Ok back in the 80's I tried this. My dad was a engineer and I wanted to impress him. I used wave guide material from a manufacturer that was square and it worked fine. The problem I had was something my dad said would happen. The farther from the antenna the weaker the RF. I could heat water at about 20cm from the antenna, not the waveguide but antenna. I used the stock microwave power supply and could only use it when he was around. lost interest and found the Z80 was fun to play with. Any ways it was cool to see you do this. Now I'm going to watch it. keep up the great work you do for us. Thanks

You can get better EMP (EMI) effects by charging up a vhf resonator (piece of low impedance co-ax cable) to around 5kv and then discharging it through a spark gap with a wire antenna attached to the resonator (VHF spark gap transmitter). Affects unshielded electronics to a distance of about 6m and can run from two 1.5v AA batteries - camera flash charger into a diode multiplier - and actually works.

This would be possible at the theoretical, with a much bigger horn, a better quality waveguide and especially coupling the magnetron to the waveguide has to be done very carefully. It´s comparable to organ´s pipes or a flute: you put that magnetron output coaxial pipe 2cm closer/further from the end of your waveguide feeding the horn, and the impedance match will be completely different (shift several 100 Ohms easily). Potentially increasing the field-strenght or decreasing it, by match of mismatch to the impedance of your horn antenna. Btw, this horn is way to small for 2.4 GHz and the ´exploding´ effects, if it was several meters long however... But by than the beam is so narrow, you literally need a lasersight to aim it. And than we´re not taking into account the actual damping along the track, which is heavily dependent on the presence (or not) of water. Which is why 13cm band never was popular among radio folks. And seen the fact a magnetron is a transit-time tube, the voltage applied must be very steady, same for the current. Increasing the voltage actually reduces output instead of increasing it. There´s a strick formula for amount Gauss of the magnet vs Voltage/Current on/trough the tube and the output frequency. This is a CAVITY magnetron, fixed tuned inside, not a real ´magnetron´ that can be tuned (like the old versions of this thing, you can make those with cheap HV vacuum diodes from old BW TVs if you want). There´s like a billion types of Cavity magnetrons, from Continous Wave types to pulse-types for RADAR. You could increase the output by adding more magnets + increasing the CURRENT trough the magnetron, but that requires a lot of finetuning. Basically every step you´re taking here is counterproductive, except the impedance matching. You´re dealing with a negative resistance device too! Regards, Thomas
@NDmitriyI Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. I also think that to increase the power, one could try installing another magnetron at a wavelength distance

War in Ukraine, March 12, 2022. Kreosan and other KZbinrs need to teach defenders in Ukraine how to really make a functional directional microwave Cannon (Directed Energy Weapon) that can damage the communications (radio, satelite, walkie talkie) and Navigational (GPS) and targeting circuits of passing russian military personnel and vehicles. 2450MHz microwave energy is optimal to damage electronic circuits and devices having a dimension of 6centimeters, or multiples. How to collimate using satelite TV dish? How to operate multiple magnetrons in combination? The own electric devices of defenders (smartphones, radios, laptops, car cpus,) should be wrapped in aluminum foil for their preservation from stray microwaves and from EMPs. The Russians pass through small villages and cities having electricity. You could teach the Ukraine villagers how to dissassemble kitchen microwave ovens to make improvized directed energy weapons to damage the Russian communication equipment and GPS units in their trucks as they park or pass by. US police use a mixture of microwaves and other radio frequencies to generate EMP and disable the ECU of getaway cars (the getaway car's wiring acts as a receiving antenna, and the car has a specialized antenna that narrows the signal into a thin but powerful band. The technology for this has existed for over 40 years, however it only started to be tested and used very recently, because it was extremely difficult to control/find the correct charging point to just IMMOBILIZE the vehicle without causing damage to the ECU, and brakes system and other vital components fail.
@Basement-Science6 жыл бұрын
Great Video! You covered pretty much everything there is to cover. The only thing I could still see is: When they exploded the audio amplifier, the microwaves may just have been the trigger for an explosion: Microwaves could be turning on transistors or diodes that are not supposed to be on at the wrong time, causing a short circuit. Additionally, with different types of discharges through the magnetron, frequencies other than the typical 2.45GHz may be produced. As for the lamps they turned on from far away, I would guess you are right that they just went closer to it for better effect.
@mfbfreak6 жыл бұрын
Isn't the magnetron frequency fully controlled by the distance between the anode cylinder and the cathode? It is a resonance cavity in which the electrons circle... Or can you influence the speed of electrons by varying the voltage?
@Basement-Science6 жыл бұрын
Actually the frequency is mainly dependent on the magnetic field strength in the magnetron as far as I know. That´s what the magnets on the magnetron are for. As he said, the voltage stays pretty much stable at 4kV no matter what you do. Of course you are right that it is built to resonate at some frequency, but you could still get some output at other frequencies.
@MrOpenGL6 жыл бұрын
@@NerdyNEET While power supplies should be protected by fuses, you will often find that in the event of a fault, such as both transistors turning on at the same time in a half-bridge PSU, the transistor will explode violently before the fuse has a chance to react... The biggest danger if the PSU explodes when you are repairing it is you having a jump scare and hitting against something. I was fixing a PSU, then a tantalum capacitor burst, I had a "oh crap" moment and I accidentally hit the bench with my hand, violently. It wasn't funny at all :D
@Basement-Science6 жыл бұрын
NEY Industries You are most likely correct that they faked it. I just wouldn´t completely rule it out yet that something could explode like in the video. I´ve never seen anything like it though, especially not something that would blow components out of the case. As MrOpenGL said, fuses are unlikely to do anything to prevent this though. Most likely their amplifier only had a single fuse on the primary side of the mains transformer, so nothing would prevent the amplifier´s bulk capacitor from discharging through some transistors.
@Mark1024MAK6 жыл бұрын
Having accidentally blown up some transistors and ICs, yes, they may well self destruct, but with nowhere enough force to make it through a decent case or enclosure. Now capacitors being abused is another matter...

