Good evening! And thank you so much for helping us to over 9,500 subscribers! I'm really excited by all the support we've had on the channel over the last year, and this evening we've got another fascinating walk from high up in the Scottish Highlands :) Dingwall is a town full of stories, but one we didn't have time to mention on our walk was that of Hector Macdonald, or 'Fighting Mac', remembered atop the memorial on Mitchell Hill. Born and raised in the Black Isle, Macdonald joined the army at the age of 17, where he rose through the ranks on tours around the world, but became most famous for his bravery in the Second Boer War in South Africa. This elevated Macdonald to hero status, but just a few years later, he was accused of homosexuality, and committed suicide after the allegations. Despite the controversy of this at the time, over 30,000 people turned out for his funeral, and the Major-General is still fondly remembered and celebrated in Dingwall to this day!

Bonjour à vous tous Scottish friends. Super interesting video and it's a mountain of memories for me. Thanks for the agréable and good work. Landscapes of Highlands are wonderful. I know your country for 1977 because I was worker on building Ninian rig to Kishorn. Today I have a friend here he lives near station. Because of Covid I can't spend a lot of time since 2020. I hope to come and visit Lewis and Stornoway with my motor home. I would like find some people around 70 years old for correspondence by internet. Scottishs, I love your country and think you are lucky. Tkanks for answers. Friendly. Christian

I agree! It's one of the largest towns in the Highlands, but even so it has a very intimate and quaint feel that makes it a delight to walk around and explore :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some nice memories :)

When they played in Coventry at The Hippodrome, around that time, I paid 6s:6d (6 shillings and sixpence). They were wonderful!
@LetsWalkUK2 жыл бұрын
I wonder too! As Gillian mentions though, six shillings and sixpence sounds like a bargain to see The Beatles right at the beginning of their career :) Thanks to you both for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!

I really enjoyed the tour around Dingwall, such a unique a attractive town. Unbelievable to the think the Beatles played to such a small audience, what a treat for the locals. Thank you for all the interesting history and I look forward to the next video. Also do you know how many miles you've travelled in the last year? You must have covered a huge distance.
@LetsWalkUK2 жыл бұрын
Ha ha the story of The Beatles certainly is a great one! Dingwallians do like to bring it up - and for good reason :) But it's just one example of the town's amazing local history! As for how many miles I've travelled in the last year - I really don't know! I know on this day in particular I covered more than 160 miles, travelling from Thurso all the way down to Fort William, and with a number of other days like that I'm sure we're well, well over 1,000 miles this year :) Thank you so much for watching and for your support - do stay tuned for more walks in future!

Thank you so much for this. We've been to Dingwall quite a few times staying at the campsite next to the football ground. Had a few good meals in The Mallard too. It's a lovely place, and really nice to hear its history. Hector Mac is an amazing character. Definitely larger than life. Thanks once again for these brilliant videos.❤

Had a week in Strathpeffer in March 2015 and while exploring the area drove through Dingwall several times though never actually stopped there. In our dozen holidays in Scotland over the last 9 years we have got to know the A9 better than the A1, we’re great fans of the West Coast, stunning scenery.
@LetsWalkUK2 жыл бұрын
Ha ha ha the A9 certainly has some of the most spectacular scenery in the country - and the many towns and villages that line the road are just so full of history too :) I've not been to Strathpeffer myself before - perhaps that's a place for me to stop off on my next trip up to the Far North... Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!

I loved this video! I've stayed at nearby Muir of Ord a few times and have visited Dingwall on maybe 5 or 6 occasions to collect lunch on the way out to explore the area. Therefore I remember the bakery called Dea's very well. They have another bakery a few doors up which is equally as good. It's also called Dea's!

I think it was rather warm! Although 'warm' up in the Highlands can mean something very different to the rest of the world. It was certainly over 15C on this day as far as I remember :)
