Removing a Ferrari Dino Alternator with a US spec air pump. Why simple repairs get involved when working on a Ferrari. #tomyangnet

That air pump is crazy! I will never complain about access to things on my 308 again. It seems like the Dino takes it to a whole other level.

It’s a little tight, but once you know what you’re up against, it’s not too bad! Thanks for watching.

What ever you do Tony, don't stop working on these things and making these episodes, so motivating, I thought my alternator was bad, but the fuel tank !!! better you than me. O-ring seals, so good and so bad, love the shield, but its all pretty tight in there. Looking forward to hearing how the AC comp performs, it's a whole different world in the warmer months. Best regards

It’s Tom!…but the A/C seems to work well enough. It may not keep up at 90, but we’ll put that to the test soon! Thanks for watching.

Apologies, I got excited and didn’t check it before posting. That’s good about the AC comp, best regards

Once again, a great video. From an engineering standpoint, this was a brilliant placement of the smog pump (due to the limited space). Still, that's some tight spacing and a massive Aluminum casting!

I guess from modern standards tucking the air pump in there was not as bad as I've seen! Thanks for watching.

"Waffle Can Bracket" is the correct term, usually followed by colorful adjectives about bloody knuckles
@tomyangnet3 ай бұрын
@@clubdinousa8700 I've been told it's possible to remove this bracket without pulling the tank, but I suspect it was a lie!

In a lot cases like this the easiest option is simply to take the engine/gearbox out of the car replace ALL belts regardless much MUCH easier to do these jobs with the engine OUT!! Maybe copper pipes rather than steel for the coolant.
@tomyangnet3 ай бұрын
The coolant pipes were not too bad to get out. I think there would be more risk of corrosion on copper pipes than the rubber hoses. The old ones fared pretty well considering their age. Thanks for watching!

Our hero saves another one! I personally know of 15+ Dinos that were taken out of service by oil soaked alternators and u r swift to get this one sorted now. I also added a hat for my heat shield too and a fast acting 60 amp circuit breaker. One tip: To prevent rattle from the hat to timing chain adjuster I slapped a piece of duct tape on the hat where it might make contact

I'm surprised this one lasted so long considering hoe much oil has dripped on it through the years!

If that were my Dino, I would convert the AC compressor to a modern Sanyo compressor and gain some Horsepower back. With regard to the alternator, I would strip out that nightmare alternator/smog air pump monster and replace it with a modern alternator from a Toyota which is smaller and puts out more amps for the Dino's electrical system..
@tomyangnet3 ай бұрын
All good upgrades, but I like to try to keep things looking largely original. More output from an alternator may overtax the wiring and may require modifying the ammeter. Thanks for watching.

I have to say, a Dino has always been a car I wanted, but it doesn't look real fun to work on. The 308 seems an absolute breeze in comparison.
@tomyangnet3 ай бұрын
I think it’s all relative. Once you know what to do, it’s not that bad. Thanks for watching

Tom with coolant hoses that run from front to back, how many litres of coolant does that Dino require?
@tomyangnet3 ай бұрын
I think it’s like 3-4 gallons of coolant! Thanks for watching!

You must be a bit of a masochist working on those beautiful , but absolutely terrible to work on Ferraris. I heard those kind of horror stories from British vehicles. But some Italian cars are obviously terrible to work on as well. Thanks for sharing that repair with us. Fourty years ago I thought that one day I would own a classic Maserati or Ferrari, but being realistic and not being a mechanic I will never buy one, even if I could afford one.

As they say, it's a living! I think there are difficult repairs on all cars, and all makes and models have their struggles. Having owned several different cars of different makes, I can think of challenges offered by each of them. It's when you know the process that makes it a little more tolerable. Thanks for watching.
