so completely different from how pianists play this concerto nowadays. This is almost transcendental, full of poetry ,a beautiful tone, bringing the work to a higher level than I could ever imagine. God....what a tragedy that this man died so young

Poetry, yes, but In truth, they are first and foremost following the printed articulations.

First, thanks for speaking so eloquently about the unique beauties of this Lipatti performance, second; but rather than mourn for what might have been, let us remember always to be grateful, as I know you are, for the miracle of his time among us...

The model for this unusually spacious performance seems to be the recording by two Liszt students, Emil von Sauer, whom Lipatti admired in print when it was no longer fashionable, and the conductor Felix Weingartner. But (ducking now to avoid brickbats) while those two sound unaffectedly grand, Lipatti to my ears is a little self-conscious and stilted. To marvel at Lipatti in a more natural vein, listen to his live Chopin E minor concerto with Ackermann, and the astonishing encores.

Both Lipatti and Ansermet were very good friends of ours in Geneva, both were exceptional musicians, thanks for posting this!

Personally I've never really warmed to this somewhat glitzy concerto. Lipatti however brings something to the score that I've never heard from anyone else, not even Richter. His sensitive phrasing and control of dynamics is something to marvel at, not to mention the amazing fleetness of touch. Thank you for this not so well known document of the revered Lipatti.

I never knew that this was a concerto that he ever played. I assume that this was from the 1940s due to the surface noise. Does anyone have any details as to the orchestra or conductor?

Yes, it was a concerto that he ever played.

And yes, the forties. Since he died in 1950....

I think this must be from a broadcast as he did not record it commercially. There is also a live Schumann concerto with Ansermet, issued on LP by Decca.

Most intelligent musicians recognise making Music is being Godlike. You talk of a time when to question the existence of the Bible God would mean excommunication.
