As far as your tips for setting the table ('b' and 'd' for bread and drink) I'd like to add something. I was taught which utensils go on the right and left side of the table very young, and it wasn't until I got into my 20s that I learned this: the words 'left' and 'fork' both have four letters, and the words 'right', 'knife', and 'spoon' all have five letters. So your fork(s) go on the left of the plate, and the knife and spoon(s) go on the right side of the plate.

To be honest, there is nothing here that I did not already know, *but* from experience, almost everyone else (these days) is pretty clueless when it comes to basic table manners, so I agree that this is an excellent and useful video, very well presented. (I was once staying at a very up-market hotel, and, being a slow eater, had placed my knife and fork at an angle on the plate (as shown in the video.) The waiter then attempted to remove the plate, thinking that I had finished. Horrors! I thought at the time that this was more of a comment on the type of people they customarily had to serve in the restaurant, than any error on the part of the waiting-on staff.)

@BrianThrives6 жыл бұрын
To the people who are complaining that this stuff is snobbery / only for rich people: at some point, no matter our economic background, many people will be invited to formal things like weddings. It's nice to know what the customs are so you can comfortably blend in without worrying whether or not you're acting "appropriately". I mean, you could show up to your best friend's wedding in a leather jumpsuit or an S&M outfit and I'm sure they'd accept you, but... then the question becomes, are you being respectful of all the other guests and the formality of the occasion? Cultural customs are a funny thing. On one level, it's all bullshit. On another, it's like wearing a costume to a theme party. It's considerate, even though everyone knows it's not real.
@Thedistilledman16 жыл бұрын
Great point--and I could have spent more time on that in the video. But you're right: it's all "artificial"--none of these guidelines is essential to survival, but at the end of the day it's all about an agreed upon code of conduct, and being respectful of other people.

Wonderful video. I'd only like to point out that, if you need to leave the table but are not finished with the current plate/course, do NOT place your napkin on the table. Napkins should be placed in the chair and returned to the lap when resuming the meal. Placing the napkin loosely to the left of the plate indicates that you are completely finished with the dining experience.

@@herpaderpa6474 You are correct. The napkin doesn't go to the table until the signal from the host (most times) is finished and then it goes loosely folded. There is also a way to put your napkin on your lap. You fold it in half and then lay it on your lap with the open side towards you. So when you pick up the napkin to wipe your mouth you only take one layer and wipe with the inside so when you put it back on your lap you cannot see the stain and your clothes stay clean.

Congratulations, Distilled Man! Thank you so much for this excellent video which was fun to watch! I will be eternally grateful that I was taught dining etiquette/table manners from a very young age at home, which I still maintain to this day. I did, however find your video was absolutely great, easy to grasp and quite entertaining. This should be taught in schools. It is also extremely helpful to people who come from a non-western background, particularly those who are business folks, who need to learn western table manners & dining etiquette when attending business lunches or dinners in western countries. I am a traveling English teacher (I also teach Business English) so I am going to show videos like these to my students to help them better understand table manners and dining etiquette in a western context. I agree with you 100% - whilst no one is going to be offended if you don't do everything perfectly, it is always respectful to be considerate of others at the table. Also, with conversation one should stay away talking about the lat time you ate something bad and you vomited/spewed the whole night...!!! or when you had diarrhea and anything to do with dirty stuff like the toilets you had to use when traveling through places with terrible washrooms etc With the end of your meal, you can also place the fork and knife together across the plate, like a clock showing 6pm with the napkin (or as we say in British English 'serviette'). Thank you so much, for doing this video and I look forward to more of your videos.

completely, as in 101% agree (100+ some) with Nazifa :) . as someone born (and for most part, brought up) in India, the only point in this video I tried to use auto-subtitles was at 08:53 when I wanted to recheck if i assumed it right (the voice got really muffled). :( the subtitles didn't work by the way (unsure if issue is at my side). Most of it will be pretty much what should pull one through at any 'western' eating experience. loved it the moment you started with the stupid phone to be put on silent thing. Personally, I'm thankful for these tips, though :P practically I've no direct use for them being a vegetarian who almost always prefers home meals or something similar outside too and most of us have.. what you politely referred to as 'finger foods' and less intelligent, less sensitive people refer to as www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2178765/Oprah-Winfrey-draws-India-remark-people-eat-hands.html

