I don't quite get what a diminution is
@en-blanc-et-noir Жыл бұрын
HA! Alright :D, no problem! "Diminution" is the general term for figurative patterns that are applied to contrapuntal scaffoldings and common chord progressions to individualize them. As you might have noticed already a good part of my channel is about baroque improvisation: an improviser would learn, train and internalize such patterns by 1) transposisng them and 2) combining them with other building blocks (sort of "contextualization") to eventually become capable to pull it off on the spot in certain situations... Does this iluminate your question, Sir?

@@en-blanc-et-noir yeah, I think so. So, the diminutions are these figures and patterns that are mostly played by the right hand? Why are they called diminutions though, it sounds like they are "the small version" of something. Like they would be the opposite of an "expansion" or something like that, these are diminutions... Does that make sense?
@en-blanc-et-noir Жыл бұрын
yes…. they are called like that because they diminish bigger note values into groups of smaller ones. The term is already used in the Renaissance in a now famous treatise by Diego Ortiz on instrumental improvistion and now is some sort of standard vocabulary… so better get used to it🥳
