Dio's voice barely cracking at 2:48 is one of my favorite subtleties of classic metal, and it's the kind of imperfection that pretty much all recorded music today would do well to leave in rather than to release such perfect sanitized tracks.
@PureBlood423 жыл бұрын
I share in your appreciation of that subtle vocal 'crack' ... but just like a perfectly controlled guitar feedback, that 'imperfection' was completely intentional to add character and nuance to the effect of the song. Not calling you out or being a jerk, just clarifying that it wasn't a mistake or imperfection, whether or not yourself or readers of your post, may realize. The singer for Badlands was quite good at using that technique, as well. Peace.

@@PureBlood42 I can believe that. Good point.

@@PureBlood42 yeah Dio was a genius with that. You can tell he carefully considered how to sing every word--if the lyrics contained a word like "cry," he would plead the word out and bring a sudden sadness to the vocal performance for that one syllable. For a word like "lady," (see "Invisible") he would suddenly add an odd effeminate upward inflection. etc etc. Just a brilliant, thoughtful singer.

We're a ship without a storm The cold without the warm Light inside the darkness that it needs, yeah We're a laugh without a tear The hope without the fear We are coming home We're off to the witch We may never, never, never come home But the magic that we'll feel is worth a lifetime We're all born upon the cross We're the throw before the toss You can release yourself but the only way is down We don't come alone We are fire we are stone We're the hand that writes and quickly moves away We'll know for the first time If we're evil or divine We're the last in line We're the last in line Two eyes from the east It's the angel or the beast And the answer lies between the good and bad We search for the truth We could die upon the tooth But the thrill of just the chase is worth the pain We'll know for the first time If we're evil or divine We're the last in line We're the last in line We're off to the witch We may never, never, never come home But the magic that we'll feel is worth a lifetime We're all born upon the cross You know we're the throw before the toss You can release yourself but the only way you go is down We'll know for the first time If we're evil or divine We're the last in line We're the last in line See how we shine We're the last in We're the last in We're the last in We're the last in We're the last in We're the last in line We're a ship without a storm We're the cold inside the warm We're a laugh without a tear We're the far without the near We're the last in line We're the last in line We're the last in line See how we shine We're the last in line

Two bands that put on the greatest shows ever were Dio and Maiden. What sets Dio apart from everyone, then and now, and probably forever, is the breadth of his career. His earliest tunes were bubble gum rock that predated the fucking Beach Boys. Guys like Dio never die.

Every kid dreams of becoming a rock star. But even now in my 50's the only one I'd absolutely choose to come back as or have the same voice as, is RJD. He is so far above everyone else it's ridiculous. The perfect metal voice, which with absolute assurance I can say he will never be eclipsed by anyone else, in my life time at least. RIP Ronnie!