PSA: If you ever go to Europe, and especially France, nothing is a finger food unless you are at a fast food chain. Even in a more casual restaurant or at a friend's house, nine times out of ten, if you are served a hamburger and fries or a pizza, you are expected to eat it with a fork and knife. You get a pass after joking on how you are American, but if you are trying to impress, always go for the cutlery, even for foods like wings. The only thing that is accepted as a finger food is seafood and a little rinsing bowl or towels are provided in that case. And even seafood is regulated... How to eat oysters, mussels, langoustines, has its rules too. so when in doubt use your cutlery and don't order seafood. Or wait and look at how your host is eating the dish.

Thank you Mama and Dad for making us do this for every meal we ate as a family. Which was a minimum of five nights a week even if we ate late. And we come from a podunk town in Iowa where this was definitely not common. I picked up the not switching utensils myself because I'm lazy and hand switching is a lot. And as a lefty, you're forced to learn to use both hands anyway. They loosened up a little with my youngest sister and brother, but that was because there was a huge gap in ages between the two sets of kids. They still never had to worry about my brother embarrassing himself in public. Funnily enough I do this now with my own daughter. She's two and even her high chair has properly set utensils and a napkin. Obviously we aren't overly strict with manners at two, but she does pretty good in public because we've set her up for success at home. We work on sitting still and talking quietly, but out one of us leaves the situation if she's having a bad day. We teach kids to say please and thank you and you're welcome; teach them to send thank you cards for gifts that they receive (well, I write thank you notes and we send pictures that she's colored as thanks); and a myriad of other little things in their daily lives to be decent citizens. Why not teach table manners? I guess I was set up from a young age to use appropriate manners for the situation and I want to pass that along because it does make a difference in how you're perceived in the world. I feel the need to point out that we're not even close to being well off, but manners are one of the few things in the world that are still free to use.

My family however, has been guiding me, so I have the posture and dont's down to a science, but I can't master the right cutlery for meals.

The projected viewers are supposed to be foreigners from Asia and beyond, who are wealthy enough to have a home in London, Florida, etc. They are rich folk, but Asian eating etiquette is very different. And also Americans and Europeans who upgraded their social status from middle class to upper class! Great video! 👍

In terms of when you can start eating : if you're at a really long table (I mean like 20+ people) and the person to either side of you as well as opposite you and to either side of them has been served, you're good to go. That's so that the first people who are served don't have cold food by the time the last person gets their food.

Actually a couple of things 1.please remove hats at table. Thank you. 2. Soup....as a ship goes out to sea, I tip my spoon away from me. No forward scooping or it could end up in your lap! A lot of these manners especially in Canada, come from British mess dinner protocol. (Yes I was in the military). Great way to learn the reasons for the protocols is to attend one. We had a guest night one time where you could bring a guest. My husband was most impressed because they explained everything. It is so much more enjoyable when people have manners at the table. That doesn’t mean less fun, just better dining experience
@MoonChylde06225 жыл бұрын
Indeed! Note that hat removal is generally considered to be a requirement for males and not females, as their hairstyles are often set specifically for the hat and removal would result in a dishelved appearance.

As a continental European (ie not British), I have trouble with keeping my hands on the lap. Continental table manners usually prescribe putting your hands on the table (but not up to the elbow). Otherwise it is pretty similar. I am left handed so I tend to switch hands, but I definitely keep my fork down. But that's just me. Standard etiquette is as explained in ths video.

Great fun and good instructional video; however, some of your information regarding napkins is incorrect. A dirty/used napkin never goes back on the table. It stays in your lap until the meal is over and you are leaving the table for good. If you have to step away from the table during the meal, the napkin goes in the chair. Like you said, it' about courtesy (no one wants to look at a dirty napkin). :)
@Thedistilledman17 жыл бұрын
Hey Faith, funny you should mention that. I was raised the same way (napkin on the chair). But in my research, I found that there are differing expert opinions on this. I chose to stick with the Emily Post recommendation, which specifically says to NOT put it on your chair even if you're just stepping away mid-meal. The Post book doesn't offer a reason why, but I've heard some people speculate that the reason is to avoid the potential for getting any food residue on the chair (and then possibly on your clothes). Either way, to your point, you want to avoid showing your food gunk... :-)
@marquamfurniture7 жыл бұрын
I would prefer the table option. If the napkin is greasy or contains bits of food, it would be a shame to stain an upholstered chair. Casually folded to left of plate seems more appropriate.

