Stranger both of which he wrote for Dimash. Neither of those are old fashioned or romantic. Krutoy can write anything.

I do think Igor draws upon his love of older styles and deceased composers such as Puccini, Strauss, Mahler and even Carl Orff (Carmina Burana). That would make him 'old-fashioned' in my view with his nods to 100 year old music. However, I can see that seems like an insult, though it's not meant that way. I should just say 'traditional.' He has a style which is beautiful, elegant, at times anthemic, and always well-crafted. His signature certainly seems to be the shifting harmonies. Indeed, you so right, it's very much like film music, I agree. He's obviously very famous in Russia and the Ukraine, where he is from, and this late-Romantic style has a very broad appeal. Modern composers in the West write very atonal music. It's not so popular and often has a tiny audience. Even Benjamin Britten wasn't post-Romantic and Thomas Ades uses much more dissonant harmonies. There are no dissonances in Igor's music. I haven't found any yet!! That too makes it less 'modern' - but very lovely and people adore it.

@@BangkokVoiceCoach thanks for your response and for considering my comment. I appreciate it. Yes, the music of today is often more atonal than not. However, I view it as a style or genre of music composition. In years to come it will still be a style or genre. Will it then be old-fashioned? I think not. Genres of music exist side by side: classical, pop, jazz, etc. composers can choose to be lyrical or atonal, lyrical or pan-tonal like Schoenberg. Non of it is old-fashioned. It’s merely different genres. If you want to say that Igor Krutoy writes romantic music, that’s fine and correct. You may not find that appealing, but millions do - even outside Russia or Eastern Europe. Discovering him has been a joy for many in the west. As I said, he is a melodist and there is nothing wrong with that. I mean, even the huge comeback made by ABBA last year shows the popularity of Benny Andersson’s music - he has always infused classical and folk into his music - yet their albums and music remain perennially popular. Even heavy metal and rock musicians call Andersson a genius and symphony orchestras perform his music. They obviously do not consider that to be old fashioned. Music can be of different ages and genres, as I said. But never old-fashioned. In fact, with people used to hearing modern “atonal” music, lyrical or romantic or classical music, even some medieval music, may be NEW discoveries to be enjoyed. Which millions do. Look at what The 3 Tenors did for opera! It’s from there that so many people became accepting of classical singing and music. Younger tenors like Andrea Bocelli emerged, still hugely popular; and people young and old, from around the world, literally from 8 to 80 flocking to the fabulous IL Volo singing trio, who with already developed masculine voices at the ages of 13 and 14 burst onto the international scene a year later (thanks to fantastic management and marketing foresight) and have remained humungously popular 12 years later. Their voices are all encompassing, their songs range from pure opera arias to past hits to crossover to a couple of their own big hits, one of them winning the San Remo Song Festival and making a mark in Eurovision Song Contest. Yet the majority of their music you might consider old-fashioned. Regardless, they appeal to millions the world over. Not just in Italy. And they tour America regularly. Just saying. Btw, I am aware of Orff and in fact, do think that Krutoy’s Olimpico definitely has elements of Carmina Burana in it. So what? Multiple Oscar winners like John Williams, Bernard Hermann, and others always borrowed from the classics - in fact Williams’s detractors accuse him of “cheating” for doing that so much. No one though ever called him old-fashioned. Sorry to disagree with your descriptive of Krutoy’s music - he is in fact a better composer than John Williams or Alan Mencken and maybe was the East’s Burt Bacharach / Henry Mancini of the day - except, that unlike them, his music is still in the forefront today, his music is currently salient, while theirs will always be classically perennial. Thanks for your reaction overall though. I do appreciate your pointing out notes and keys of the singers - enjoy your Dimash ride! Keep on doing this - it’s great to find a knowledgeable and interested, yet calm, reactor for Dimash!

You mention the prayer: for me one of the best cover is from Lara and Michael Bolton (and David Foster at the piano!) kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5DCZ4N8eZaMe9k Again, in this case, this is an event for David Foster and he introduced Lara saying “when we first hear her, we couldn’t believe it. I’ve worked with the greatest but, trust me, she is top of the hip of the hip”. David and Lara are friends and he is the one that organized a diner with Lara and Barbra Streisand, her idol, as Barbra had been amazed by her rendition of Je suis malade and wanted to discuss the interpretation choices with Lara Lara covered a few songs of Barbra live (including insane cover of Yentl with songs chained in broadway mode kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIibnZSifbKqrs0 and an Evergreen version conducted by John Williams himself kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIXEYoCahbNgf9E) and Barbra returned the favor, covering Lara’s masterpiece Broken Vow (not recorded unfortunately, but here is the original kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXuleHZ_bcaGe5Y from Lara made famous in the US by Josh Groban)

@@BangkokVoiceCoach great great voice but if you ask me very poor performer, poor emotions conveyer. You can check this duet and you will see the difference with Lara. But as a Fan of Lara, I credit Michael for the kind words he had about her: “Besides being an absolutely beautiful woman and one of the warmest most sincere woman I have ever meet, Lara had been blessed with a phenomenal voice and spirit that makes her clearly one of the wonders of the world. She sings from the deepest part of her heart with divine tones, and whenever she wants such power, she takes flight and elevates everyone watching and listening. Seal and I snuck up to the side of the stage to watch her sing “Caruso”, and were both blown away, as was the audience”
