Also, Do not cleat your jacklines to the rear most cleat. If you go over you will be dragged behind the boat just out of reach and you will drown. This lesson came out of the 1998 Double Handed Faralones Race in the Ocean of the Coast of San Francisco when out club (SSS) treasurer Harvey Shlasky lost his life because of this. Tie off or cleat you jackline in a way that if you go over you will be dragged along side of the cockpit. Not behind the boat.

There is no safe way to tow a dinghy on the ocean. There's only dangerous and more dangerous.

Yeah, but some of us still do it, anyway. I've towed my 11' Whaler from Mississippi to the Bahamas and back, twice, with zero issues. But, I don't rush weather windows, I just wait on them.

OK what happens when you get a trade wind squall with 4 inches of rain in 1 minute!!! Towing dinghies at sea is not a very clever idea for anything more than a 2 hour coateal journey
