Dining 101 etiquette for the Blind and Visually Impaired! 👩‍🦯🍽🥤

Sharing with you an intro on how to describe fod on the table to a blind or visually impaired person. At home, restaurant, work or anywhere where you have contact with a blind person and you are serving food you ight one to use these strategies.

Blind with a vision,I am legally blind with limited vision and I use a white cane.I have never had problems with waiters in restaurants but the menus are hard for me to see and read it and I just recently got a lighted 4x magnifier from the cnib and it works really well for me when I pick out what I am going to order

Hi Kim, thanks so glad for visiting Blind With A Vision where we always have a vision! 😣 I am so glad to hear that you are using your cane and getting all those accessible gadgets that help us to always keep moving beyond limitations. It takes us a while to reach that point where we will start using the white cane, but when we discover that this could be the way to go out there is a great feeling. It just gets easier and easier and then you just stopp feeling embarrassed to make those blind mistakes. We are not able to see 20/20 so it is more than normal to ask for help if we need to do so. I always say that going to a restaurant is the perfect place to practice. They will usually help if you are not able to read everything and you will enjoy a delicious meal to feel better LOL. Honestly, this becomes an addiction and you can read, get on facebook or just relax and you don’t even need anyone with you. The fear of getting lost, making mistakes and not being able to see goes away. Adpating, adapting and more adpating is what has helped the world to survive in any environment or change. We do not want to be blind but we adpat and keep living. Sending you lots of hugs 😣 😘

When I was a little kid I remember using a little silver ring that was clamped to the plate but I can't remember the name of that device do you know the name of it? Could you please make a video about different devices that blind people can use to help them eat both physical and tech?

I use this clock method too, as it is a little more precise than north, south, etc. The clock just seems to natural to me. I also use it when out walking.

I love dining out alone once a week. I'm also visually impaired, but i have some useable vision. Whenever i go to a restaurant, what i like to do is bring my hand held magnifier in order to go through the menus.

I tend to go to restaurants I'm familiar with. I know what they have and I get good service. I generally just get seated and cut to the chase, "Please bring me a..." Lots of restaurants have braille menus, but most family restaurants like Denneys or Sharis have similar items, chef salad, burgers, club sanweitches, stake and potatoes. I just wish they'd cut the lettuce smaller so I don't wind up with salad dressing all over my cheek by getting a lettuce leaf that's too big. I ask for the dressing on the side and tear up the lettuce. I'd rather have someone see me do that than slop dressing all over my chin.

Most of the restaurants were I live do NOT have Braille menus. In fact, if I ask for one, most of the time, they don't even know what that is! Now I know that fast food joints are supposed to have Braille menus. But to find it, they've lost it, they dno't know where it is, oh lord, it's shameful!

That's true, that happens all the time with those fancy salads!! I do the same and ask for things on the side and I check the restaurant online to check the menu and don't deal with the menu...I don't think the Braille menus they have at some restaurants are updated, so it's better to go online and why not, ask for your steak to be cut in small pieces or your lettuce!! greetings from Southern California!!

Thanks sooo much! too bad KZbin only advertises funny and silly videos, but not educational and helpful clips?????? If we have a very simple KZbin channel on the reality we live we don’t get views. One, because people do not like seeing things related to the disability and two, KZbin doesn’t get money for videos like these so you don’t get promoted.

Yes, it is important to keep in mind that we the blind are like any other individual , with different likes and habits...there is a tendency to believe that all the blind are the same or function the same. For example, people think that every blind person is totally blind or we all know how to read Braille!! When I did this video I wanted to share some of the techniques when going out with a blind person, however, the best thing to do is to ask the person how do they like to be helped. Offering assistance is the key, although my point is that having a meal at a restaurant with several people around and not knowing where sugar, cream, ketchup or some items could be challenging.
