I put her on a pedestal, or how ever we spell it. Although I had a great mother (and didn't need an extra one), looking back on it, I sort of thought of Dinah Shore as a mother figure. Until she started hanging around with that Burt Reynolds guy. I was already into heavy jazz by that time, so that's that.

Well, there were two, but different idioms. I'm sure their their paths crossed and actually met each other. Everybody in show business for 30+ meets their contemporaies eventually. My old man turned me on to jazz from my beginning. This is why Anita O'Day and Dinah Washington (not nec. in that order) are my favorite jazz female singers. And I can't live without Kay Starr either, btw, I really cant.

Only a few minutes in. Beverly Sills? I listened to her on the radio for years, reporting from the Metropolitan Opera explaning plots and vocal iterations. My only hope is that the heroine of my (one and only) window into the operatic world does not let me down.

Of the great many versions of this song, my favorite remains Dinah’s original recording from when the song was new in the early 1940s.

It’s the great conductor Julius Rudel and the NY City Opera Orchestra. Not bad… This was the “Party Scene” from Der Fledermaus - tradition is that surprise “guests” entertain . This was Beverly Sills farewell gala upon her retiring from performing.
