That's a cute starter project! Nice work. And man, even if it's simple, I remember trying to figure out what a diode does back in middle school and I had to track down someone who knew, in person, to ask them to explain diodes to me. The best explanation I could get was "it's like a one way door for electricity". -- man, what a time to be alive! -- Thank you, Karen!

Good way of showing application of diodes.. just a quick note ....@4:26 it should be 6/.02 and not 6x.02

When she pulled out the goofy little pointer i had to pause because i burst out laughing! Thank you Karen for making this subject lots of fun! You have a great personality Karen and I hope you continue making educational videos with your unique style for many years to come!

Great little video Karen! You had an additional diode voltage drop for the white LED. so instead of 9V-3V=6V, it should have been 9V-3V-0.7V. Not sure how much difference it would have ultimately made. Great little project for me to do with my kid though. thank you for the inspiration! Also - stretch goal, this would make a nice project to team constant current sources, and potentially, current mirrors, where you could have one global brightness control?

Yeah, just what I saw: The printed formula was wrong (multiplication instead of division) and the diode voltage drop is missing. If you take it into account, the resistor for the white LED probably should be 270 ohms (265 ohm to be exact). Then the moon should not be as dim as it seemed in the video. Also would have been a nice explanation for the voltage drop of the diode. But still a good example for a diode project 🙂

Exactly -- so much feedback I see on YT is folks trying to look smart by correcting the author publically. that definately was not the aim of the feedback in this case. It's a lovely project. With an ESP8266, you could even use it as a "wake/sleep" indicator for little kids (e.g. is it okay to get out of bed?")

Sometimes it's OK if somethings are done wrong, that way people learning at home can try the project and figure out/solve what is wrong. I think that way of learning is very helpful where the answer isn't given to you straight away.
@neishachambers27192 жыл бұрын
Her answer is not incorrect and neither is yours. Her calculation used first approximation of an ideal diode while yours was the 3rd approximation to include bulk resistance.

At 04:23 Karen said 6v X 0.02 amps = 300 ohms The correct formula is 6v / 0.02 amps = 300 ohms

Thanks for the video. Great for beginners like me. It would be great if you go through all basic electronic components...like thermocouple.. thermistor... capacitor and so on

Bernd Strauss I’m getting there! I’m working on capacitors right now, but it’ll be a bit before it comes out.

Typo in formula. Karen (correctly) says 6 V divided by 0.02 A gives... But the displayed formula states 6 V multiplied with 0.02 A.

You are...awsome! You know your material, your personality is great, and this project was a perfect application! I read some of the comments that focus on things you might have missed. ?? You were just testing them, right?😉 Because that's when you need to do to know if your students are listening and actually learning with you. Anyone that really believes the teacher is perfect or the teacher believes it him/her self, shouldn't be teaching. 👍your the best!👍

So hiw do you know what type or rating of diod to use For any project?
@BrainSlugs836 жыл бұрын
Look at the data sheets. -- Though, most general purpose diodes are fine for something like this, low voltage, low sleep, low amperage... Pretty much anything will work. Just be aware that zener diodes and bridge rectifier diodes are probably not what you want for this. :)

But you can achieve the same functionality without any diode? Just add the white LED in reverse after the colored LEDs.
@BrainSlugs836 жыл бұрын
Not in reverse, but just in the same direction would work, if you changed the resistor value.
@ceputza6 жыл бұрын
But why use diodes and not more wires?
@ky-gp4sz6 жыл бұрын
Couldn’t you just put 1 diode on bottom wire instead of the 2 used?
@PCGamersPL6 жыл бұрын
Just Put white led after Color diodes...
@sharg06 жыл бұрын
That would cause issues with running two or three colours at the same time (not enough current through each colour).
@BrainSlugs836 жыл бұрын
@@sharg0 just change the resistor value.
@sharg06 жыл бұрын
@Michael Jensen: Wont solve the problem since you will need the same current through all LEDs to get the same brightness but the coloured ones will be connected in parallel with the single white in serial.
@BrainSlugs836 жыл бұрын
@@sharg0 that's true. With more than one switch on, the brightness would slightly vary in that setup. -- Seems like the brightness varies with the current setup anyway though. /Shrug
