I think I get what you're trying to say but those of us who lived through the assassinations of John Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy in 1963 and 1968 need no details in this song. We know who these men were (including Abraham Lincoln) and what they did for our nation. I cry every time I hear this song especially at the end when Bobby is mentioned because I vividly remember the night he was killed. I watched the news late into the night hoping for news of his condition and woke up early in the morning to learn that he had died. I truly felt despair at that moment. These three great compassionate and dedicated men who were so important to the struggle for civil rights and justice for all in America, all assassinated for their beliefs within 5 years (MLK and Bobby just 2 months apart.). It was a terrible time.

Man, I guess you had to be alive in the 60's. If you had been there you would known the feeling of their loss. I was a 8 year old Canadian kid when JFK was killed. Even at that age we new the importance of the loss. In 68 when Martin an RFK was killed we were lost. The peace movement was accomplishing nothing. When that song was released almost everyone eyes filled with tears. Today's I am 66 years old and when I hear this song it is everything I can do to not cry like a baby. The 60's was about hope and promise. The world was suppose to change, the old way just brought war. The death of John, Martin, Bobby and Abraham were the hope of change. That hope had disappeared with the death of these 4 men. Today the world is a fucking mess with little hope. Where is the next John, Martin or Robert(Bobby) to bring back hope, a big part of that hope was the music they were the story tellers. God the 60's, but I guess you had to be there to understand this song and the times.

Bobby was John Kennedy's brother who was running for president when he was assassinated. Sorry you didn't feel it. It probably doesn't hit your generation as hard as it did to those who lived through each of these assassinations( minus Lincoln). But, you are entitled to your opinion.

The substance is in the history behind each of these great men. I lived through the assassination of three of them and this song takes me back to those troubled times when we were all trying to find the good in everyone. I'm 65 and don't mind saying I shed a tear every time I hear this song. The message is very powerful and I hope you find some time to research. Much respect for your honest reaction.

Bobby's death shaped the lingering fate of the Vietnam War and the thousands of lives that were lost. There's a version of this song with audio of when Martin John and Bobby were reported shot. Maybe this young man needs more visuals and sound to feel the magnitude of this song. I just don't know what to say.

Put this song into a historical context and then you will get it. Everybody already knew who these men were, what they had done, and what they wanted to do. Had you lived back then you would have already known all of this too. A large part of the nation cried when they were killed. The song isnt about providing their biographies or an entertainment extravaganza. The song is a lament. Its a mourning for them as people who gave so much to help others, but as a result lost their own lives in their prime. Its a mourning for the loss of each one of them and the continued good they could have done had they lived. This song still brings tears to baby boomers decades later because our memories bring back the tragedy when we hear this hauntingly beautiful song.

My brother, if you don't find substance in this song, I don't know what to tell you. This came out in '69 or '70, so it has to be viewed in the context of a very turbulent decade. The loss of those three in a five year span wasn't just sad and disgusting, but it altered the course of this nation. You can add Medgar Evers and Malcolm (X) Little to the toll, '63 and '65 respectively. We mustn't let those sacrifices be in vain.

More than 1M people showed up that weekend to pass by his draped casket until taken out & taken to be buried. Was 14 when MLK & Bobby were killed.

The Only description u need to know what these men wanted and died for was 3 simple lines. “ Didn’t you love the things that they stood for?” “Didn’t they try to find some good for you and me?” “And we’ll be free someday” those lines give enough substance for those three men. It’s song that defined a generation’s pain and loss of what coudve and what should’ve been. Like you said simple. But it’s still very powerful. Especially for the people of that generation.

John F. Kennedy, Robert (Bobby) Kennedy (J.F.K.'s brother You don't even know who Bobby Kennedy was? Shot in the head while campaigning for President after his brother was assassinated. The song is simple - but so are a lot of things in the bible. If you don't know your HISTORY, you don't know how EMOTIONALLY complex this song is. It is a sketch, with these people representing every good man who ever laid down his life for others, and served us - knowing they would probably pay the ultimate price for it. Jesus Christ is just a simple story about someone who tried to make the world a better place, and was killed for it. Simple, right? Yeah - simple. Plus, listen to the bass-line. A song doesn't need to be complicated to be profound. But yes, it's a simple story - repeated down through time -always simple, always heartbreaking. Just another voice of someone who tried to uplift people with the power they were given, instead of crushing them - and who were murdered for it. You need to get right.

Wish you could come back to my neighborhood when I was 7 when MLK was assassinated and ppl were crying in the streets. Growing up in those days... Civil rights, women's rights, men on the moon, Vietnam, POW, MIA, Watergate, we needed peace friend, believe me. The song is probably more meaningful if you lived during the period when three of them were assassinated in the 1960’s. It was a very tragic time for many of us.

The song is not about "recounting" or "recapping" the whole life (or even part of the life) of these great individuals. It's about asking ourselves, where are we today as a people? And have we really progressed any further since all these men died? It's about asking, has the equality for all people in our nation arrived yet? The writer of this song seems to indicate "no".

At that time you would've understood what it meant to grief the deaths of these men. The people who stood together and believe things could change. If you lived during the time you could put things in context. There are lots of song that our simple ... without a lot of substance really? Hello Lamarius, thank you for listening to this song. I know it's been awhile since you did this reaction. I hope you have come to realize that this song is about hugely important human beings who were involved in helping black people in the USA: Lincoln freed the slaves, Bobby Kennedy saw voting as the key to racial justice and collaborated with President John F. Kennedy when he proposed the most far-reaching civil rights statute since Reconstruction, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was passed after President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. And surely you know about Martin Luther King, Jr. Please study the history of the blacks in America, then listen to this song again and cry buckets. Good luck with your study of history, it'll mean a lot to you.

Maybe you had to be there. The song was inspired by and written in the wake of Bobby Kennedy’s assassination, shortly after MLK’s. For those of us who remember that time, the song is more about our emotions in that time and the lost potential than it is about the substance of the men’s accomplishments or a commentary on the Civil Rights movement. You can like it or not like it, obviously, but I think you’re asking it to be something it was never intended to be.
