Some people make such a big deal about people like Elvis not writing his own songs but as Dino explains how he found an obscure b-side song on an Olympics 45 called "Good Lovin'" & redid it Rascals style -- the song became a classic rock hit. Sometimes it's not about writing your own songs but having the talent to interpret or reinterpret an existing tune written by a good writer/composer is just as creative as writing one of your own. Elvis was masterful at finding the right songs for himself from a vast array of writers -- some waiting for him to cover their songs because they knew he'd have a hit with them. The original "Suspicious Minds" was not a hit. The songwriter versions of "Burning Love," & "In the Ghetto" & many others were not hits until Presley added his touch & style. When I was young (and I'm from NJ like Dino) I loved hunting for obscure songs in record shops or Woolworths to redo with my little band. Absolutely exciting. I found dozens of dynamic songs. None hits. "Let the Sunshine In," Teddy Randazzo (what a great blues song), Almost Good by David Seville, an instrumental, jazz-like piano, "Every Time It Rains," by Chet Barnes. "Mountain Dew -- a New R&B Version" by Johnny Foxx. By well-known artists who didn't chart with masterpieces like "Lord of the Manor," & "Milk Train" by the late 60s Everly Brothers. "Another Tear Falls," by Gene McDaniels. And of all people a flipside song by Tiny Tim written by folk singer Biff Rose "Fill Your Heart," which years later was covered by David Bowie. "Echo Park," by Keith Barbour. "The City of Windows," & "Lost People" by Stephan Monohan. And Boots Walker's "A Bum Can't Cry." "Marlena," by David McWilliams -- who wrote many great songs but is unknown in America. Leon Russell's "Elvis & Marilyn." Michael Dinner's "Apple Annie." Lots of well-written songs that reworked -- could be excellent. I understand exactly what Dino was saying when he said he found those songs that way & respect him for it. Few do that today. They would rather just "sample." Great little conversation between Dino & Liberty. Enlightening.

Mustang Sally still rocks in every club in the USA ! There is no bar band that doesn't know that song! It's mandatory - and how you arrange is up to you!

The Olympics had some great songs. Many MANY bands covered their material. Paul Revere and the Raiders covered their Big Boy Pete and it was later reworked by the Kingsmen as the Jolly Green Giant.