It is better not to put the napkin on the chair. Studies show that there are certain types of bacteria associated with different segments of the body. Mostly you will find the nasal or mouth bacteria where your hands will touch things, seeing how often one touches their nose or mouth during the day. Similarly, one finds the intestinal and urinary tract bacteria most often where one sits. So putting your napkin on your chair exposes you to the bacteria from the urinary tract or intestines. And then you put that napkin to your mouth. Now, it isn't that you will get sick from it, but it is unhygienic, and best to be avoided.

This 4:20 placing of your knive and fork after you've finished eating must be pretty new. In old British and French etiquette, it is the 6:30 position - with the knife on your right, cutting side of the knife facing the fork on your left - which is turned up. Dining etiquette is different for each culture. There are some commonalities but there are differences depending on the culture. You only know by travelling and studying the culture. A British dining etiquette is different from an American dining etiquette, both of which are different from an African (or Senegambian to be exact) dining etiquette. In the Senegambia region (and in many African cultures), people do not have their own plate but eat as a group from a large platter - thereby reinforcing social and family values. Eating from your own plate as they do in the west is considered anti social, greedy, selfish and bad manners. You wash your hands before you seat down and eat. There is even a way of seating and eating with your hands. You eat with your hands in a neat and respectful position, but slowly (you don't eat fast). You eat with your elders who show you the way. This is where you learn your dining etiquette as a young child. The young (or sometimes even a guest - especially one who does not know the family well) do not go at the centre of the dish and start cutting food for themselves. An elder or the host will usually do that for you. You do not talk when eating as they do in the west. It is considered bad manners in the Senegambia region. There is a time and a place for talking - which is before and after everyone has finished eating. This is a way of showing respect to the host who have taken the time to prepare the food for you. After you've finished eating, you compliment the host. You do not drink whilst eating - which I've seen people do in the west. That is a big no no in the Senegambia. You drink after you've finished eating. Drinking when you have haven't finished eating shows that you have not been taking your time to chew your food properly and/or not eating slowing. Dining etiquette is different for each culture. It is all about being considerate and respectful to the people you are eating with and to the host. A lot of it is just common sense. Some people over-complicate it and get too stressed up about it, whilst others try to be upitty and completely lose the plot thinking that it has something to do with being posh. It has nothing to do with being posh. I have dined with some British and French aristocrats who have the worst table manners that I have ever seen in my life, and dined with a poor African kid in the middle of an African village but with impeccable table manners that would put some of these British/French aristocrats and western city boys/bankers to shame.

I still remember when I was 12 I was so happy & excited when I was able to figure out how to cut a steak "continental style" ... I just wished someone taught me because I always felt it look a bit savage-like cutting a steak like people do w/o proper practice with the knife in their dominant hand BUT the fork being held incorrectly... And since that time, whoever I saw cutting steak the wrong way I would take the time to show them and it is satisfying each & every time I was able to pass on that know-how... Calling other people's customs & manners "ridiculous" on a video about customs & manners is both rude and provincial. Perhaps North Americans will change their cutlery habits when Germans learn to chew with their mouths closed and stop picking their noses in public.
@reinerjung16137 жыл бұрын
First, it is not acceptable in Germany to chew with an open mouth or pick noses. In case people do so, it is considered disgusting. Second, switching fork and knife is ridiculous because it makes no sense. It is complicated and looks like you do not know what to do with the tools. You cut with your right hand, because it is (usually) stronger. And usually, your motoric skills should enable you to maneuver the fork into your mouth without killing yourself. While people also do this in Europe, it is still considered bad manners, as it shows that you have not trained yourself in this art. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that you are bad person when you are not able to do it. You are also not a bad person when you pick your nose. It only show that your are not accustomed to them. Switching tools all the time is also a complicated task.