Adding an antenna and a coil for the delay creates a legit EMP device. The nastiest is made of a gimmicy HDTV antenna with a small satellite dish. Single shot, but if you want repeat fire then just cut the antenna fractal pattern in copper clad board. The ground plane inductor sets the center frequency 🤓

Not saying Kreosan's video is real, but 1000W is a lot of power to lose in about a foot, the waveguide here is definitely attenuating a lot of energy (by it getting hot). What would the range of a magnetron be in a proper wave guide with a proper high-gain horn? Maybe not to light up CFL lamps, but just to be read on an RF power meter?

Also, didnt kreosan mention in the vid that the hardest thing to find was the horn

Waveguides are only one piece of the equation. In a microwave oven, waves enter the resonance chamber (the metal body of the oven) via the wave guide. The chamber is very specifically dimensioned so that the electromagnetic radiation will create several standing wave modes. These modes are partially determined by the frequency being emitted, In this case ~ 2.4ghz. Much like ripples in water, there are high points and low points in these standing waves. The waveguide is designed to match the area of the resonance chamber. Now imagine the open atmosphere is your resonance chamber. Your waveguide would have to be specifically designed to deliver high energy density within a certain area in open an atmosphere. It is very difficult to focus the energy to land in a particular area exclusively, as it will want to go every direction without having the constraints of a metal box to travel in. Radio towers function much the same way as a microwave oven.However, they aren't particularly worried about aiming the energy, they just let it spill out it every direction into the open air. As the waves further dissipate into the open air, they begin to attenuate and become weaker. The solution to this is increase the amplitude of the wave. Commercial radio towers amplify their waves to extremely high values in order to blanket an large effective area with signal carrying waves. Just like when you drive outside of the range of a radio station, it will begin to fade out. You have now left the the effective area that those waves can be transmitted through the open atmosphere (at least at the current signal amplitude). TLDR: Waveguides are selected based on area dimensions. Transmitting into a 10"x10"x10'" area would need a different wave guide construction than a 5"x5"x5" area. The larger the area of the open atmosphere, the higher the wave amplitude needs to be to still have a powerful signal throughout the entire area.

@@Ian.G256 Except for the silly imperial units, you are completely on the right track. You can't just put some random size tin can in front of that magnetron. The whole system has to be in resonance. It's not black magic, it is high frequency physics, which isn't straight forward.

Hi, at 22:04, when you create a spark in the air this way, 99% of your energy is being lost heating the air, pretty much nothing is being used by the magnetron. I think the only easy way to put high voltage (20kv to 100kv and high power) in the magnetron is to use a transformer upconverter. So somehow make a pulsed (around 0.1 second on, few seconds off) resonant circuit in the primary of a transformer that you hand wind and use 100V and around 100A, should give you a 10kW high voltage pulse in the secondary, for a few milli seconds at least. So you charge a capacitor bank in the primary, then dump this energy in a resonant 60Hz circuit, the magnetic saturation may limit the power though.

I made one of these once. It was oddly useful for dumb things. Without the metallic housing to reflect most of the radiation back and forth through the "target" its actually very weak. In situations like drying sponges it actually worked OK. It wasn't uncommon for pest control in the 70's and 80's to use microwave emission units to "radar" bugs to death to dry them out. The problem is the whole thing really isn't portable and it is literally impossible to create a "beam" from this specific hardware. You need to have parabolics and a special magnetron to produce a "beam' and even that attenuates in humidity.

Kreosan did not show the antenna a wave channel at the magnetron frequency. A special multi-element antenna with an additional reflector gives good results than this sage's cap which is missing The result is a jester's cap.

I believe with better bonding, better materials, and a properly tuned and engineered cone you would have completely different results, many other small changes like soldering connections, would greatly increase the output power. It's clear in the video, alot of the variables you added resulted in decreased raw output power. This is likely due to the connections not being about to carry the load. Looks like alot of voltage loss in the system..

great video. Is it possible that the lamps nearest the horn are consuming power preventing the ones further away from lighting?

Hi, 1) geometrical parameters of waveguide and horn must be matching with input frequency; 2) why input port orthogonal to axis of horn? I think it is a minimal requirements for successes.

As 3 magnetrons cannot be synchronized it would be impossible to sum the power, even with a well-designer coupler (already a touchy stuff!). And even if it was possible you would gain only 10dB (let's say +70% in distance). However, maybe t's possible to increase a little bit the performance of the single magnetron "gun" be designing a more complex circuit to get longer high power pulses. Indeed, using a spark gap limits the pulse duration to a very short amount of time (a few nanoseconds, so a few periods of microwave carrier) and maybe the magnetron does not have the time to reach full oscillation in this case. (Supposition)

I did it, by using two magnetrons, 180 deg, each other,, between two rays, using plastic pipe,, fill-up with fresh water, slowly circulating via standard heat radiators, for rooms,, thus,, saving more than 50% the cost of energy,, vs standard sources, for central heating system. vg55951@gmail.com for further explanations.
