Capsize recovery test, this time from full turtle position.
Following some comments and challenges from you guys I went back to Rat Island and capsized Forager on the deep canal to allow her to fully turtle.
As the hollow mast tends to stop the boat from turtling I had to step on the mast and then on the gunwale to force a full 180 roll.
From then on...well, better watch the video! 😉

These videos on capsizing have been some of the most interesting videos I can think of in the last 6 months on KZbin. This has been true testing of a boat. Also the more I see the ease of which that boat takes off when given sail, the more I want to build one. She is a beautiful boat. Keep it up

Hi! The hollow mast helps a lot as soon as it reaches less than 140-130deg it just brings the boat to 90deg Please remember that my GIS was modified by me to have extra flotation chambers/seats and as such it behaves a bit different. 😉

I can't understand why anyone would have thought you could not right the boat from a full turtle. It's just such a simple procedure to right the boat, which you have shown.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. The more more side floatation and the wider the boat the harder it is to do it because one person's weight needs to be enough to sink the buoyancy tanks on one side of the boat. Obviously that was not a problem on my boat. And the hollow mast just helps bring her up as soon as it leaves the 180 position. All in all....I had a lot of fun!! 😁

Hi Ibrahim! The amount of water is a combination of the modifications + the method used to get the boat up right. By standing off of the daggerboard the side of the boat submerges a less when coming back up and a lot less water is left in the boat.

You went to all that trouble without mentioning some important points. Some of these have been already commented. When you get knocked down make sure you release the main sheet and jib sheet if so equipped. Point the bow into the wind. Make sure your dagger board is secured topside so it doesn't fall out. Additionally, if you have a centerboard boat do not stick your fingers in the centerboard slot lest at some point the center board retracts. A good way to loose some fingers. All small sailboat skippers should practice a capsize in controlled conditions.

Hi Rob! Thanks for the useful tips. I never intended for this to be a how-to video or a tutorial on righting a boat. I made the video to test if I could recover from a full 180 on my boat which is is a heavily modified GIS and has unique characteristics, in particular a LOT of extra floatation. 😉

Nicely done and a great boat for knocking about, with the minimum of expensive fittings and complexity. Also a good reminder that it’s usually better to right the boat to windward, unless one enjoys doing it twice. It’s the sort of thing that becomes so natural to long-time dinghy sailors that we forget to point it out to the less experienced until we notice they’re struggling. Cheers 😎👍🍻

I guess I haven't sailed that many different types of Dinghy, maybe 4 in total. Three of them had side tanks and all could be righted from full turtle by 1 person & all 3 were 2 person boats,12 - 14 foot. However, in wind they could only be righted by 1 person from the lee side. Leeward Drag on the sail prevents righting to windward but assists righting to leeward. This makes righting easier in wind. You have to be nimble, start by standing on the lee gunwale to sink it, then at the right time get onto the board before the sail comes out of the water & then leap over the gunwale to the windward side to cancel the righting momentum and wind forces on the rig, preventing it from capsizing again. I don't find this particularly difficult & I imagine that most experienced dinghy & skiff sailors wouldn't either.
@davidjames1692
@davidjames1692 3 жыл бұрын
Nicely done! With something like a laser sailboat the dagger board is strong enough to stand on it.. With plywood daggerboards (more fragile) I'd tie the main sheet to something strong, ideally in the center of the cockpit or the opposing gunnel/gunwale and haul on that (yours seems very strong). Hauling on the main will give you more leverage and you can move to the front or back of the boat which can help steer the boat into the wind. When trying to right the boat in high winds you'll have to swim the bow into the wind before righting.. really.. if you take too long and the chop or wind moves it off the wind.. back swimming and point the bow into the wind. Also make sure the main sheet is loose. If the boat rights in high winds pointed off the wind it will take off like a scalded cat before you can get back on board. As much as it sucks getting sucks swimming under water and loosening the main.. tying off a hauling sheet/rope... swimming the bow into the wind etc.. all in the waves and the wind, it's necessary. Good luck and have fun..
@TheBoatRambler

Thanks for the tips David! The GIS daggerboard is made of laminated strips of solid wood and fiberglassed all around. It will take my weight (74kg) with no problem. Still I tend not to stand on the very tip and, as I have discovered with all this testing, flipping it back up slowly leaves almost no water in the boat so the forces on the DB are really small. With a loose rudder the GIS will turn to wind almost immediately if the sail fills so hopefully I wont have to swim after her! I will eventually try capsizing in strong wind and heavy chop...😅

Hello from the sailboat rougarou south Louisiana.. you always amaze me with the speed that your boats go on their sail. I keep thinking is that real time or is the videos sped up. I've actually been following you for about 3 years maybe more.. found you by accident looking into Latin sales. I have a Hunte, and I have this curiosity can you put a Latin sail on modern sailboats. And what would the performance be. My little boat has a 32 ft Mass height from the water. And do a lot more than other sailboats like going under low bridges stuff like that. But I'm still restricted with my draft four and a half foot. Sometimes I'm a mile away from the beach and I'm on bottom. And there's always this little voice in the back of my head. Always dissecting other boats to make the perfect boat. But I know that I never be a perfect boat. Just maybe a damn good boat. Also I used to love flipping the boats when I was a kid. But looking at you flipping them boats back over. Reminds me of too much damn work. That's why I keep mine up right. I do love to run them with the rail in the water though. And when there's a Squall or a storm coming I'm taking the boat out.. I'm a nutcase I just love that thrill. Anyway love all your videos dude keep up the good work. It'll keep you out of trouble. Came over too late to Pontchartrain Friday night playing over here. Headed back to lake Barn tonight after little regrada this afternoon.

@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I can assure you the videos are in x1 speed!😂 Latin sail perform really well, they are just hard to reef and to handle unless you have crew. And the yard up top is a hazard if anything breaks due to it's weight. As for capsizing, believe me, other than for these tests I go the extra mile to keep my boat upright! I have never accidentally capsize...yet!!😅

Thank you. That was useful. As I started sailing in a mirror dinghy, which has very large side tanks, I didn't think you would have too much trouble recovering from fully inverted. What did surprise me was that your GIS didn't want to invert. I did wonder if putting a waterproof door on your forward locker would make her more stable when back upright as it would keep weight out of the narrow bow section. Just a thought.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Barry! The GIS has 126 liters of buoyancy at the bow. The open locker goes just as far as the back of the mast, then it's a big watertight chamber all the way to the bow. I usually put the spare life vests on that locker there too, to help in the event of a capsize. 😉 Bow 126 liters Mid seat 150 liters Back seat 270 liters Side seats 75 liters each These are approximate numbers from my 3D model. You just can't sink this boat!! 😁
