Holy hell that must have been scary. You guys are lucky lads that there were people close by. Skipper on that fishing boat was super professional...had a plan, communicated his plan well and cool as a cucumber. Sorry about your RHIB. That was hard to watch. As they say, any day above ground is a good day.

I totally understand. The batteries should have and did charge up the batteries right away as the big motor was putting out 50+ amps. We didn't have an issue when we headed out of the anchorage or even most of the way across. We had only killed the batteries earlier in the day because when we swapped gas tanks, we used the batteries up trying to start the engine and solve an air lock in the fuel system. Driving at night was my decision as the captain. I am still happy with my decision and I was taking into consideration way more variables than shown in the video. I believe I was not in a safe anchorage due to the weather that was on route early the next morning and was there to stay. I have navigated at night a lot and it is something that I am more comfortable doing than many other boaters. We ended up with a fuel issue that stopped us. The batteries were doing fine and were still running the lights and gear until it was tied up at the dock.
@idreamofdinghy10 ай бұрын
I just replied to the above comment. You're correct, it was that type of decision. We are ok and will rebuild here back to life!
@MAMarco-fg2qx10 ай бұрын
Hey puffy panda, watch the video again A couple of key moments you missed. Anyone with any expierincce knows that in conditions like this you dont try to throw a towline to the assisting vessel. The assisting vessel will belay the towline out and let it drift down wind tto the vessel to be towed. you can cleaarly hear him asking if the assiting vessel had a towline ready and his intention to attach his bowline which is all ready to go. The weather although bad was not outside the operational window of this vessel. You can see coaast guard does show up in the same boat !! The go no go decision was questionable but considering the expierience on board and the short duration of the trip and the vessels capability............ hmm i probably would have gone as well. Generally speaking the captain of the assisting vessel calls the shots. You can refuse assitance but once the tow has comenced yo are simply along for the ride. So puffy panda sorry to deflate you like an infatable front yard christmas decoraion in august but................

I’m not disputing that the fishing boat captain knew what he was doing. Watch the video and you’ll see that he asks his friend to get the green rope out the bucket at the back things he could’ve done before he set off. The boat is well capable for that weather? with problem engines, I don’t think so he’s got three engines. two of them are not suitable in that weather. and the other one was totally unreliable.. look forward to seeing what the problem with the engines were wouldn’t be surprised if it was water in the fuel fuel at the sea and in the rain is never a good idea. Setting off in weather like that from a safe Anchorage in the dark. but then again, you’re the expert, I’m not an expert I do have a boat and I do go out in not the best of weather but generally never at night. and I keep on top of my own engines. I hope you do the same. Thank you for your comment. Look forward to seeing you on the water.

Hopefully when you rebuild it better than new you'll have some additional backup systems. Is there a better design or brand of engine for your type of coastal surf usage? I do recall that it used a while lot of oil on the trip to Mexico.
@idreamofdinghy9 ай бұрын
Hello Guys :) Yes that E-Tech was a guzzler on oil. I kept thinking that it would be cheaper to finance a motor then pay for the oil. lol I am currently thinking Merc 225hp twins. Then I will have two motors and a small spare dinghy motor.

Glad you are guys are ok. Why did it list so badly and then pull the cabin, was the rope too tight to the fishing boat? Couldn't really see the engine get smashed but will wait for the video. In the old days when the battery failed, we could pull start our 110HP Mercury outboard is that not possible with today's engines?
@idreamofdinghy10 ай бұрын
The list and breakage was from towing the boat from the roof rack sideways. We started going faster and faster and it started to fill sideways with water. We did have a tow line that was still attached to the bow but the line chafed on the fish boat side door. The ship went back and tied the line to the rack. We can't pull start that motor, I don't think. Its to big. But we can hook the jump starter directly to the motor starter under the hood. That sometimes helps get around any electrical issues on the boat itself.

@@idreamofdinghy Got it. Sucks for sure but glad you guys were ok and it could have been way worst. Shout out to the fishing boat and that Captain. Also the Canadian Coast Guard, from Victoria radio to the Zodiak and crew that came, nice to know it's there and works so well if we ever need it.

What a shame poor Oby one Kono be. However, she lived a great awesome adventurous short life. That Dinghy was put through one hell a lot of shit conditions. I was extremely surprised she made it down to Mexico. Most likely you had put more miles on her than anyone else had put miles on a dinghy similar. I don't think the Canadian coast guard put as many miles on their dinghies. As you were a Coast guard you'd know. Darryl did you ask Torri if he knew that fisherman on side door of boat during your rescue? What was Torri's answer? Now I see why you are doing what you are doing because this dinghy is no more. From the photos from few days ago on Instagram. Darryl and Torrii another awesome video.
@idreamofdinghy10 ай бұрын
Adventurous shot life indeed! I agree. I did 5500 miles in the last 10 months! So that's a long distance for a dinghy :) Yes! Tory knows the fisherman at the side door. They worked together on another commercial vessel in the past. Small world! Correct! The new build is starting because of this damage... But I am so excited for the next steps!

Incredibly sorry about the boat and the trauma you went through yourself and your friend, you tell us that you used to work for the Coast Guard. you need to look back at your decision to go at night when you need lights and engines running. why on earth did you go at night? how come you didn’t have a bow line attached ready for a tow. at the end you can see the rescue boat is towing it with the line attached at the right place. There should be no reason why you didn’t have that line ready to go. Before you left, you knew you had problems.? The damage to the boat was caused purely because you did not have the towline set up. The fishing captains decision to rescue you off. The boat was the best decision.. all the fuck ups are down to you sad to say but true.

I would think about two 150s four strokes on the boat next separate batteries, separate tanks, try to avoid carrying vast amounts of fuel on deck refuelling in the rain or at sea is never a good idea. A small kicker engine may seem a good idea but not when the weather gets bad.
