Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli was born in Milan, Italy in 1806 and entered the Dominican Order at age 17. He came to America in 1828 at the request of Bishop Edward Fenwick of Cincinnati and was ordained a priest in 1830. He spent five years serving in Mackinac Island, Michigan and Green Bay, Wisconsin before settling in the tri-state area of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. He devoted the remainder of his life to building churches, teaching, and evangelizing in this region. He also founded the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. He died in 1864 and is buried in Benton, Wisconsin, in the Diocese of Madison. He was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II in 1993.
