They left out the lyrics of the B - part of the song that is right before the last verse in Dion's version. They go - Didn't you love the things that they stood for? Didn't they try to find some good for you and me? And we'll be free Some day soon, it's gonna be one day

Abraham, Martin and John" is a 1968 song written by Dick Holler and first recorded by Dion. It is a tribute to the memory of four assassinated Americans, all icons of social change: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy. It was written in response to the assassination of King and that of Robert Kennedy in April and June 1968, respectively.

The loss of Bobby Kennedy May have been the most tragic and impactful of all assassinations in modern US history. He was a brilliant politician with genuine empathy and compassion. His death marked the end of the great and impactful leaders of the civil rights movement. Had he lived there likely would have been a quick exit to Vietnam, expansion of civil rights and no Nixon administration.

Yeh, all four were killed. Interesting fact: Bobby (the last person mentioned in the song) was Bobby Kennedy, who was murdered in Los Angeles on the night he won the California Democratic Primary. Two months before, when Dr. King was killed, it was Bobby who had the sad task of announcing it to a crowd of his black supporters in Indianapolis. The crowd moaned in sadness, despair, and shock when Bobby announced it. Then Bobby talked about love and pointed out that his own brother (John) had been killed by a white man. Bobby's speech was heartfelt and incredibly genuine/sad - and, as a result perhaps, Indianapolis was the only major US city that did not experience rioting as a result of Dr. King's murder. No one knew at the time that even Bobby would be killed two months later. It is so easy for Evil to blind us to the love that God has put in our lives, so easy to listen to voices that seek to divide us and make us hate one another while, at the same time, seeming to express love for us. We are too often told that our neighbors hate us when they don't, and then we hate them because we have been told they hate us.
@bluewheels39804 жыл бұрын
To me the most emotional and best version is Done by Moms Mabley on the Merv Griffin show in 1969. It's on KZbin. She was an older black comedian when it was really hard to be so. She does not play the song for laughs at all. And she might not have the best traditional singing voice but that's part of the charm. But you can tell she feels every note. Just to give you a little perspective she was born in 1894. She literally lived the song. And you can tell

Marvin Gaye had one of the smoothest voices ever. He died young after being murdered by his father. He had just released his song "Sexual Heeling" which became a huge hit. Also you should listen to "Whats Going On" which centered around the Vietnam war and the turmoil of the 60s. It is very relevant to whats going on today. Really enjoy your channel.

Song was written by Richard Holler in 1968 as a tribute to Bobby Kennedy, who just months before was assassinated. Dion DiMucci was the first to record the ballad. Other artists who covered it were Whitney Huston, Ray Charles, Andy Williams, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers and Emmylou Harris. The most affecting version was sung by Moms Mabley.
@windifitzgerald82522 жыл бұрын
This was originally recorded in 1968 the very same year of the assasinations of Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. It was a response to the shock and sadness that we were feeling as a nation. I was a child then, but this song gave words to the sadness that America was feeling. It was originally recorded by Dion Damucci and will forever live in my heart as the song that put words to my shock and sadness. It should not be put on the political table of today for positive/negative analysis.
