Thank you for your reaction. Dimash made this arrangement when he was 15. You can see what this song means to him. When he sang it in NY, when the audience joined in, it was as if the combined voices fed his soul. The look on his face was so special.

I believe this is based on a true story of a man imprisoned for his politics. Cruelly, he was told his wife (Daidedau) had left him. Which was not true, People from all the countries have learnt a few words of this song to sing along at concerts and it gives Dimash a thrill to present his Kazakh songs to the world.

The story of Daididau: This was written by a dissident Kazakh poet, Magzahn Zumabayev, during the Stalinist repression in the 1930s. He was arrested and imprisoned and told that his wife Daididau has deserted him. This is his lament to his wife who he thought had left him. She was waiting for him when he was released. It was a lie to make him suffer. He was arrested a year later and executed.

When he did this song in New York he talked about his dream of singing it on a big stage in New York in front of fans from all over the world and that is exactly what happened. The international crowd did our best to sing in Kazakh with him and he was so moved there were tears in his eyes. The fan cams catch it up close and personal and I can tell you it was the highlight of the entire evening to see him so moved. True to his nature he got on his knees and bowed to us the audience.

This song is based on a letter written by the Kazakh poet, teacher and political activist/prisoner Magzhan Zhumabayev. While incarcerated, he was told by prison guards his wife (Daididau) had left him as a means to torture him. Dimash honors him, and his Kazakh history, with this performance.

When Dimash was younger he participated in a singing competition. In round 2 of the competition he wanted to sing Daididau but the organizers wanted him to sing another song. Dimash was stubborn and replied: Either I sing Daididau or I quit the competition. Well, he sang Daididau and won the competition.

The story of this song is very sad. The song was written by the famous Kazakh poet, educator, translator Magzhan Zhumabaev. In the 30-40s of the last century, he was slandered and he was repressed twice. At that time of troubles, the entire Kazakh intelligentsia was imprisoned and shot. These were difficult times for of the Kazakh people. When Magzhan was repressed for the second time, he was tortured a lot and he realized that he would not survive. Then in prison he wrote this touching song for his beautiful wife Zuleikha. This song occupies a special place in Dimash’s repertoire.

👉 ADAI is popular in Kazakhstan and is composed by one of the greatest dombra players, the Kazakh folk musician and composer Kurmangazy Sagyrbayuly (1823-1896). 👉 DAIDIDAU is a poem written in prison by Maghzhan Zhumabayev. Thanks to the great performance of Dimash Kudaibergen in 2017 (The Singer). Daididau is now the most famous Kazakh song in the world. (Dimash's stage costume is based on the traditional Kazakh coat, called Shapan.) The true story: The poet Maghzhan Zhumabayev was in prison in Stalingrad (now Petersburg/Russia) and had just been informed that his wife had left him. This song was his answer. He named his wife Daididau (it could be derived from 'дедім айдай ау' - the moon-like one.) It was false information, a way to torture him and others arrested for conspiracy. Also through Gorky's (a famous Russian writer) intercession, Zhumabayev was released. He saw his wife again, but only for a short time. He was executed by the Stalin regime in 1938. The widow secretly collected all his poems. (They were banned until 1989). This song was first used in the Kazakh-Soviet film 'Shanyrak' directed by Edige Bolysbayev and thus became known and very important for the Kazakh people. Here a video by Gloria Wu with the story behind this song - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoDWaKWho5hpgpI * Daididau - The Singer 2017 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGezdoiJbL-Gmbs * Daididau - Gakku 2017 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZXPd6qrq7p8mqM * Daididau - Bastau 2017 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJKXp2Rvh9VpmbM * Daididau - Arnau New York 2019 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5OVmp2HiM5qb8U * Daididau - Digital Concert 2021 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIW7equOhcqYabc * Dimash's first Solo Concert "Bastau" 2017 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqmQdXyLaZaFfa8 (Thanks to all Dears who helped to complete the information)

