Exactly. I ordered 50pcs IRFZ2807 or something, that's like 55a low voltage mosfets to pwm drive a car starter, 4 in parallel without emitter resistors. Paid 1.40 doulars for them. I got recycled ones with short legs and thermal paste and some with thermal pads on them as well. Surprisingly all tested good and they have been running at 200++ amps with 0 issue. Diode, maybe i 'm wrong, but for the last charger notice one more thing: There are two outputs, and these outputs (but maybe i 'm wrong?) are connected parallel together, so if you for example connect the QC capable phone to the USB1, and negociated voltage is 9-12V you can connect some non-QC device to the USB2 and just fry this device, because there is no separate outputs with separate chip and voltage control..... Just great design :D

The new camera works great. Very sharp picture. I would use a double schottky diode before I use any synchronous rectification. When I designed a steeper motor controller back in 2003, I used an Allegro stepper controller that had synchronous rectification builtin. The problem was, if you disconnected the motor from the driver while in operation, the Allegro chip would blow up! For the solution, I used external schottky diodes, and the problem disappeared.

The conductive wheel weight held on only by sticky tape is a nice touch. And to those saying it "fits nicely" onto the transformer...what are you seeing that I am not? I see at least 2mm between the weight and the transformer before it was taken out of the case. It's one thing to use weights to fake a premium feel, it's quite another to do so in such a careless manner.

I think if you've supplied the last one with 120v it wouldn't have melted. Its a flyback designed for a lower voltage input and around 10v output. When you raise the input and request 5 volts the flyback duty cycle becomes incredibly short, so the current goes high and the rms trough the diode even higher.

that random piece of metal (I think its actually a anti-vibration counterweight from a car wheel, the things they attach to balance the wheel when you have new tyres fitted) could also be a huge fire risk. as well as bridging primary to secondary, it could short the input terminals and draw huge current. the second charger though, with just a bit more care in the transformer assembly it could have been really good. certainly a very far cry from cheap USB supplies from just a few years ago, the ones that were all through hole, thrown together by hand in 30 seconds on paper and resin boards, all discrete w/ no ICs etc

Well the transformer is probably the only component manufacturers actually make themselves, and winding it properly is not as easy as sticking in diodes and stuff. Dear DGW thank you for the testing, but, as you know, the off-line chargers are rated for universal mains, so you should probably test at least at two AC input voltages and frequencies, perhaps 115 VAC 60Hz and 230 VAC 50Hz. Also, I am not trying to be picky, but it could be interesting to learn how the transformer copes with the power extremes, first voltage and then current. I think the metal spacer was for keeping the PCB assembly in place to keep alignment with the power push in pins during assembly. If the assembly moves around relative to the spring tangs it could create a higher resistance connection which may overheat the assembly. The controller ICs seem to be very obscure devices from China, which are only sold in China?
