It's super inspiring seeing someone who not just collects all these amazing and rare horns, but goes through the time and effort to both improve at playing on, as well as performing/recording with them. It proves that even the black sheep of instrument families can add so much to an ensemble with their unique tones and timbres.

Astounding job Doug Webb. Astounding display of instruments and talent in your multitude of performances. Exceptional job as well, for David Horner, who made the entire ensemble sing with clarity and audio creativity, finding a space in the mix for each part played.

Hey Doug. I love your work, but I was wondering if you could do videos on these odd one of a kind instruments, since there is barely any (or none) informational videos on the Webb(lol) about them. Like octavin, c basset horn, contrabass crumhorn, Db flute, Bb Piccolo clarinet(I would love that since that kalison is so rare!) and the others, its sad that theres nothing out there about them. Also maybe a video on sarrusophones and what reeds you use with each size of sarrusophone. Since Ive been wondering what reeds are best for each size.

I tried using bassoon reeds eventually I had someone make me several custom reeds for each ax

The Db flute is a Haynes from the 20s I think it doesn’t sound much different than a C flute I believe Haynes still made Db pics and flutes into the 40s.

Mike Vaccaro was my flute teacher in the summer of 1978 the year I graduated from college. I was basically a beginner on flute then and he was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. When we worked together in 1987 with Kenny Rogers I’m pretty sure he didn’t remember me.

Big fan of the sarrusophone, why isn't the idea of a brass bassoon still kicking around like it should be
@dougwebbmusic2300 Жыл бұрын
There have been metal bassoons made but Sarrusophones are very different sounding mostly due to the taper I think

@@dougwebbmusic2300Yeah, a sarrusophone has more in common with a sax than a bassoon. First overtones.

Mr Webb, may I suggest an addition to your collection? Medieval european bombardes are double reed instruments with a mouthpiece called "pirouette" ( also exists in double reed folk instruments in some other parts of the world), which allows one to rest the lips much further in, and let the reed freely play inside the mouth. This is generally seen as crass by oboists since it doesn't strictly require as much focus on embouchure, however - depending on how the reed is shaped - applying embouchure to that further point in the reed can allow the realisation of various levels of muting or "chewing" of the sound, meaning that in practice this setup can compensate for the lower dynamic range of double reeds compared to single reeds. Out of the many descendants of the medieval bombarde, only a few have kept that feature. One that has maintained it, and consistently makes use of its potential, is the northwest-italian piffero. Players whose style extensively uses such articulation include Stefano Valla, Marco Domenichetti and Stefano Faravelli.