In case you are interested in the history of this song. This song is very sad and it tells about a very dark time in the history of Kazakhstan, not so long ago. To understand the song, I always advise to take the link from Gloria Wu’s channel as it shows the background story and also has English subtitles. The Kazakh poet and writer Magzhan Zumabayev was sentenced by the Russian regime to 10 years in prison for conspiracy in 1929 and imprisoned. While in custody there, he was falsely (probably more intentionally) told that his wife (her nickname was Daididau) had left him. If I am correctly informed he is said to have written the lines of the song in prison (as a letter to his wife), probably to express his deep sadness and despair over is. Although he was released in 1934, he was arrested again a few months later and was executed 1937. The lyrics of this song are so sad I could cry every time I hear it. It never leaves me unmoved. Even after hearing it so many times. I was at his concert in Düsseldorf and he sang this song with us Dears there too. This song is one he always performs in his concerts, plays the Dombra (a Kazakh folk instrument), and asks his Dears to sing along with him in his Kazakh language (he looks like a Kazakh Prince with his traditional clothing). Every Dear knows many of his lyrics in Kazakh and loves to sing his songs with him at his concerts. I find it incredibly impressive and wonderful how a single man manages to bring together so many people from meanwhile 150 different countries and continents with so many different views in politics or religion, with so many different languages in a common group and to celebrate peacefully together and to sing in his own language. You always can see how proud he is of his country and how happy and moved he is when the audience sings with him in his concerts🥰. Especially in this performance you can see how overwhelmed he is by his emotions. Another very emotional song is Daybreak also from The Singer competition. I already wrote it to your list but please🙏🙏🙏🙏 I highly recommend you watching the version with the story behind on the Gloria Wu channel first and then the one from his Bastau concert. It was the 8th performance of this competition. I don’t think there are copyright issues, because the videos on this channel are already edited and there are English subtitles. Believe me you will appreciate the Bastau version even more if you’ve seen The Singer version before. But if you know the background, the force with which the song hits you has a completely different dimension. This song tells a very sad but true story. You really have to watch this with subtitles. It’s really important to know what the song is about. So please react to The Singer version first🙏🙏🙏. In the Singer version he was so sick and had a severe sore throat and fever. He lost his voice the night before his performance of Daybreak. I heard him say in an interview that it was very painful throughout the song, that his throat feels like shredded glass but he didn’t want to disappoint the people who stand behind him and so he pulled himself together and went on stage. He got 5 injections from this doctor in the hospital. And the doctor told him not to sing high notes. You can see how concerned the other competitors were and they suffered with him. They knew he was not doing well and one of them even gave him a very expensive Chinese medicine from his own inventory. The problem was his busy schedule between the performances and he didn’t have enough time to recover. He made very good friends there and many friendships still exist today. After the performance he lost his voice again. It’s unbelievable how he always manages to convey emotions to such a degree. Though I think in this one particular version the emotions he shows are mostly concern about his voice keeping up with the song and the pain he must have been in doing it. The Bastau version (no sore throat) of Daybreak is phenomenal and mind-blowing. So emotional and heartbreaking. Maybe you can do both together. Many reactors do and so you can see the difference between this two performances. In both versions I always cry my eyes out. I don’t know why I have to cry more. Because of the story or the fact, that he was in such pain and performed anyway because he didn’t want to disappoint the audience. Both version were in the same year 2017. Daybreak The Singer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4mqd2qsnKqMgc0 Bastau version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJy9hX2ggdR3bJY What I love about the Chinese competitors is that they don’t behave like competitors. Everyone wishes everyone luck. Everyone watches the other’s performance. Clap, sing along. In my opinion, no one begrudges the success of another. They might not have taken Dimash seriously at first, but that quickly changed after SOS. Through ist honest, cheerful and open nature, he found friends very quickly. Contacts that still exist today. Especially to the guy with the glasses. Terri Lin. Greetings and love from Germany👋❤️

This was Dimash's first big concert in his homeland after coming from China. Before that, he already had many performances all over the country, but he always wanted to sing at such a big stage. Due to his patriotism and great success abroad, as well as his parents, who also have the status of cultural figures, the Ministry of Culture of Kazakhstan gave great support in organizing the concert. Dimash's fans from different countries of the world could be seen for the first time at this concert. This performance was very important for him, because he had sung this national song many times before and he always wanted to spread Kazakh culture to the world. As seen in the video, he could hardly hold back his tears at the end. The content of the song is about a Kazakh hero, a political prisoner who was separated from his love in prison. False news reached him that his beloved was leaving him. This letter, represented by the lyrics of this song, never reached her, nor did her beloved, who was punished with the death penalty.
