Dinky renovation of Austin Somerset Saloon No. 40J. Deluxe version. Diecast model toy.

The Dinky company introduced the Austin Somerset Saloon model to the market in the early 1950s. It is a classic English family car that was produced as a simple model without any extras. I received my copy very worn. It shows that several generations of children have played with this model. I decided to renovate it in an improved version, adding windows and suspension to the Austin. I changed its painting to two-color. I packed everything in a copy of the original box that was produced in the early 1950s. A lovely job, and the addition of windows, seats and suspension is pleasing.The paint, though, gives it a very 21st century look, as if it was a model of a comic restomod with a huge V8 engine. I am old enough to remember these things on the road -- the bulbous styling earned them the name 'Mobile Meringue'. Metallic paint was almost unknown then, and I can remember being excited by seeing it for the first time around 1955 on an exotic American import, a Railton in metallic sapphire blue. I think that only the larger relative of the Austin A40 Somerset, the A70 Hereford, came with two-tone paint. All the Somersets I remember were in a single colour, usually beige, mid-grey or black, never metallic.

A very nice job especially the upgrades. If you don't mind me pointing it out, when the Somerset was in production, silver would not have been a common colour on UK cars. Grey would have been more likely. Having said that, it does look good.
