The Boat Rambler

Testing my homemade sailboat capsize recovery.
Tried capsizing my Goat Island Skiff 3 times and getting back aboard in different ways to see if it would make any difference.
Sailed her partially and fully swamped as well as bailing at the same time.
Not much wind that day but it was a good chance to get a feel for how she behaves after capsize.
I was actually quite surprised how she went with little wind and fully swamped!! A bit "tipsy" full of water but I still managed to tack and gibe!

Another good video, well done! In Okinawa, with the sailing canoe called Sabani, they have a race where all sail out to one point and then purposefully capsize, then right the boat, bail out and race back to the shore. It is good training for capsizing later in the open sea where mistakes should not be made... and buckets of fun. Thanks!

Thanks Bill. I have made 3 videos last season with a lot more capsize action, including a full turtle capsize, to test the new watertight side benches. And they proved to be a game changer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKDCqJKQh5WDqaM kzbin.info/www/bejne/joDCiqqLicxlsKs kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKeTdWlthqmEhac

@@TheBoatRambler I risk writing too much, sorry, but... the Okinawa sabani shark fishermen used to fish offshore with these junk rigged wooden canoes in any weather. If a storm came they simply capsized the boats on purpose and then go underneath and hold onto the seats in the air pocket until the storm finishes. Tough guys over there :-)

Great work Teo. You’re putting together a really impressive resource, thanks. The vids are the perfect compliment to the plans and continue to take it further. The boat looks pretty forgiving and robust too as you clamber all over (not a surprise as we’ve seen how well you built it).

I am considering building a GIS. But the flat bottom concerns me, as I have heard such boats do tip over rather easily. I know you are trying to tip it, but it does seem rather easy to do, even in a mild breeze.

Any advantage in having a Whale diaphragm pump or Anderson type bailers? It seems you can get sufficient speed out of her for the self-bailers to function. Great video, thanks.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg! I don't know if the bailers would work. I believe I read a post by a GIS owner saying he still needs to bail out some water before they start to work. As for the pump, some of the guys have built a simple watertight box with battery inside powering a small bilge pump. They just keep it under the mid seat out of the way. Me, I'm still trying to decide what to do on my GIS... 🤔

Try a recovery with a sea running. No one ever seems to do capsize/recovery drills with a sea running.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for your feedback. I think ppl don't usually do this drill in rough seas because if it goes wrong it might be dangerous or even life threatening. Like I said in the video I'm curious to see how it behaves in rough weather but I will only try it if I get someone on a boat watching and in standby to rescue me if needed. Trying in a controlled situation is one thing, trying without a safety net is another...😉

Why don't you like those automatic bailers on the bottom of the hull? Won't those work on your boat?
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 9 ай бұрын
Hi, they do work, specially now that I have built side tanks on the boat. The selfbailers have a tendency to let water in after a while and the GIS is mostly a really dry boat so I don't want any water ingress when I'm sailing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKDCqJKQh5WDqaM

Perhaps a higher sealed sole (floor) like a surf rescue boat? Auto bailing feature.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael! A raised floor could work but the rear seat/tank could create some difficulties in the construction.

Would the boat have turtled if left on it's side long enough? Does the mast and boom have enough flotation to prevent it from turtling? An idea for you: something I've done on close to a dozen boats now, is cut a foot hole in the rudder to provide an easier way to get back in the boat. The holes are streamlined in thicker rudders, and have thick wall vinyl tubing on the bottom on thin, metal ones.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. The mast is hollow box construction, the yard and boom are carbon and they are all hollow and watertight. I'm convinced that it will not turtle... but next time i capsize I will try to stand on the mast progressively further away from the hull and see how it behaves. 🤔
@markkurtis8637
@markkurtis8637 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheBoatRambler do this turtle test with another recovery boat near by. If the mast fills, you may not be able to get it righted by yourself. You're not that big of a guy.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
@Mark Kurtis I had a word with some ppl on the island and they were ready to save me if needed! Now seriously, all spars including the mast are hollow and 100% watertight! Even with the boat on its side and me seating on top for a few minutes it didn't look like it wanted to fully turtle. Next time I'll walk on the mast to see what happens!

great video but you do not have bailers???
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Frenchie! My boat has no self bailers. Actually most GIS don't have them, and in my case I would need some aft and some forward of the mid seat as it is watertight and there are no limber holes connecting those two areas.

Why
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Luke! If I didn't capsize the boat intentionally then I would never know how it behaved or how low it would float etc. Practicing in controlled conditions is always better than finding out the hard way. 😉
